Be it known that I, LoNNIn T. PENNY, a resident Vof Raleigh, inthe county of 1Wake and State of North Carolina, a citizen of the United States, have invented. certain new and` usefulV Improvements in Car-Door Locks, of which thefollowing is a specification. l y
My invention relates to improvements in car 'door locks, and refers particularly to a lock for use on the sliding doors of freight cars, although the lock may be used for any purposeforj in any situation where it will operate in a practical and useful manner.
One objectof my invention is the provision of a locky which can be easily placed upon cars in common use, or upon new cars at the ytime of manufacture and at a price very much lower or cheaper than the locks in general use, while overcoming the objections yand defects in the locks in common use.

Secured to the car and near the edge of its opening is the vertical plate 14, rigidly re-I tained by fastenings 15 and having at its lower portion the angle arm 16, provided with an outstanding ear 17, adapted as will presently appear to form a fulcruni for the hasp or locking lever, while extending from said plate is the flange 181 provided with the hasp guiding portion 19, and the recess 19', to form the keeper for the hasp, while pivoted to said flange at its upper end 20, is the arm 21, formed with the hasp engaging notch 22, and having near its lower portion an opening 23 in register with an opening 24 on the flange 18, to receive a seal or lock, not shown, and said pivoted locking arm is further provided with a stop 25, to limitl the movement of said arm inwardly with reference to the flange 18.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings the extreme simplicity and the operation of my lock will be readily understood, and it will be noted that when the door is slid to closed position the locking lever will automatically move the locking arm out of its path and assume the position shown in Figures 3 and 4L and that the locking arm will swing into locked position and that when desired to open the door for a limited distance the locking lever will bear against the lug on the plate after the manner of a fulcrum forcing the doon for a short distance, when the locking lever will engage the locking bar and the parts.

The advantages of my lock will be readily understood by all persons skilled in such matters and it will at once be apparent that cars can be equipped with my lock at no greater cost than the detective locks in common use and will provide a lock which, will prove useful, efficient, and thoroughly practical.
It will be noted that the iirst of the series of keepers 12 is formed with a slight offset or rounding portion which enables it to slide more readily into locking engagement and it will also be noticed that the lever 7 can be used to open the door by its engagement with the ear 17, this ear forming a ulcrum and permitting easy opening of the door by the single attendant.
All things considered the car door lock being capable of production at a much less price than the locks in common use; being easily applied to old or new cars; being entirely automatic in operation and providing a reliable lock; and also acting as a booster to open the door insures the improvement illing a long felt want in a perfect mannel'.
I claim:
1. In a lock for sliding doors, the combination with the car and door, an anchoring plate secured to the door, a plate rigidly secured to the car in proper relation to said anchoring plate, a locking lever pivoted to the anchoring plate, locking means carried by the plate secured to the door for securing the locking lever in locked position consisting of a keeper carried by said plate, a pivoted arm carried by the plate and coacting with said keeper, and means for sealing and securing said locking means and lever.
2. In a lock for sliding doors, the combination with the car and door, a plate secured to said door, a pivoted locking lever having a series of keepers, a plate secured to the car and having a recess to receive said keepers, a pivoted arm carried by said plate and adapted to engage said locking lever to retain it in secured position, and adapted to receive a. permanent lock for securing the arm and locking lever said lock passing through the plate and pivoted locking arm. 3. A lock for sliding doors, consisting of an anchoring plate, a locking lever pivoted to said plate, a plate formed with a locking recess to receive said locking lever, a fulcrum formed on said plate and consisting of an inward extending arm having an ear to be engaged by said locking level', and an arm for retaining said locking lever in locked position.
4L. In a car door lock the combination with the car and door, a pivoted locking lever secured to the door, a plate secured to the car, a keeper on said plate to be engaged by the locking lever, a pivoted arm on said plate to coact with said keeper to retain the locking lever, the keeper and arm having openings to receive a lock, and a raised portion on said plate to form a ulcrum for the locking lever to force the car door open.
