To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS J. Fnmmn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owatonna, in the county of Steele and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ventilators, and the object is to provide a device especially adapted for use in the stock room of a barn, and so constructed that air is allowed to flow in one direction-that is fresh airmay enter but the warmer air within due to the bodily heat of the animals will not escape.
A further object is to produce a device of this type adapted for general use, where it is desired to permit the flow of air in one direction only.
A still further object is to provide valve elements movable in opposite directions with reference to their axes of rotation but permitted to open in one direction only, these elements being mounted in a casing suitable for the purpose.
A still further object is to provide a casing adapted to extend through the wall of a building, with inlet and outlet openings on opposite sides of the wall, and in reverse relation, or in corresponding relation, as the case may be, and a double wing valve mounted within the casing, the elements of the valve being independently movable and each being permitted to swing to open position in one direction only.
A still further object is to provide in connection with the foregoing, a supplementary air controlling device in the form of a door or damper.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel con struction and arrangement of elements, described and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made in construc tion within the scope of the claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

ing passing through the side wall of a build ing designated 10, beneath the ceiling 11, includes side walls 13 and 1 1, end walls 15 and 16, and upper and lower walls 18 and 19.
An opening in the lower side, near one end, may be covered by a screen 20 and an opening 21 in the top and toward the opposite end of the casing serves to permit of the continuous flow of air controlled only by the alvcs and damper. The end walls of the casing may be inclined as shown, and insulation may be provided as illustrated at and 23. Since the casing is located just below the ceiling, the wall 16 on the inner side of the building may, without insulation, become sufficiently warm under certain conditions, to check the inflow of cooler fresh air.
In this form of the device the damper 24 is mounted or may be mounted within the opening 21, and is subject to manual control.
The automatic valve consists of two elements or plates 26 and 27, and these elements may be mounted independently on the stems 28 and 29, if desired. The stems are shown in parallel relation and are preferably located in about the positions shown with reference to the side walls, and especially with reference to the inlet and outlet of the casing. The vertical elements 30 and 31 act as stops, and limit the movement of the valve elements so that they may swing to open position in one direction only, permitting of the passage of air in one direction, to the exclusion of the other,since a current of air in the opposite direct-ion would have a tendency to separate the valve elements and swing them outwardly with reference to each other, to closed position. In the second form of the device, the up per wall of the casing is designated 30', and may be continuous, the end walls being shown at 36 and 87, openings being provided through the bottom wall 38, at the ends of the casing, one of these openings being closed or partly closed by a screen 39. The valve elements are mounted in the same manner as before and are correspondingly numbered.
Instead of damper 24:, I provide in this form of the device, a door 40 hingedly mounted at 41, and cooperating with the automatic valve in the body of the casing, for controlling the current of air passing into the building. The downwardly extending portion 4-2 of the casing passes through the loft floor, the latter being designated 43.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed is:
A device of the class described, comprising a pair of pivoted valve elements the position of Which is determined exclusively by air pressure, said elements being in open position under pressure of inflowing air, and maintaining that position until the air current is reversed, and an independent swinging valve element for regulating and cutting oil the air admitted by the valve elements first named, said independent element being mounted on a central axis perpendicular to the axes about Which the valves first named are movable, the independent valve element when fully open being perpendicular to the surfaces of the valve elements first mentioned.
