To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOSEPH E. FAZAKER- may, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Hospital Beds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains' to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hospital beds of the type in which the mattress support is provided with a pair of transverse separable sections, and means are provided for elevating a bed pan into the space between said sections, when the latter are spread, beds of this nature being shown by my U. S. Patents Nos. 1,203,721 and 1,257,072.
()ne object of the present invention is to generally improve and simplify upon the construction previously used for elevating the pan, when the separable sections of the mattress support are spread.
1n carrying out the above end, acarrier is provided for upward movement when the separable sections of the mattress support are separated, and a further object is to provide aunique form of bed pan rest mounted on said carrier and equipped with novel means for swinging it upwardly when the carrier nears its upward limit of movement, so as to conveniently position the bed pan for the patients use.
With the foregoing and minor objects in view, the invention resides in the novel sub ject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.

In the. drawings above briefly described, the numeral 7 designates a mattress-supporting spring capable of use on practically any of the well-known types of beds such as those commonly used in hospitals, sanitariums and the like, said spring being preferably of the link and spring construction shown, suitable means 7' being provided for stretching said spring from time to time, as occasion may require. Also, the spring 7 is preferably provided along its edges with hooks H, by means of which a sheet may be held in a stretched condition ever the head and foot sections of a mattress M. The spring 7 includes a pair of transversely separable sections 8 carried within rectangular frames 9 which slide upon a main supporting frame 10 of elongated rectangular form said frame being secured at its front and rear sides to the head and foot portions of the spring 7 so as to be supported principally thereby, being thus capable of movement with said spring as the latter yields under the movements of the patient.
The frame 10 is preferably in the form of a casting with its end bars 11 longitudinally depressed, and the side bars 12 of said frame are preferably of inverted T-shape in cross section, the frames 9 being slidably supported'on the inner flanges of said bars 12, while the head and foot portions of the spring 7 are detachably connected to the outer flanges. By this arrangement, the entire frame 10 and all parts carried thereby may be re-' moved when required for cleaning and sterilizing. The bars 11 are preferably supported by spring 11 resting on parts of the bed frame.
Extending transversely beneath the spring 7, innnediately in rear of the frame 10, is an operating shaft 13 having suitable handles 14 in convenient reach of the patient. The shaft 13 carries a pair of beveled gears 15 meshing with similar gears 16 on short longitudinal shafts 17 which carry gears 18 meshing with rack bars 19 on the lower sides of the frames 9. The shaft 13 is .mounted in bearings 20 carried by the rear side bar 12 of the frame 10, while other bearings E21 depend from said bar is rotatably support the shafts 17.
By the construction so far described, which is very similar to that disclosed in Patent 1,257,072, it will be seen that a forward. push on either of the handles 14 will slide the tudinally disposed carrying arm 26 is piv oted, the free end of this arm being preferebly forked as indiceted st 27. thus elevating the plate 29 end the bed pun 22. To more conveniently position this pen for use however, than would be possible it p it always rested upon the plate 29, I provide the construction described below.

In the construction shown, plate 33 is formed with hinge knuckles 34: and s rod 35 connects these knuckles with the plate 29, said rod and knuckles being disposed at the edge of plate 33 remote from the pivoted end of erm 26. Fulcrumed between its euds on the rod 35-, i have shown a. lever 36, one end of which normally underlies the plate 38, while its other end 37 is in position to strike one ber12 0f the frame 10, when the bed pan elevating means is swung upwardly as shown in Fig. 2. Thus, as the plate 29 nears the limit oi its upward movement, the lever end 37 strikesthe frame 10 and said lever is thus rocked upon its fulcrum, so that its inner end swings the rest 33 upwardly, during which movement, said rest swings the bed pan'22 upwardly from the supporting plate 29 and properly positions it within the then existing opening between the. frames 9. When one of the handles 14 is operated to return the frames 9 to their initial positions, the bed pen 22 and its supporting means descend by gravity and the pen may then be easily removed for clean- 1n Prefcrsbly' used in connection with the features above described-ere two indicators 38 which are slidebly supported in bearings 39 carried by the end hers 11 of the frame 10. It will be seen from the foregoing that u greatly simplified coi'istruction has been provided a nd'that such construction will be very desirable and advantageous. Excellent results may be obtained from the details disclosed and they may therefor-she followed if desired, but withintho scopes-t the iii-- vention as claimed, numerous modifications may he roads.
I claim: I
1. In combination, a mattress supportiir eluding an open transverse frame between its heed and foot portions and a pair of separable sections slid-ably carried by said frame, a normally lowered vertically sw1ngable bed pun support pivoted under the mattress support on an axis transverse to the letter, a transverse shaft mounted under the mattress support at one side of said frame end spaced from the axis of said bed pun support, on operating handle :Eorseid she/ft, operative connections between said she-ft and said separable sections of the inattress support for sliding the letter in said frame, and a crank carried by said shaft and positioned to engage and raise said bod pen support whenseid shaft turned to spread seiilt separable sections of the mattress sup- POM 2.
