Upon the release of such pawl roller 13 by the unscrewing or retraction of the screw 5 such pawl roller will automatically lock the head 5 as against retrograde movement on the shaft 2 as the latter is driven and will permit the forward or blade projecting movement on the shaft at any time and will automatically lock such head and cutters as against retrograde movement at any position so attained, as above explained.
Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, without having at tempted to set forth all the forms in which it may be made, or all the modes of its use, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a line reamer, a line shaftcarrying spaced circumferential heads having spirals, a cutter carrying head provided with radially movable cutters having teeth engaged by said spirals, an internally arranged locking device between said cutter carrying head and shaft adapted to automatically lock said head against relative rearward movement when moved forwardly for projecting the cutters into operative set positions, and means operable from the exterior of said head for releasing said locking device for rotating said head in an opposite direction in cutter retracting relation.
2. In a cutter for machine tools, a tool carrying bar,.relatively fixed heads thereon provided with spirals, a relatively circumferentially movable cutter carrying head on said bar between said fixed heads, radially movable cutters carried by and projecting from said head in engagement with said spirals, means for locking said head on said bar between said fixed heads, and means for moving and holding said locking mechanism in released position for turning said head forwardly or rearwardly relatively of said bar for projecting and retracting said cutrelatively fixed head longitudinally toward and from said cutter carrying head when adjusting the latter, means. for automatically locking said cutter carrying head in variable circumferential positions as against retrograde movement, and means operable from the exterior of said cutter carrying head for releasing said locking means and permitting the reverse movement of said head to retract the said cutters.
i. In a line cutter for machine tools, a line shaft provided with relatively circumferentially fixed heads having right and left handed spiral grooves on their inner sides, a circumferentially movable cutter carrying head provided with movable transverse cutters having teeth projected into engagement with said spiral grooves, means for moving one of said circumferentially fixed heads longitudinally toward and from the opposite head and toward and from said cutter carrying head when adjusting the latter, means for locking said head in varying circumferential positions as against movement in vone direction, and automatic means for releasing said locking means for permitting opposite circumferential movement of said head to project or retract the said cutters.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
DAVID LAMBERT.
