UNITED STATES EMMA BEATRICE BENSON, 013 BEVERLY, KANSAS.
SKE'IN HOLDER.
Application filed January 11, 1924. Serial No.,68 5,625.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMABEATRIGE BEN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Lincoln and State of Kansas, have invented certain new new and useful Improvements in Skein Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in skein holders particularly useful to those practicing the embroidery art, the primary object of the invention residing in the provision of a skein holder wherein a plurality of skeins of embroidering material may be placed within the holder and this in spaced relation to each other, whereby the different strands of material forming the skeins are held in tort relation and whereby the different strands of the different skeins may be withdrawn when desired without any liability of tangling the remaining strands of the different skeins. V
A still further'objeet of the invention is to provide a holder of the above character wherein skeins are not only maintained as above set forth, but wherein the same are fully protected from any dirt or dust that might arise in the room wherein the embroiderer is working.
A still further object resides in the provision of a skein holder wherein the same may be readily roll-ed into a compact form and stored away when not in use, and this without the necessity of removing the different skeins therefrom.
Yet anotherobject is to provide a skein holder wherein the same may be manufactured and marketed at extremely small cost, the same embodying but a relatively few pieces of material, and these so stitched or correlated as to reduce the possibility of disarrangement of pieces of material to a minimum.
lVith the above and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form of a skein holder hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a skein holder constructed in accordance with the present invention, r
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail, transverse,
cross-sectional view thereof, and
Figure- 3 is a fragmentary, longitudinal, view taken through one end of the skein holder.
Now having specific reference to the drawing, skein holder constructed in ac cordance with the present invention embodies a backing 5 of suitable fabric, the same being of a relatively long and wide nature, the corners of which are, as clearly shown in Figure y 1, rounded. Arranged transversely upon opposite ends of said backing strip 5 are relatively narrow strips of similar fabric, 66, while arranged intermediate said end strips 66 in slightly spaced relation thereto and in spaced relation to each other, are substantially squareshaped strips of material 77.
Surrounding the edges of said backing strip 5, is a single length strip of reinforcing material 8 that is stitched to the edges of said backing strip and also serves as a means for securing the horizontal edges of said strips 7-7 to the adjacent edges of said backing strip 5, this reinforcing material also serving as a means when the same is stitched to the edges of the-backing material for securing thereto the outer and end edges of said end strips 6-6.
The inner edges of said end strips 6-6 are reinforced in a suitable manner as at 6-6, it being however noted from a consideration of Figure 3, that said inner edges of these strips 6 are not secured to the backing strip 5, these strips-cooperating with the ends of the backing strip for providing pockets 9 for the reception of the ends of the different skeins of material A.
The opposite ends of the square-shaped strips of material 77 are also reinforced as at 11 and for providing longitudinal pockets 12 for the reception of the different skeins of embroidering materiah'horizontal rows of stitching are extended through said strips 7 7 and the backing 5 throughout the combined length of said strips 7-7. It is preferable that these different rows of stitches be formed from a continuous stitching operation. r j
It Will thus be seen that I have provided a skein holder that includes a plurality of longitudinal pockets for holding a plurality of skeins of material and that complementary to the remote ends o' f-said pockets single pockets are formed for receiving the ends ofthe different skeins for consequently preventing the same from becoming dirty and the like. provision of a skein holder of thepresent nature, certain strands of different skeins of material may be readily removed from the holder without any liability of tangling the different strands of material.
Numerous advantages of a skein holder of this character willbe at once appreciated by those working in the art to which this invention pertains and even though I have herein set forth the most-practical embodiment of the invention with which I am at this time familiar, it is nevertheless to'be understood thatminor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope-ofthe appended claim.
It will also be seen that by A skein holder of the class described in c'luding a strip of flexible material, a piece of flexible material having its edges fixed to the edges of the strip, a second piece of flexible material having its edges fixed to the edges ot' the strip, means for attaching the pieces to the strip along longitudinal spaced lines for forming compartments, the compartments in between the strip and the first piece being aligned with the respective compartments in between the strip and the second'piece, andpockets formed at the ends of the strip and opentoward the compartments, the ends of the compartments being open so thatskeins may be extended through the compartments and terminate in the pockets.
In testimony whereof-I aflix my signature. 1
EMMA BEATRICE BENSON.
