A. E. HOEFT EDUCATIONAL GAME` Filed Aug. 5, 1924k 11.1.5 15A Us: 1..5 mst.. .5L
mlm) mi LUGIST E, HOEFT, OE
BROOKLYN, NEW] YORK.
Application filed August 5, 13.24y Serial No. Wazaa,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it know-vn that l, Anouar E. Honra, a ci iZon of the United States, and residing` at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of llew York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Educational Games, ot' which the following is a specilication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
This invention relates to gaines d particularly to devices of this class designed to amuse both young` and old; and the object ot the invention .is to provide a gaine which in addition to being amusing and interesting will also be instructive or educational along mathematical lines, especially in addition, sub traction and multiplication g a still further object being to provide a game board oi the class specilied with the arrangement of the alphabet there-on in print, letter and script `form whereby the gaine may be instructive to this end; a still 'further object being` to provide the representation oit a clock on the game board, whereby a child may be educated to read the time on a clock or watch dial; a still further object being` to provide in combination with the gameboard, rotatable dials used in connection with characterized sections of the gameboard in the playing of the game whereby the element of chance. enters into the game to render the saine attractive and tascinatimg` as well as educational; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specilied which is simple in construction, eincient in use and which is constructed as hereinatter described and claimed.
rlhe invention is `itully disclosed in the iollowing specilication, or' which the accompanying drawing,` forms a part, in which the separate parts oi my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. l is a plan view ot' a game made according` to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l and showing a modihcation of the construction shown in Fig. l; and,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a part used in connection with the game as shown in l.
rlhe game as shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawing` comprises a gameboard 5, and a member 6 independent of the board and characterized to represent teacher, and
used in connection with the board in the manner hereinafter set out.
The board 5 consists ot a suitable trame 7 in which is mounted a printed, lithographed or otherwise characterized card retained in position by a backing` member secured to the frame l as shown in Fig. ot the drawing. The. card 8 is provided with two semi-circular sections l0 and il, each or which are divided by radial lines into ten radial columns designated at thtop thereoie by the numerals lto l0 inclusive reading; from lett to right, and said columns are divided into circumferential lines, ten in number, ach olf' said lines reading trom the anis of the section 10, l to 10 inclusive, 2 to 2O inclusive, etc. while in the section ll said lines read 1l to 1GO, l2 to 120, etc. whereby, addition, subtractions and multiplicationsup to two-hundred can be calculated.
llivoted to the card 8 and the backing` 9 at theaxis of the section l0 is a movable indicator l2 having numerals l to 10 inclusive placed thereon reading` upwardly from the pivot thereof, and adapted to register with the lines designated by the radially arranged numerals in the separate columns as clearly shown in the drawing,l and a similar indicator'lzl is pivoted to the card 8 and backing 9 centrally of the anis of the section ll and has the numerals 11 to 20 arranged radially thereon and reading jr'rom the axis of the member 18 outwardly.
A dish l/l is rotatably mounted on the card 8 and backing' 9 centrally between and above the sections 10 and ll, and on which are arranged in staggered relation the numerals l to 10 inclusive, and al pinion or indicator l5 is secured to the card and backingand adapted to register with the disk let or the numerals thereon in playing the game.
lt is also preferred that the upper lett and right hand corners of the gameboard or the card 8 thereof be provided with sections i6 and 17 in which appropriate verse or other written matter may be placed, while centrally of the board and between the sections l0 and l1 is represented a clock dial 18 with the hands 19 whereby predetermined hour may be represented thereon for the instruction ot children, and the lower edge portion ot the card 8 is also preferably provided with two rows ot the alphabet a to z, one in printed block letter torni and the other in script form whereby a child may be ael Uil Cil quainted with and have lknowledge of the letter toi-mation, thus rendering the entire game educational to the greatest possible degree.
The member 6 shown in Fig. 3 ot the drawing is made trom an elongated body ot suitable material which may be characterized in any desired manner, preferably to represent; a teacher, and at one end ot said member is rotatably mounted a dial 2O having a plurality ot radially arranged sections, a predetermined number ot which are numbered l to 2O inclusive, the numbers being arranged in staggered relation, and arranged thereon are two sections 2l colored blue, and two sections 22 colored red, or any contrasting colors may be employed. rn indicator 23 is secured to the member' and milapted to register With. the numeralcd and colored sections of the dial 20.
lilith the construction shown in F ig. 2, instead ot mounting the dial 20 on an independent member 6 which may e held in the hand, the dial 2O is pivoted directly to the card S and backing 9 as indicated at 24e, and the indicator 23 is also mounted in connection With the card 8 and backing 9 and registers with tie dial 20.
In other words, the location oit the dial Q0 will be optional, but as shown in Fig. 2 ot the drawing, it vill be understood that the clock dial representation and the hands 19 thereot will be eliminated, and the dial 2O substituted therefor.
ln playing the game, the dial 20 is iirst rotated by one of the players, any number ot players being able to play the game, and assuming that the first player in rotating the dial 2O found that said dial stopped with the indicator 23 registering with the numeral l-lz thereon see Fig. This numeral will designate that the indicator member 13 cooperating with the section ll is manipulated :tor the reason that the numeral lll appears on the member i8; the player next rotates the dial or disk lil and assuming that the dial stops with the indicator registering with the numeral 10 on said dial see Fig. l, the indicator men'iber 13 will be moved to the lett of the column l() in the section il and by tracing downwardly on the member 'i3 to the numeral let, which was previously represented on the dial 20, to the right of this numeral will be 'found in the column headed by the numeral l0 in said section, the numerals 140. The player thus has tor his first score lett). Let us assume that the second player in rotating the dial 20, said dial stops with the indicator ieg'istering with the numeral 5. This player Will then operate an indicator member l2 in that the numeral 5 appears thereon and to determine the column in the section it), the dial or disk lit is rotated and it the dial stops with the indicator l5 registering with the numeral 2, the
natascia,
indicator member 12 is moved into position at the lett ot the column designated by the numeral 2 in the section l0 and adjacentI the numeral on the indicator' 12, butto the right thereof will be found the numeral l0; thus the second players first score Will be l0. lt will be understood that all of the players playing the game will have one turn in operating both dials lil; and l2 and this operation will be repeated until one ot the players has reached a predetermined score such vtor ei;- ample as one-tl'iousand, in which event said player Wins the game. However, in the playing` ot the game and especially in the manipulation ol? the dial 20, itt a player in rotating said dial should have the misfortune that the dial would stop with the indicator registering with either ot the blue sections 21, twenty-Fire points or a y other point value desired will be subtracted trom the total score attained at such time, or il such player has not registered a score, his first score will be a minus. ln like manner, it one ot the red sections stops adjacent the indicator 23, a greater reduction as tor example titty points is subtiacted :troni the total score or is calculated against any score which may accrue in the playing oit the game.
ln View ot the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the game Will be rery fascinating and attractive and will amuse both young und old, and in the process ot playing the game, the players are constantly educated in mathematics or in other n'ords given the proper solutions to given problems or problems produced in the actual play ot' the game.
lt will be also understood that while I hare shouf'n and described a specitic arrangement ot numerals on the gamcboard as well as a specitic rrangement ol other data thereon and have described one method ot playing the gaine, that l. am not necessarily limited to the structural details herein shown and described, nor to the specific manner ol playing the game herein set out and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and dcscrilnfd may be made within the scope ot the appended claims without depar ing i'rom the spirit oi my rinvention or sacrificing its adrantages.
From the Atoregoing description ot the operation ot playing the gaine, it will be understood that u'hen the nun'ierals l to itl inclusive are indicated by the in i 2:5 on the dial 20. the indicator member l? manipulated, Y er the dial or diei; li has been rotated, while when the members lt to 2O inclusive on the dial Q0 register with the member 29, the indicator member i3 is operated; in this Way, the manipulation ot the dial Q0 becomes rery 'tascinating and eirciting in determining Which ot' the sections tijd lO-li, the mathematical problem is to be solved, it being understood that the section ll has higher valuation than the section 10, although it is possible to secure a higher score in the section l0 than in the section 1l, especially it the nmnerals in the dial or disk lll should be less than 5.
