Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. DUNBECK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, inv the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding Machines, of which the following is a specification. Y,
The invention isy illustrated as applied to aymolding machine of the type shown in Patent No. 1,472,80'7, dated November 6, 1923. In machines of this type the flask, after being filled with sand, is jolted to pack the sand 1n around the pattern, and after the jolting operation the sand is pressed or squeezed under a heavy pressure. After the squeezing operation the pattern is withdrawn from the mold and then the flask, with the complete mold therein, is lifted from the machine. These flasks are sometimes quite heavy and the removal of them from the molding machine is quite a laborious operation. l
The main object of this inventionl is to rovide means whereby after the mold making operation is finished and the pattern withdrawn from the mold, the flask may be lifted from the flask holding frame and rolled from the molding machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a molding machine with a manually operable mechanism by means. of which the.
flask, with the completed mold therein, may
be slightly raised from' the flask holding frame and then rolled out of or away from the molding machine.

Referring to the various parts by numerals, ldesignates the base of ythe machine. This base carries.v a vertical cylinder 2 which is open at its upper end and closed at its lower end by a horizontal Wall 3 which forms part of the base. On one Side of the base is formed a socket 4 in which is mounted an upstanding rigidpost 5 on the upper end of which is rotatably mounted a Swinging frame arm 6. lThe frame arm 6 carries the upper 'pressure head 7. .In the free end of the frame arm 6 is formed an open aw 8 which is adapted to receive the upper end of an upstanding rod 9 mounted in a socket 10 carried by the base diametrically opposite the'socket 4 so that the upward thrust on the v.head 7 will be taken up in part through the rod 9. When the pressure head is swung into position over the flask the jaw. 8 receives the rod 9 and fits between the thrust nut and collar carried by said rod.
In the cylinder 2 is fitted a large squeezing piston 11. The upward movement of the squeezing piston is limited by headed bolts 12. A small vertically arranged cylinder 13 is formed at the center of the Squeeze piston, the upper end of this cylinder being open and the lower end of said cylinder being formed by the bottom wall of the squeeze piston. A short distance above the bottom` of this cylinder is formed' an exhaust` port 14. Mounted in the smaller cylinder 13 is a jolt piston 15. This piston is provided with a cross wall 16 a short distance upwardly from its lower end. Extendingv through this cross wall is an air supply pipe 17 which leads out through the upper end .of said piston and to an air control valve mounted on the base 1.
Formed integral with the upper end of the jolt piston is a jolt-and-squeezin head 18. The lower end of this head is a apted to rest .on the upper end of the squeeze piston. Formed on the head 18 are four radial diagonal arms 19 Which carry vertically depending tubular sockets 20. n the upper surfaces of the head 18 and the arms 19 are formed ribs 21. These ribs form a horizontal support for a pattern plate holding frame 22, said frame being open and rectangular. The pattern holding frame is secured to the ribs 21 with its center directly over and coincident with the center of the jolt piston. The pattern late 23 is ri idly frame.

In the ends of the base are formed vertical sockets 24 in which are mounted vertical plunger rods 25. The upper ends of these rods are connected to the end bars of the flask supporting frame 26. rlhe end bars are connected together by front and rear bars so that the ask supporting means supporting frame surrounds the l pattern holding frame and in its normal, or at rest, position is in substantially the same horizontal plane as said holding frame. On the front and rear bars of the flask holding frame are formed upstanding parallel flanges 26a on the upper surfaces of which are secured flask receiving rails 27. Flask 27a rests on these rails. The flanges 26a and the rails y27 are slightly shorter than the flask so that the end walls of the flask project slightly beyond the ends of the. rails 27 Ashown clearly in Fig. 1. When the flask holding frame 1s in its lowermost position` the pattern Vplate fits in between the rails 27 and forms the bottom of the flask. In this position of the parts the 'flask holding fra-me is at rest on the upper ends of the sockets 20 so that the said frame and the flask partake of the jolting movement of the head 18.
The flask supporting frame is provided at each corner with a depending rigid iding carried by the head 18. These guide pins assist in accurately guiding. the pattern plate holding frame during the pattern drawing operation. The plunger rods 25 are notched ito receive lockin dogs 29 mounted on rock shafts 30, sai shafts being connected by means of a link and crank l arms so that said locking dogs may be simultaneously released from the plunger rods by means of a foot leverV 31 connected to one of the rock shafts l30.
The supply of compressedair to the jolt and squeeze pistons is controlled by a valve 32 mounted on the base in convenient position for manipulation by the operator.

The flask is placed in position on the pattern late and on the flask holdin frame. ask is filled with sand and t e valve turned to permit air to pass through pipe 17 to lift the jolt iston, the head -24 and the flask carrying ame, until the. exhaust port 14 is uncovered. The jolting operation 1s continued until the sand is properly packed around the pattern. After the joltmg operation the air valveis rotated to supply air through the pipe 33 under the squeeze piston. The pressure head 7 is so positioned that when the squeezing opefation is completed the locking dogs 29 drop into the notches in the plungers 25. When the pressing operation is complete the air valve is turned to exhaust air from beneath the piston 11. This permits the pistons, the head 18, the pattern plate holding frame and the attached pattern plate, to drop to the position shown in Fig. l, but the dogs 29 hold the flask carrying frame in its upper position. The pattern plate holding frame and the pattern plate are guided in their downward drawing movement by the four guide pins 28' and by the squeeze piston 11 moving downwardly in the cylinder 2. When the pattern drawing operation is complete the pattern is freed from the mold Vand the flask is supported above the pattern and is ready to be removed.
The means for lifting the flask from the flask holding frame consists of a pair of lifting conveyor bars 34 extending foreand-aft of the lmachine near each end of the flask holdingframe and close to the ends of the flask 26u andthe flask receiving rails 27. Each bar 34 is pivoted at its rear end to an upstanding lug 35 formed on the rear bar of the flask holding frame. The forward end of each lifting bar 34 is connected to a link 36, whose lower end is pivoted to the end of a crank arm 37. These crank arms are mounted on the ends of a rock shaft 38 which extends across the front of the machine and is journalled in depending brackets 39 formed on the flask holding frame. The rock shaft 38 is provided with an operating handle 40 which normally extends downwardly and forwardly as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. Each lifting bar 34 is provided with a series of rollers 41 which are adapted 'to engage under the end walls of the flask as shown clearly in Figs. l and 5. -In the normal position' of the bars 34 the rollers 41 are below the flask so that said flask may rest directly on therails 27 of the flask holding frame. v
When it is desired to lift the flask from the lflask holding frame or support the operating handle 40 is thrown upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 3. This elevates the forward ends of the lifting bars 34 so .that said bars incline rearwardly and downwardly. The rollers 41 engage under the end bars of the flask so that the flask may then be removed rearwardlyaway from the `thrown beyond the center of the shaft 38 ,and the bars 34 will, locked yin their Ell raised position. The bars 34 and the rollers 41 form in effecta track over which the flask travels.
The flask elevating means is mounted wholly on the flask supporting frame and moves up and down with it. It is manifest that the p-attern must be withdrawn from the mold before the mold can be rolled'rearwardly out of the machine.
While the invention is shown as applied to a certain type of molding machine, it is manifest that it may be applied to any form of molding machine wherein the pattern is withdrawn from the mold or the mold raised off the pattern.
ln order to lock the flask in proper position with respect to the pattern plate and to withdraw said locking means when the pattern is withdrawn 1from the mold, the head 18 is provided with upstanding pins 43 which are arranged to reciprocate through vertical apertures 44 in the flask holding frame. The ask is formed with lugs 45 directly in line with the apertures 44 in the flask holding frame. When the flask holding frame is in its lower position the pins 43 extend up through the apertures in the lugs 45, thereby properly positioning the flask with respect to the pattern plate. When the pattern is withdrawn, as shown in Fig. 3 the locking pins 4,3 are withdrawn from the lugs 45 and the flask is then free to be moved on the rollers 4l rearwardly out of themachine.
What l claim is:
l. A molding machine comprising a ask support, a pattern drawing mechanism, a track means, and means to shift the track means upwardly to lift the flask free from the ask support and position it for movement over the track means outwardly away from the machine.
2. ln a foundry machine, a flask support, shiftable flask-lifting and conveying means provided with anti-,friction flask-engaging elements, and means for raising one end of the said conveying means to raise the flask .l from its support and thereby permit the lid dask to move outwardly and downwardly over the antifriction elements away from the machine.
3. A molding machine comprising a pattern plate holding means, a ask supporting means, means for holding the flask supporting means to withdraw the pattern from the mold, and shiftable Hask lifting and conveying means for raising the flask free from the flask supporting means and positioning it for outward movement away from the machine over said conveying means.
4. A molding machine comprising a pattern plate holding means, a flask supporting means, means for forcing the pattern plate holding means and the ask supporting means upwardly to squeeze andfcompact the sand in the flask, means for holding the flask supporting means in an elevated position while the pattern holding means is lowered to withdraw the pattern from the mold, and manually operable means mounted on the flask supporting means for lifting the Vflask from the flask supporting means, said lifting means comprising a pair of vlifting and conveyor bars carrying a series of rollers adapted to engage the, end walls of the flask, said bars in, their4 elevated position inclining rearwardly and downwardly.
5. A molding machine comprising a pattern plate holding means, a flask supporting means, means for forcing the pattern plate holding means and the flask supporting means upwardly to squeeze and compact the sand in the flask, means for holding the flask supporting means in an elevated posi-v tion while the pattern holding means is lowered to withdraw the pattern froml the mold, and manually shiftable flask lifting and conveying means mounted on the flask supporting means for raising the flask free from the flask supporting means and positioning it for outward movement from the machine over the conveying means.

A molding machine comprising a pattern plate holding means, a flask supporting means, means for forcing the pattern plate holding means and the flask supporting means upwardly to squeeze and compact the sand in the flask, means for holding the flask supporting means in an elevated position while the pattern holding means is lowered to withdraw the pattern from the mold, a shiftable flask lifting and conveying means carried by the flask supporting means normally below the flask, and means for raising the forward end of the said conveying means to raise the flask from its supporting means and thereby permit the flask to move rearwardly and downwardly on the conveyor away from the molding machine.
7. A molding machine comprising a pattern plate holding means, a flask supporting means, means for forcing the pattern plate holding means and the flask supporting means upwardly to squeeze and compact the sand/.in the flask, means for holding the flask supporting means in an elevated position while the pattern holding means is lowered to withdraw the pattern from the mold, a shiftable flask lifting and conveying means normally below the flask, and means for raising the forward end ofthe said conveying means to raise the. flask from its supporting means and thereby permit the flask to move rearwardly and downwardly on the conveyor away from the molding machine.

A molding machine comprising a pattern plate holding means, a flask supporting m/eans, means for holding the flask supporting means while the pattern plate holding means is lowered to withdraw the pattern from the mold, `track means normally below the flask, and means to elevate the track 'to engage and lift the flask free ,from its whereby the flask is lifted from its support and permitted to move over said inclined track means downwardly and outwardly away from the machine.
`10. In a foundry machine, a flask support, a flask lifting and conveying track normally below the flask, and means to elevate and incline the track to engage and lift the.
flask from its support, said track Ibeing provided with anti-friction elements over which the flask is adapted to move downwardly and outwardly away from the machine when the track is elevated and inclined.
11. A molding machine comprising a pattern plate holding means, a flask'supporting means, means for holding the flask supporting means while the pattern plate holdinglmeans is lowered to withdraw the pattern from the mold, a shiftable flask lifting and conveyor track, and means to shift the track upwardly whereby the track engages and lifts the flask free from its support and positions it for outward movement away from the machine over the track.

A molding machine comprising a pattern plate holding means, a flask supportingmeans, means for holding the flask supporting means whilethe pattern plate holding means is lowered to withdraw the pattern from the mold, a shiftable flask lifting and conveyor track,.and means to shift the track upwardly and incline it, whereby the flask is engaged by the track and lifted free from its supporting means and positioned for downwardand outward movement away from the machine over the inclined track.

A foundry apparatus .comprising a flask support, a flask conveyor track located adjacent the flask support, means to support said track and hold it inst lateral movement away from the flask support, and means to cause a relative vertical movement between the flask support andi the conveyorv gagement with each other to separate the flask from its support and to transfer the flask directly to the conveyor track for lateral movefnent over and along said track away from thefflask support.
14.` A foundry apparatus comprising a flask support, a pattern drawing mechanism, a flask conveyor track located adjacent the flask support, and means to cause a relative vertical movement between the flask support and the conveyor track to cause the conveyor track and a flask on the sup -rt to be brought into engagement with each other and the flask thereby separated from theflask support and transferred directly to the conveyor track in position to be moved laterally over and along the conveyor track above the flask smpport outwardly from the apparatus.
15. A foundry apparatus comprising a flask support, a mold squeezing mechanism, a flask conveyor track located adjacent the flask support, means to support said track and hold it against lateral movement away from the flask support, and means to cause` a relative vertical movement between the\ flask support and the conveyor track to cause the conveyor track and a flask on the flask support to be brought into engagement with each other and the flask thereby separated from the flask support and transferred directly to the conveyor track in position to be moved laterally over and along the conveyor .track above the flask support outwardly from the apparatus. -1

A molding machine comprising a mold squeezing mechanism, a flask support fixed laterally with relation `to the mold squeezing mechanism, a flask conveyor mounted on the machine adjacent the flask support, and means to cause a relative vertical movement between the flask support and the conveyor *to cause the conveyor and a f flask on' the flask support to be brought into engagement with each otherv and the flask thereby separated from the flask support and transferred directly to the conveyor in position to be movedy laterally over and along the conveyor above the flask support outwardly from the machine.
17. A molding machine comprising a mold squeezing mechanism, a flask support fixed laterally with 4relation to the mold squeezing mechanism, a flask track mounted upon the machine adjacent the flask support, means to support the track and hold it against lateral movement away from the flask support, and means to cause a relative vertical movement between the flask support andthe track to cause the track. and a flask on the flask support to be brouglht into engagement with each other and t e flask thereby separated from the flask support and transferred directly to the flask track in position to be moved laterally overand Ialong' the track maaar? above the flask Support outwardly from the machine.
18. A molding machine comprising arnold squeezing and jolting mechanism, a pattern drawingV mechanism, a flask sup-port fixed laterally with relation to the pattern drawing mechanism, a flask conveyor track mounted on the machine adjacent the flask support, and means to cause a relative vertical movement between the flask support and the conveyor track to cause the conveyor tmtl and a flask on the flask support to be lbrought into engagement with each other and the flask thereby separated from the flask support and transfer-red directly to the conveyor track in position to be moved laterally over and along the conveyor track above the flask support outwardly from the machineo i lln testimony whereof lhereunto affix my 2@ si gnature.
