, To ail echom it my concern:
SCHMIDT, a citizen of the hogs and State of Ohio,
a full, clear, concise,-
reference bein Be it known that I,- FRnnnRIoK'H. OB I United States, residing at Cleveland, in .the county of Guyahave invented new and useful Improvements in Controllers for Electric Motors; of fwhichthe following is drawing, forming. a part of this specificat-IOII; 1 v p This invention relates to improvements in controllers for electric motors.
In practice there are numerous instances where electric motors are em loyed to drive machinery, such as tire mac ing frequent reversals and quick, stopping at will or incidentalto reversals and the so controlled.
present invention has amongits objects to provide asimple, controller whereb Other obi'ects and advantages of the inventionwil hereinafter appear.
The accomggrliying drawing illustratesza preferred eni l'lnent of the invention and the same will now be described it being 'understood that the embodiment illustrated is- .susceptible of various modifications fallingv offthe controller alone. t J 4 Referring to Fig. 1 the'same illustratesa controller for a said controller vinc [switches land 2 to ofxthe motor circuit, I if'said motor underlthe control of push and'4. .The switches '1" provided with operat= 4 ing windings '1 an 2fi and withv auxiliary within the scope of the appended claims. I
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view'of'thecontroller and its controlled motor; and
v Fig. 2. is a simplified diagrammatic-view uir-rel cage 'motor- M, uding electromagnetic control the continuity and toiefiect reversals button. switches 3 and 2 are respectivelcontacts'l and 2" res ctively' to complete maintaining circuits for said windings.
' The push button switches 3 and 4 are respectively provided with two sets of stationary contacts to be bridged alternatively.
The switches 3 and 4 when depressed respectively provide for energization of switches 1 and 2 through the down contacts ofthe former switches. 0n the other hand the up f contacts of switches 3 and 4 areincluded qthef maintaining circuits of switches and and exact descript on; had to the accompanying arm'sinayjbe oscillated by sai convenient and reliable. such machinery may be and function to il 1 eferrln contacts of switch .3 .,by
. through the upper; contacts apparent from the sim- 1 maintaining circuits of switches 1 and 2 respectively. I
Switches '5 and 6 tionally engaged therewith b clam s 8 or other preferred means whereb each hf said shaft for engagement'with stationary contacts 9 and 10 selectively; said contacts. servingassto s for said arms to arrest the same independently of saidshaft. The
shaftoperatively connected to the motor or to a reversing part of the driven machine of switches 5 and 6 will be engaged-with their stationary contacts whereby the arms alternate K A t I upon successive reversals of the motor'an driven machine.
The reversing switches 1" and 2 are em-.
plo ed to plu the motor M for etc in an the switc es 5 and 6 are provided maintain suchswitches energized when so employed until the motor isbrought torest. As a'forestated the switches 5 and 6 are in circ'uit with the windings of'switches 1 an 2 frespectivel y and; as will be under both switches Hand 6 are closedthroughout operation of the motor in either direction maintain the switch ener 'zed until the motor is brought to a standstill-and then tends to rotate v v comprise contact arm's osclllatably mounted on ashaft 7 but fric-' plugging I shaft 7 may comprise an; extenslon. of the motor shaft or-a separate' inaf,
reverse direction whereupon the switches ,5
and 6 are inunediate'lyshifted to de-energiz'e the. fileuggmg switch [1 or 2 as the case now tofFig. 2 which shows in sim lified orm'the same circuit connections as 15;. 1 depression of. push-button switch 3 completes 'the circuit of; winding 1 of switch 1, said circuit extending from line L condu if 11 through'u per contacts of switch 4 conductor 12 t rough lower to line L.
14v through winding I 1 On the other liami depression of switch 4 completes v of switch 2 said the circuit 10f winding 2?, ciruitextending from linievL' by conductor I of switch 3 by conductor ,16 through thelower. contacts of conductors 13 and switch 4 by conductors 17 and 18 through suming energization of switch '1 for plugging following energization and de-energization of switch 2 it will be observed that switchl will be m'aintained'energized until the torque of the motor is reversed wherer. upon the arm of switch 5 will be shifted to,
momentarily interrupt circuit for de-energization of switch 1. Thereupon assuming switch 2 to be open the motor is rendered idle. On the other hand assuming retention of switch 3 until after reclosure of switch 5 the switch 1 willbe maintained energized 25.
for continued reverse operation of the motor. More specificall the switch 1 will be maintained ener ize until push button switch 4 is depressed to interrupt the circuit includin% contacts 1 and switch 5.
r uch depression of switch 4 to de-energlze switch 1 also energizes switch 2 as aforedescribed and if switch 4 is then released switch 2v will bring the motor to rest after which it will be de-energized by switch 6 in the same manner that switch 1 is de-energized by switch 5. If on the other hand switch 4 is held" depressed until switch 6 is reclosed the motor will continue to operate in a reversedirection pending depression of switch 3 eithervto stop the motor or again reverse the latter. The maintaining circuit of switch'2 as willlbe apparent extends through the upper contacts of switch 3, contacts 2 and switch 6 in series whereby the control I of winding 2 is in all respects similar to the control of winding 1". v
Manifestly if it .be desired to stop the motor when operating in either direction without plugging said motor this may be accomplished by depressing the proper push button switch to its intermediate position out of contact with all stationary contacts. The depressed switch then merely de-energizes the reversing switch last closed thus permittin the motor to drift until it comes to rest. & will thus be apparent that the ve sim ple apparatus described afiords very exible and convenient control startin reversin and stopping requirin use of on y two pus button switches. oreover inasmuch as plugging efi'ects quick stopping of the motor thepush button switches only require retention in their depressed positions for very brief periods to effect reversals of the motor. The power circuits for the motor are shown in heavy lines, Fig. 1, and being well known and obvious will not be described herein. As will be apparent other types of motors may besubstitued for that illustrated and the power connections maybe varied as desired. Also as will be'apparent provision maybe made foraflording speed control of the motor if desired.
What I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is:
