Description

Aug. 18, 1925.
G. M. REININGER SIGN Filed July 21, 1924 Patented Aug. 18, 1925 UNITE STATE GUSTAVE M. REININGER, 0F BELLEVUE, KENTUCKY.
SIGN.
Application filed July 21, 1924. Serial No. 727,150.
To all 207mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gus'ravn M. REININGER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Sign, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved sign of the type which employs a casing in which illuminating elements are enclosed for the purpose of projecting light through translucencies such as letters and other characters of white or other colored glass located in each side of the sign casing.
In certain embodiments of this general type of sign the translucent sign characters on opposite sides of the casing are illuminated by lamp bulbs placed between them, the casing being otherwise unoccupied. In other styles of this type of sign the interior of the casing is divided into two compartments by a partition placed parallel with the character bearing sides, lights being placed on each side of the partition. In another the partition is cut out at intervals, to the shape of the lamp bulbs employed so as to receive the bulbs in inset position within the partition, the light projected by each bulb thus being divided between opposite sides of the sign.
The style of sign embodiment I have disclosed herein relates to the type of sign I have just described as having a partition. However an object of the invention Ihave disclosed herein is to secure greater and more evenly distributed illumination by making it possible to employ more lamp bulbs without crowding the interior of the sign casing, and without creating any essential increase in the complications of the construction thereof.
A further object is to produce a sign structure of the type set forth, in which the interior vital features of the sign are rendered easily accessible for construction and repair purposes.
A further object is to produce a sign in which the interior elements are greatly strengthened without increase in cost of production or increase in weight.
These and other objects are attained in the sign described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a sign embodying the novel features of my invention which are diclosed tions thereof.
Fig. 2 is a portion of a partition embodying a feature of my invention.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the partition shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4: is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the section taken on the line H of the partition shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrative of the manner of forming the general type of partition I have disclosed herein.
Fig. 6 is a fragmental perspective view of the form of partition shown in Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention I employ a casing 7 which carries in its opposite sides a series of sign characters 8. These characters may be of the removable glass letter by broken away portype which is to be found in many signs. 7
Between these opposite sides of the casing the space is divided by a partition 9 placed midway of the space. This partition is preferably of sheet metal and is arranged to slide into the casing from one end through ways 10 provided therein.
The construction of this partition is the novel feature of the invention. One sheet of metal may be employed, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5, or the partition may consist of a divided sheet which has its sections joined at intervals as shown at 11 by means of bolts through flanges in the metal. The sheet from which the partition or its sections are formed, is so folded as to provide a shelf 12, the fold being made as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. In the vertical upwardly and downwardly extending portions 13 and 1 1 of the partition, I have formed punched out openings 15 and 16 for the reception of lamp bulbs 17 and their mounting sockets 18, the shelf 12 being provided for mounting the sockets as shown in Figs. 1 to inclusive, so that the bulbs are held with their axes in the plane occupied by the vertical walls of the partition. Thus one half of each bulb extends to one side of the partition and the other half to the other side of the partition. This affords equal illumination from each lamp to both sides of the partition. Be cause the illumination of each lamp is thus divided, I have chosen to provide for the additional illumination of each section of the sign by mounting lamp sockets and bulbs in inverted positions and axially opposite the vertically placed sockets and bulbs. This gives an additional half bulb illumination as may be seen in Figs. 3 4. Further advantage may be seen in the more even distribution of illumination thns afforded.
Another advantage is attained in the greater ease with Which the electric wiring may be done especially in as much as the partition may be slid into or out of position along its mounting Ways after the Wiring has been accomplished.
Having thus described my invention hat I claim is A sign construction consisting of a casing having a partition therein dividing the space between opposite character bearing faces thereof into con'ipartments, said partition consisting of a series of sections corresponding in number to the number of characters or groups of characters in the sign to be formed, each of said sections consisting of a sheet of metal so folded in zig-zag formation as to produce a shelf of double thickness having one-half the partition located above and one-half below the shelf, each half in single thickness and located centrally of the shelf, each of said partition halves having lamp shaped openings therein extending from the shelf, and lamps mounted on opposite sites of the shelf and occupying the openings.
In Witness whereof, I affix my signatnie.
