Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,967, dated-September 15, 1874 applicatian filed y August 25, 1874.
d To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, ORRIN B. THOMPSON, of White Ash, and WM. W. GRIER, of Hulten, county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriages, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a carriage, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, We'will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our carriage. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the seat removed. Fig. 3 is a front view of the carriage. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a flanged nut used in the carriage. Fig. 5 is a section through the line w w, Fig. 3.
A represents the front axle, with wheels B B 5 and A is the rear axle, with its wheels B' B. C C represent the two parts of the fifthwheel, the upper part, C', being secured to the spring-bar E. The spring-bar E and rear axle A are connected. on each side of the vehicle by springs D D, which are provided with a center-piece, Gr, and end links H H, said springs, center-piece, and links being constructed in the same manner as described `in the Letters Patent No. 152,020, granted to 0. B. Thompson J ine 16, 1874. The links H H are fastened to their respective places by means of clips a a, passing through the links below the pivots of the lower springs, and grasping the lower parts of the links. The lower part of the links straddles the axle, (or spring-bar,) and the clip is fastened underneath by the usual plate or cross-bar and nuts. To one of the leaves of the lower spring D, on each side, is attached the wear-iron b or the leaf may be formed with the wear-iron in one piece, only so that said iron forms a part of one of the leaves of the spring. Between the upper ends of the links H H, and running parallel with the spring-bar and back axle, are cross-bars I I, to unite the springs on the sides 0f the vehicle at both ends, and thus make it firm and strong. These cross-bars are fastened to the pivots connecting the upper springs to the links by means of nuts d, which are provided with anges or win gs e, as shown in Fig. 4, the nuts being screwed upon the inner ends of said pivots and the cross-bars then bolted to the under sides of the llanges or wings. 0n the under side of the spring-bar E, between it and the upper part, C', of the fifth-wheel, is secured a T-iron, f, having projections, one or more, extending in front or in rear, or both, of the spring-bar to receive one or more braces from the cross-bar I, and from the upper side of the spring-bar. h is a brace from the crossbar I to one of the projections on the T-iron, and@- is a brace from the upper side of the spring-bar to said iron. In place of the brace h the same object may be attained by passing braces directly from the upper ends of the links H to either the projections on the T-iron f or to the upper part, C', of the fth-wheel. This relieves the spring-bar from all undue strain, which would otherwise come upon it. m m are braces passing from the upper part, C', of the fifth-wheel diagonally upward, outward, and forward to the top of the spring-bar E. The lower springs D D are connected near their center, by two cross-bars, J J, attached thereto by clips or other suitable means, and these cross-bars support the slatted frame forming the bottom of the carriage. This frame is constructed of a piece, K, bent to form the sides and rear end of the frame, and the front ends of said piece connected by a cross-bar, K', to which the dash-board L is attached. The slats n n are then securedvto the cross-bar K' and rear part of the piece- K, and pass under the cross-bars J J. P is the seat, which is secured, by clips or other suitable means, to the top springs D above the center pieces G.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The wear-irons b, combined with or form ing part of the springs D, as set forth.
2. The T-iron f, attached to the under side of the spring-bar E, combined therewith, and provided with one or more projections on either or both sides, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the spring-bar E, T-
iron f, cross-bar I, and one or more braces, hy as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination of the spring-bar E, T- iron f, and one or more braces, i, for the purposes set forth.
5. The combination ofthe spring-bar E, fifth- Wheel C', and diagonal braces m m, substantially as set forth. 4
6. The cross-bars I I, passing between and connecting the upper ends of the links H H, all combined as shown and described. v
7. The nuts d, provided with flanges e, in combination with the cross-bars I and links H, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
I8. The: peceKfbent to form the rear end and sides of the slatted frame of a carriage, all'combined as set forth.
9. The combination of the springs D D, braces G, cross-bars J J, and the slatted frame K K n, substantially as set forth.
