J. A. MORTI-LAND sUPPoRtqING BRACKET Filed OKct. 4, 1924 DQQQCO Patented Aug. 18, 1925.
UNITED STATES ,JOHN A.. MOMHLAND, 0F FQREST PARK, ILLINolS..
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that JOHNA. MoR'rHLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forest Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, has invented a new and useful Improvement in Supporting Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, more particularly, to supporting brackets for application tov the faucets of sinks to present supports for articles used about sinks, and particularly strainer receptacles for receiving kitchen waste; my primary object being to provide a novel, simple, inexpensive, and sanitary construction of supporting bracket of the general character above referred to, which may be readily positioned for use upon Vthe faucets of a Vsink and readily removed therefrom as desired.
Referring to the accompanying drawingsz* i Figure 1 is a front view of a sink equipped with my supporting bracket,
" showing a strainer receptacle and a soap dish supported thereon. Figure 2 is an enlarged, broken, plan sectional view of the upper portion of the sink structure showing my improved supporting,T bracket in plan. Figure 3 is a face view of the bracket. Figure al is a section taken at theline 4 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and Figure 5, a face view of the recessed portion of the bracket showing it clamped to a faucet illustrated in section.
My improved supporting bracket, in its preferred form, is in the form of a bar represented at 5, and formed at one end with a fork-portion 6, at which it is adapted to straddle one of the plurality of faucets represented at 7 and 8, which are located at, and extend through, the splash-board portion 9 of the sink, represented generallyv at 10. The bar 5 between its ends, at its underside contains a downwardly opening recess 11, which is so located in the bar that when the latter is applied at its fork-portion 6 to the faucet 7 and is swung thereon downwardly substantially to horizontal position, this recessed portion of the bar will straddle the other faucet 8, as shown. The disposition ofthe fork-portion 6 and the recess 11y is preferably such'that 'when the bar 5 is applied to position on the faucets as shown, it will extend in substantially horizontal position, the engagementof the g -Y i 1,550,383 PATENT SUPPORTING BRACKET;
Alpplicatien filed Octpber 4, Serial Non. 741,633.
Operaties te pr- 5 Aupon vthe faucet especially, a strainer receptacle, as for ex`` ample that represented at 14, and a dish represented at 15, these devices formed with upwardly extending hook portions 16 and 17, respectively, at which they are adapted tok be supportedy on the bar portions 12 and 13. y
The recessed portion 11 of the bar is preferably so shaped that in the applica; tion of the bar to operative position `,on the faucets, the bar will become clamped to the faucet 8 and thereby prevent accif dental upward displacement 'ofthe bar. Preferably such clamping action is effected by providing nibs 11a at the mouth of the recess 11 which are spaced apart a distance slightly less than the diameter of that part of the faucety which is tol be received within this recess, requiring that the bar at its recessed portion beV slightly vsprung to move the nibs farther apartto vpermit the faucet to pass by thein and enter the recess 11, the nibs 11? by the elasticity of the metal clamping` the faucet Vagainst the upper wall of this recess. As the size of faucets vary somewhat, it is preferred that the recess 11 be of a diameter substantially that of the largest faucet to which the bracket is to be applied, the nibs 11a being so disposed that they will clamp a faucet of the smaller diameter as stated. Where the faucet is of a larger size the nibs 11a would be filed down suficiently to permit of the proper clamping of the bar about such a faucet. Figure 5 shows the manner of clamping the bar upon ka faucet of smaller diameter as referred to.
If desired, the bar 5 may be formed of relatively thin metal, in which case it may be found desirable to provide the outer extremity of the bar portion 12 with a rearwardly extending lugportion 18 abutting the splash-board 9.
Faucets as commonly provided, present between the valved portion thereofand the splash-board 9, shoulder portions spaced soa): beingv from the splash-board, as for example as illustrated at 19 and 20, it being preferred that the fork and recessed portions of the supporting bracket 5 be so proportioned that the bar may be applied to the faucets between the shoulder portions 19 and 2O and the splash-board 9, this being of advantage, as thereby the bar 5 is held in a substantially xed position against sliding alo-ng the faucets with the manifest advantage.
lt will be understood from the foregoing that the device is not only of simple and inexpensive constructionr` but may be readily and easily applied to the faucets of a sink and readily removed therefron'n as desired, a bracket so positioned presenting the great advantage of affording a support close to the sink proper 10 for articles` as for example those shown, which it is desired to be located closely adjacent to and above, the sink proper and be easily accessible to one workn ing about the sink, without presenting` any obstruction `in the sink proper. This applies particularly tothe use of the device as a support for a strainer receptacle, as for example that shown at llt, which is so located that kitchen waste may be readily dumped into it and the liquid the-rein drain into the sink proper.
It will be noted that my improved sup porting bracket is applicable to sink structures where .the faucets are at either end of a splash-board; and where the rear lug 18 is employee and the metal of the bar permits, such lug would be bent in the opposite direction than that shown where the faucets are at the right hand end of the sink strueture and the outer end of the bracket is to project to the left instead of to the right as shown in the drawing.
lhile have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending` to limit it thereto, as the same may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.
YVhat l claim as new, and desire to se eure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A supporting` bracket comprising a bar member provided with a lug and containing a downwardly opening` recess said lug and recess l eing located at different points along` said bar and said lug` extending lengthwise of said bar, said lug being adapted to be positioned under, and in engagement with, a faucet of a pair thereof and said recess being so disposed as to register with, and receive, a portion of the other of said faucets.
2. .EL supporting bracket comprising a bar member provided at one end with a lug adapted to be positioned under, and in engagement with, a faucet of a pair thereof and containing a downwardly opening recess between its ends at which portion it is adapted to receive the other of said faucets, said recess containing clamping nibs at the mouth of said recess.
3. It supporting bracket comprising` a bar member provided with a lug extending lengthwise of said bar and adapted to be positioned under, and in engagement with, a fini-.cet of a pair thereof, a second lug` extending above said tirst referred to lug and adapted to be positioned over said faucet, said bar member having a downwardly opening recess between its ends and so disposed to register with. and receive a portion of the other of said faucets.
il. supporting bracket comprising` a bar inenibcr provided with a lug extending lengthwise of said bar and adapted to be positioned under, and in engagen'ient with. a faucet of a pair thereof, a second lug extendabove said iirst referred to lugl and .n.pted to be p sitioned over said faucet, said bar c *ing a downwardly opening recess between its ends and so disposed as to reg ster with. receive a portion of the other of said faucets, and a 'rearwardly extending portion adapted to contact with the splash-board of a sink.
