Be it known that I, JOHN lVALm-IEIM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the conuty of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sound-deadening casings or hoodsv for typewriting machines, the casing comprising a body part and a cover, provision being made for the .linespace handle, .the carriage-return handle and the carriage-release handle to project through a slot in the casing to the exterior thereof, and for the keyboard section of the machine to project through an opening in the lower part of the casing, so that the machine may be operated without raising the cover. The invention is in the nature of improvements which may befused with the parts shown in my prior application, No. 423,818, filed November 13, 1920 (now Patent No. 1,499,709, dated July 1, 1924), and the application of B. C. Stickney, No. 429,617, tiled December 10, 1920 (now Patent No. 1,519,224, dated December 16, 1924).
Au object of the present invention is the provision of means to prevent the handles, projecting out of the casing, from becoming accidentally in contact with things to the exterior of said casing. To this end, the casing is provided with an overhanging forward edge or eaves, the floor of which has a slot therein, through which the handles project toward the keyboard of the machine, so as to be protected under the eaves and to be in close reach of the hands of the typist at the keyboard. The floor of the eaves is formed by slot-closing cushions disposed horizontally relatively to each other, one of the cushions being supported on the cover to swing upwardly therewith, while the other cushion is supported on the body The line-space lever operates forwardly to compress the forward slot-closing cushion, which, however, is reinforced to provide the necessary resiliency to restore it .to normal position.
A feature of the invention is' the provision of a base or pad to support the casing and the typewriting machine within the casing, the pad being reinforced with a casing to the pad. For this purpose, the base or pad may be comprised of layers of sound-deadening material, such as felt, s ecured to each other, and between which the reinforcing frame is disposed, the reinforcing frame comprising a main bar over which are disposed two cross-bars, the latter to be positioned under the feet ofthe machine when the casing is secured to the pad with the machine4 therein. Devices are also provided for securing the casing to the reinforcing frame of the pad. The casing is provided with internal abutments to fix the typewriting machine in position re1a.

lVhen the casing is applied, there remains an opening at the front of the machine under the key-levers and from the key-lever guide-comb or plate to the supporting base or pad. It is another feature of this invention to provide a suitable plate which may readily be applied to the machine to close the opening from the bottom of the comb-plate to the base.
There remain openings due to the slots in the key-lever comb-plate, through which. sounds may escape. It is a further feature of this invention to provide cushions between adjacent key-levers to keep closed the slots in the comb-plate` each key-lever when depressed spreading the adjacent cushions as it is operated. v
The body part of the casing has a large front opening to enable the machine to be placed therein, the openingi beijing closed by a removable plate. It is another feature of the invention to provide novel and efiicient means for fastening the front plate upon the casing after the machine is inserted.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

IS)aid carriage is mounted for letter-feeding movement upon a frontl rail 20 and a .rear rail 21 fixed to the main frame, saidcarriage being provided with the usual line-space handle 22, carriage-return lever 23 and carriage-release lever 24, all o f said levers comprising forwardly-extending portions and downwardly-extending portions (for a purpose to be described hereinafter). The platen may be rotated by knobs or fingerwheels 30 fixed to the ends of a shaft-31 upon which the platen is mounted, or by the usual line-space mechanism, of which only the line-space -handle 22 and slide 32 are shown. The carriage is provided with the usual pointer 33 operating over a scale 34 on the main frame, with which scale also col-operates the usual margin-stop To deaden the noise arising in the operation of typing, there is provided a sou'nddeadeniiig casing or hood, which comprises a body part 40 vand a cover part 41 hingedly connected at 42 to the rear of said body part. The body part 40 comprises a rear wall 45, side walls 46 provided with later-al extensions 47, and a front wall composed of two laterally-spaced end sections 48, the space between said end sections being suiiicieiitly large to permit the insertion of Ia typewriting machine therethrough and into said easing, the typewriter carriage operating over said extensions 47 to the right and left. When the machine has been inserted in the casing, it is found that there are openings between the sides of the machine and the sections 48 of the easing, above the banks of keys adjacent the basket which houses the type-bars, below a guide or combplate 49 down to the supporting base 10', and in the comb-plate due to the slots 50 in which the key-levers operate.
For closing the front openings at the sides o-f the machine and adjacent the basket which houses the type-bars, the casing is provided with a front plate 52, which is mounted upon the end sections 48 by fingerpieces 53, said front plate being provided with hooks 54 which pass through slots 55 in the end sections 48 behind\saidsections, said front plate 52 lying adjacent the frame of the typewriter to close the openings at the sides thereof, and having a downwardlyextending arcuate portion 59 for closing the opening adjacent the type-holding basket. The front plate 52is provided with cut-out ortions to permit ready access to the lineock release-key 57 and the ribbon-color shift-key 58.
For closing the opening between the bottom of the comb-plate 49 and the supporting base 10, there is provided a plate, indicated generally by the numeral 62 (see Figures 6 and 7), said plate being .provided with a horizontal portion 61, having flanges 63- for resting upon the upper surfaces of supporting feet 11 between said feet and the typewriter frame, so that screws 64 which are secured to said feet may pass through said flanges 63 to fasten said plate to the machine. The plate 62 is provided with a vertical portion 65, which extends upwardly from horizontal portion 61, and a downwardly-extending portion 70', which closes the opening between the bottom of the typewriter frame and the supporting base 10. The plate 62 is provided with variousopenings 72 which permit vario-us key-levers, which are located below the comb-plate, such as the back-space key-lever ,(not shown) and the supporting arms or levers 73 of the space-bar 74, to operate therein. By an inspection of Figure 7, it will be seen that the vertical portion of the plate 62 is slightly in front of the lower edge of the key-lever comb-plate 49, thus leaving an opening between said vertical portion and said combplate. To close this opening, there is provided a plate 66 which rests upon ears 67 of the vertical portion 65, and which may be secured to the plate 62 by screws 68 threaded into the ears 67, the plate 66 being attached after the plate 62 has been assembled on the machine. The plate 66 extends rearwardly and is provided lat its rear end with an upwardly-turned flange to abut against the front face of the key-lever combplate 49.
For closing the openings in the combplate, due to the vertical slots 5() in which the key-levers operate, there are provided cushions 75 of substantially the height of t-lie comb-plate, said cushions comprising folds which lie between adjacent key-levers and are composed of sound-deadening material, such as plush, felt, or soft leather, which has suicient resiliency to permit the folds to spread, so that adjacent cushions form a complete closure about the enclosed keylever. The cushions are held in place by means of upper and lower rods 76 ypassing 'through the two-ply margins of the cushions, said rods being held in place in flanges or brackets 77 fixed to the comb-plate. When a key-lever 14 is depressed, as shown in Figure 4, the cushions permit an easy downward movement of said key-lever, but always closing the portion of the slot irnmediately below and immediately above said key-lever.
The means described above, namely, lthe front-plate 52, the plate 62, and the cushions 7 5, completely close-the openings left in the body part of the casing after the t said top wall having positioned therein a transparent plate 82 for permitting the interior of the casing to be viewed and terminating in a short front wall 83 positioned forwardly from the 'front plate 52 ofthe body part to form an overhang or eaves 84.- There is thus formed an opening, under the overhang, between front wall 83. and front plate 52. The variouscarriage-operating levers 22, 23 and 24, as previously described, extendforwardly and then downwardly to pass through the slot thus formed, and are protected under said overhang. To close all of the slot not actually occupied by these levers, there are provided cushions 85 and 86 of sound-deadening material, the two-ply margins of said cushions being clamped between bars 87 to form units, which are mounted respectively upon the rear falce of front wall 83 to project rearwardly therefrom, and upon the top of front plate 52 to extend forwardly therefrom, so that said cushions contact. Since the carriage-release lever operates upwardly and downwardly, it will not disturb the cushions in its operation, whereas, the line-space lever or handle 22 moves slightly forward when actuated and compresses the cushion 85. When the handle 22 is allowed to return, the cushion 85 will be restored to normal. To add to the resiliency of cushion 85 to facilitate its restoration when the distorting force is removed, there is pro-vided within cushion 85 a resilient tube 90.l
The typewriting machine is thus completely enclosed at the front, sides, rear and top, and sounds arising in the typing operation may be further deadened by mounting the machine upon a sound-deadening base, such as 10. The base 10 is composed of sounddeadening material, preferably felt, which is not readily attachable to the casing and which vwould tend to yield beneath the weight of the typewriting machine, should it be attempted to liftthe casing with the machine resting on the pad. It is, therefore, desirable to provide means to enable the pad to be secured tothe casing and to reinforce thel base, particularly at rthe points which bear the weight of the machine and the casing. For this purpose, the pad 10 comprises preferably an upper layer 93 and al lower layer 94, therev being interposed beween said layers a reinforcing frame com posed of strips 95, 96 and 97. 4The reinforcing strip 97 is seated into the upper surface of the lower layer 94 and extends laterally of the casing, the latter being attached to the strip 97 by. means of screws 98, sai-d screws having shoulders 99 operating on flanges 100v fixed to the sides of the casing,
the lower threaded portions- 101 of the screws 98 operating in threaded openings 102 in the strip to draw the strip and casing together. Thel upward movement of the stripI 97 and the downward movement of the casing are limited byA the weight of the machine, whose feet 11 rest' upon strips 95 and 96 positioned in the lower face of layer 93, the forward ends of the strips engaging under sections 48 of the front wall, and the A rear ends engaging under the rear wall 45 of the casing. The strip 97 serves not merely as a support for the casing, but as a means locating the casing on the base. The strips 95 and 96 are sopositioned that feet 11 will rest upon said'strips when the casing hasv been attached to strip 97, due to the fact that the casing is provided with front abutments 105 and rear abutments 106, which fix the position of the machine within the casing relative thereto. Means are thus provided for locating the casing relative-ly to the base, and for locating the machine relatively to the casing and hence to the base. To support the casing more firmly upon the base, the body part may be provided with ianges forming an inturned portion of its lower ends, whereby the casing may rest upon the base 10.

A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, said machine comprising a carriage having various operating levers projecting forwardly therefrom, said levers having downward extensions at their outer ends, said casing comprising a body part and a cover part hinged at the rear to said body part, said body part having a front wall provided with an opening large enough to permit passage of the machine there.- through and into said opening, and a removable 't'ront plate mounted on said front wall of the bod;v part for closing said opening, said cover part having afront wall positioned forwardly from the front plate on the body part when the cover part is in lowered position, so that a slot is formed between said front wall of the cover part and said front plate on the body part through which slot said downward extensions pass.
4. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, said machine comprising a carriage having various operating levers projecting forwardly therefrom, said levers having downward extensions at their outer ends, said casing comprising a body part and al cover part hinged at the rear to said body part, said body part having a front wall provided with an opening large enough to permit passage of the machine therethrough and into said casing, a removable front plate mounted on said front wall ofthe body part for closing said opening, said cover part having a front wall positioned Aforwardly from the front plate on the body part when the cover part is in lowered position, so that a slot is formed between sald front wall of the cover part and said front plate on the body part, through which slot said downward extensions pass, and means for closing all of said slot not occupied by the downward lever extensions, said means comprising co-opcrating cushions mounted, respectively, on the front wall of the cover part to project rearwardly therefrom and on said fronty plate to project forwardly therefrom, so i hat the cushions contact.
5. ,t souncl-dcadening casing for a typewriting machine, said machine comprising a slotted guide-plate at the front thereof and key-levers extending forwardly through the slots in said guide-plate, said casing having an opening at the front to' expose said guideplatc and permit. said key-levers to extend outside of the casing, and a plurality of cushions interposed between successive keylevers adjacent said guide-plate to close the portions of the slots in the guide-plate not occupied by the key-levers to prevent escape of sound and to yield locally when the keylevers are operated.
6. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, said machine comprising a slotted guide-plate at the front thereof and key-levers extending forwardly through the slots in said guide-plate, said casing having an opening at the front to expose said guideplate and permit said key-levers to extend outside of the casing, and means for closing the portions of the slots in the guide-plate not occupied by the key-levers to prevent escape of sound, said means comprising a plurality of cushions, formed by vertical folds of resilient sound-deadening material, interposed between adjacent key-levers adjacent said guide-plate, each set of adjacent cushions contacting to close all of the respective slot not occupied by the key-lever operating in said slot.
7. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, said machine comprising a slotted comb-plate at the front thereof and key-levers extending forwardly through the slots in said comb-plate, said casing having an opening at the front to expose said combplate and permit said key-levers to extend outside of the casing, means for closing the portions of the slots in the comb-plate not occupied by the key-levers to prevent escape of sound, said means comprising a. plurality of cushions, formed by vertical folds of re` silient material, interposed between adjacent key-levers, each set of adjacent cushions contacting to close all of the respective slot not occupied by the key-lever operating in said slot, and means for holding said folds at their tops and bottoms adjacent said comb-plate. l
8. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, said machine comprising a slotted comb-plate at the front thereof and key-levers extending forwardly through the slots in said comb-plate, said casing having an opening at the front to expose said combplate and permit said key-levers to extend outside of the casing, means for closing the slots in said comb-plate, said casing comprising a body part and a cover part, said body part having an opening at the front to expose said comb-plate and permit'said keylevers to extend outside of the casing, means for closing the portions of the slots in the comb-plate not occupied by the key-levers to prevent escape of sound, said means comprising a plurality of cushions interposed between adjacent key-levers, each set of adc jacent cushions contacting to close all of the respective slot not occupied by the key-lever operating in said slot, and means for mounting said cushions adjacent the comb-plate, said last-named means comprising rods mounted in said comb-plate., said rods passing through said cushions.
10. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, said machine comprising a slotted comb-plate at the front thereof and key-levers extending forwardly through the slots in said comb-plate, said casing comprising a body part and a cover part, said body part having an opening at the front to expose said comb-plate and permit said key-levers to extend outside of the casing, means for closing the portions of the slots in the comb-plate not occupied by the keylevers to prevent escape of sound, said means comprising a plurality of cushions interposed between adjacent key-levers, each cushion comprising a fold having two-ply margins adjacent the comb-plate,vthe folds of each set of adjacent cushions contacting to close all of the respective slot not occupied by the key-lever operating in said slot, and rods passing through said two-ply margins of the cushions, said rods being mounted in said comb-plate to hold said cushions in position adjacent the comb-plate.

A sound-deadening casing foi` a typewriting machine, said machine comprising a slotted comb-plate at the front thereof and key-levers extending forwardly through the slots in said-comb-p-late, said machine resting on feet which support it above a base, there being an opening between said combplate and the base, saidcasing comprising a front wall'having an opening large enough to permit passage of -the .machine therethrough, a cover plate for closing said front wall, said cover p ate having an opening ex` tending from above the comb-plate to the I, base, cushions mounted on said comb-plate, lone 'cushion between the key-levers of each pair of adjacent key-levers, for closing the rportions of the slots of the comb-plate not occupied by the key-levers, and a plate fixed to said comb-plate for closing the opening between said comb-plate and the base.
15. In combination, a sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, and a "base upon which said casing and typewriting machine rest, said base being composed 0f sound-deadening material, and reinforcing strips Within said base for bearing the weight of said casing and typewriting machine.
16. In combination, a sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, and a base upon which said casing and typewrting machine rest, said base being composed of layers of sound-deadening material secured lto each other, and reinforcing strips positioned between said layers for bearing the weight of the casing and typewriting machine.
17. In combination, a sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, a base upon which said casing and typewriting machine rest, said base being composed of sound-deadening material, and reinforcing strips within said base for bearing the weight of said casing and typewriting machine, and means whereby said casing may be fastened to said base, said means comprising fastening members carried by said casing and engagin one of said reinforcing strips.
18. In combination, a sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, a base upon which said casing and typewriting machine rest, said base being composed of sound-deadening material, and reinforcing strips within said base, and means whereby said casing may be fastened to said base, said means comprising fastening members connecting said casing to said reinforcing strips.
19. In combination, a sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, a base upon which said casing and typewriting ma'- chine rest, said base being composed of sounddeadening material, and reinforcing strips within said base, and means whereby said casing may be fastened to said base, said means comprising fastening members engaging said casing and one of said reinforcing strips to draw said casing and strip together, the other of said reinforcing strips supporting the typewriting machine and being positioned within the base above the strip which supports the casing, to force the latter strip downwardly against the action of the fastening means.
20. In combination, a sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, a base upon which said lcasing and typewriting machine rest,- said base 'being composed of sound-deadening material, and reinforcingl strips within said base for bearing the weight of said casing and typewriting machine, and means whereby said casing may be fastened to said base, said means compris ing fastening members carried byI said casing, one of said reinforcing strips being positioned laterally of the casing, said fastening members engaging the lateral strip to draw lsaid casing and strip together, the other of said reinforcing strips being positioned longitudinally of the casing above said lateral strip, for supporting the typewriting machine and forcing the lateral strip downwardly against the action of the fastening means.
21. In combination, a sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, a base upon which said casing and typewriting machine rest, said base being composed of sound-deadening material, and reinforcing strips within said base for bearing the weight of said casing and typewriting machine, and means whereby said casing may be fastened to said base, said means comprising flanges fixed to said casing, and fastening members passing through said flanges and threaded at one end, one of said reinforcing strips having threaded openings in which said fastening members engage.
22. In combination, a sound-deadening` casing for a typewriting machine, a base upon which said casing and typewriting machine rest, said base being composed of sound-deadening material, and reinforcing strips within said base for bearingfthe weight of said casing and typewriting machine, and means whereby said casing may be fastened to said base, said means comprising flanges fixed-to the sides of said casing, and fastening members passing through said lianges and threaded at one end, one of said reinforcing strips being positioned laterally of the casing and having threaded openings in which said fastening members engage.
23. In combination, a sound-deadening easing for a typewriting machine, a base upon which said casing and typewriting machine rest, said base being composed of layers of sound-deadening material, and reinforcing strips positioned between said layers for bearing the weight of the casing and typewriting machine, and means whereby said casing may be fastened to said base, said means comprising fastening members carried by said casing, one of said reinforcing strips being imbedded in the upier surface ofthe lower layer of the base and positioned laterally of the casing, said fastening members engaging said lateral strip to draw said casing and strip together, the other of said reinforcing strips being positioned longitudinally of the casing in the lower surface of the upper layer of the chine rest, said base being composed of sound-deadening material, and reinforcing strips within said base for bearing the weight of said casing and typewi'iting machine, means whereby said casing may be fastened to said base and positioned relatively thereto, said means comprising fastening members carried by said casing and threaded at one end, one of said reinforcing strips having threaded openings in which said fastening members engage, and means whereby said machine may be positioned within said casing relatively to said.

25. A easing for a typewriting machine, the typewriting machinel comprising a carriage having a forwardly and downwardly-extending finger-piece, the casing comprising an overhang atthe front thereof, said overhang having a slot in its bottom wall through which projects the downwardly-extending portion of the finger-piece on the carriage.

The combination with a typewriting machine having a keyboard-extension and key-levers projecting forwardly into said extension, of sound-deadening means for said machine comprising cushions, one in each interval between successive key-levers, adjacent cushions contacting above and below the key-levers, passing therebetween and yielding locally as the key-levers are operated, and a sound-deadening shield secured to said machine and preventing the escape of sound between said cushions and a base when the typewriting machine is placed on said base.
27. A casing for a typewriting machine, the typewriting machine comprising a carriage having forwardly and downwardlyextending finger-pieces,- said casing comprising a body part having a front wall, and a cover having a front wall positioned forwardly of the front wall of the body part forming an overhang when the cover is closed, the adjacent edges of the front walls providing a slot through which the finger-pieces project downwardly, and slotclosing means arranged lengthwise of the A slot and comprising two oppositely-'disposed cushion elements, said elements being disposed at substantially the same elevation.
28. A casing for a typewriting machine, the typewriting machine comprising a carriage having forwardly and downwardlyextending linger-pieces, said casing comprising a body part and a cover, the body part comprising walls including a front wall, the front wall having an opening therein to enable the machine tol be inserted into the casing, a releasable front plate to close the opening not occup'ied by the machine, and an overhang on said casing, said overhang beingformed by the forward edge of the cover, said finger-pieces projecting downwardly behind the forward edge of the cover and in front of the releasable plate.
29. 4The combination with a casing for a typewriting machine, of a pad to support said casing, a reinforcing frame in said pad, means to locatethe casing relatively to the reinforcing frame in said pad, and means to locate the machine relatively to the casing and to said reinforcing frame.
30. The combination with a typewriting machine, of a sound-deadening easing, a
pad to support the machine and the. casing, a reinforcing structure comprising a main bar and two cross-bars arranged above the main bar, devices to engage the casing and the pad to locate the casing on said pad, and devices to locate the machine relatively to the reinforcing structure of the pad.
31. The combination with a typewriting machine having supporting feet', of a sounddeadening casing, a pad to support the casing and the machine, a reinforcing frame in saidv pad, said reinforcing frame comprising a main bar and two cross-bars disposed above the main bar, devices to engage thercasing and the reinforcing frame to locate the casing on the pad, and devices on theL casingto locate the machine so as to bring the supporting feet of the machine over the cross-bars of the reinforcing frame.
32. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine comprising key-levers, a guide-plate at the front of the machine having slots through which the key-levers extend, feet to support the machine above a base, said casing comprising a body part to rest on said base and having a front wall provided with an opening to permit the machine to be placed within the casing and a Areleasable front plate to close the portions of the opening inthe front wall at the sides of the machine, and a plate removably attached vto the machine at its front to close the opening between the guide-plate and the base.
33. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, said machine comprising key-levers, a guide-plate at the front of the machinefor said key-levers, said guide-plate having slots through which the key-levers extend, removable feet to support the machine above a base, there being an opening beneath the guide-plate, said casing comprising a body part having a front wall with an'opening therein to permit the machine to -be placed within the casing, a releasable close the opening beneath the guide-plate, and ears on said third-named plate, said ears extending beneath the machine so that the plate may be readily attached by the removable feet.
34. A sound-deadening assemblage for a typewriting machine comprising key-levers, a guide-plate at the front of the machine for said key-levers, said guide-plate having slots through which the key-levers extend, feet to support the machine above a base, there being an opening beneath the guide-plate, said assemblage comprising a casing having a front wall with an opening therein topermit the machine to be placed within the casing anda releasable front plate to close the opening in the front wall at the sides of the machine, means secured to the typewriting machine for closing the portions of the slots in the guide-plate not occupied by the keylevers, and means secured to the typewriting machine for closing the opening between the guide-plate and the base.
35. The combination with a sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine comprising key-levers, a guide-plate at the front of the machine for said key-levers, said guide-plate having slots through which the key-levers extend, and feet to support the machine above a base, there being an opening beneath the 'guide-plate, said casing comprising a body part having a front wall with an opening therein to permit the machine to'be placed Within the casing, of a front plate releasably attached to the casingr to close the portions of said opening at the sides of the machine, a plurality of cushions interposed between adjacent key-levers, each pair of adjacent cushions contacting to close all of the corresponding slot not occupied by the key-lever operating therein, and a plate detachably connected with the machine to close the portion of said opening beneath the guide-plate.
36. The combination with a typewriting machine and a sourid-deadening casing therefor, said machine having key-levers with vacant spaces therebetween, and guiding means for said key-levers, said key-levers extending into a forward extension of the machine, the casing comprising walls including. a front wall, the front wall having a cut-out through which the forward extension of the machine projects, of means disposed between the key-levers to prevent the leakage of sound from the casing around the key-levers.
37. The combination with a typewriting machine and a sound-deadening casing therefor, said machine having key-levers with vacant spaces therebetween, and guiding means for said key-levers, said key-levers extending into a forward extension of the machine, the casing comprising Walls including a front wall, the front wall having a cut-out thro-ugh which the forward extension of the machine projects, of means including co-operating cushions, one disposed between the key-levers of each pair of adjacent key-levers, to prevent the escape of sound from the casing between the top of the cut-outand a line below the lower limit of movement of said key-levers.
38. The combination with a typewriting i machine and a sound-deadening casing therefor, said machine having key-levers with vacant spaces therebetween, and guiding means for said key-levers, said key-levers extending into a forward extension of the machine, the casing comprising walls including a front wall, the front wall having a cut-out through which the forward extension of the machine projects, of co-operating cushions, one between the key-levers of each pair of adjacent key-levers, to prevent the escape of sound from the casing around the key-levers, said cushions co-operating with the front wall above the cut-out, and means including a plate disposed beneath the cushions to prevent the escape of sound beneath the cushions.
39. In combination, a sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, and a base upon which said casin and typewriting and machine rest, said ase comprising sound-deadening material and a reinforcing frame formed of transversely and forwardly-and-rearwardly extending bars.
