To aZZwhom it may cof/wem.'
. .Be it known that I, MATTHEW WESTRATE; a citizen of theJUnitedfStates, residing at (handRapids, inthe county .of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new4 andv useful Improvements in Jacks, of which the 'following is a specification.
.The present invention relates to meclianical organizations and the samein connection Kwith-jacks and the like; and its object is to provide an improved mechanical organizationfof the character hereinafter dethe like is scribed, and the same in connection with a lifting jack.
This and any other objects hereinafter appearing are attained by', fand the invention finds preferable embodimenty in, the mechanism 'hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aside View of a jack;
Figure 2 is a verticall central sectional..
view of a portionthereof;
Fi ure 3 is a horizontal sectional 'View o?l certam parts'taken on line 3-3 of Figures v1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view of certainparts taken on line 4.-'4..of Figure l; Figure 5 is en -end view of certain parts; Figure 6 is avertioal sectional view of certain parts taken on line 6-6 of Figure 1 arms 4, -5, carrying the top member. 6 adaptfl edto engage the axle or other art of the automobile being raised. Each o these arms isv formed of parallel members as indicated in various views, the upper ends ofeach l:pair of arms being swingably connected to the lower ends of the pair above,'by bolts 7-passing through spacing sleeves 8, except that the upper ends of the short uppermost pair are swingably connected by a bolt 9 to the top member 6; and the arms of each pair (except the uppermost pair of short arms) being swingably /connected in the middle.
In the lowermost pair of arms-being arms 2 and 3-y-such swingableconnection is efected by Ibolts 10l passing through their middle portion and tireaded in a block 11.
This block has an axially 'vertical `bore 20v in whi-cha nut 12 vhas an axial movement limited by its' radial flange 13'b'elow the block, this nut being held non-turnably in axially verticalscrew 16'isl 'journalled at 17 on the base 1 andxisthrealded in the nut 12.
the bore 20 by means'of its spline 14 slidf l able 1n the keyway 15, of the block. An
The lower ends. ofthe lowermost pair 2, 3
of the armsare'swingably connecte 'by bolts 18, 19 to a pairof blocks 40,. 41 respectively,
which are slidably movable horizontally in the gi`11des 22, 23 ofthe base. These blocks' 40, 41 have axially horizontal bores 24 in which nuts 25, 26 respectively have an axial movement limited by their radial vflanges 27 adjacent the outer ends of the blocks, these nuts 25,26 being held non-turnably -in the bores 24 by meansof their said langes ber' ing slidably guided inthe guides 22, 23. A horizontally axial shaft 28 journalled at 30 1n the base `has right-hand and left-hand -screw portions 31, 32A threaded in the nuts 25, 26,-respective1y. A bevel'gear 33 on the vshaft 28 meshes with lthe bevel gear'34' on the vertical screw 16, so that the rotation of this shaft will rotatesa'id screw.
In the position ofthe parts seen in Fig- -ure 1, the arms 2 and 4 are approximately at right angles to the other arms 3 and 5 of the respective'pairsl thereof, thej radial flange l1 3 of nut l12 engaging the lower end. of the block 11 and the radial llanges'27 of the pair,of, nuts 25,26engagingthe outer ends o-f the pair` of blocks 40 and.- 41
respectively. i
Inthis position, ,the flange 13 is about to disengage the block 11 and the flanges 27 have just l been brought into engagement vwith the blocks 40, 41 in the operative or raising f'movementv of after explained.
WVhen the top member 6 is its lowest i position (the lazy-tongs structure being vertically collapsed), the lower ends of the arms 2 and 3 are separated to their farthest Vthe jack, as herein-y extent, the flanges 27 being farthest away from the blocks 40 and 41-respectively, and the block 11 rests on the flange 13. The shaft 28 being now rotated to raise the top member 6 in the jacks operative movement,
' the vertical screw'l is rotated,` thus raising the nut'51'2 and block 11 with it and causing the top member 6 to rise. During this operation, the flanges 27 approach their blocks ll, il respectivelyc v When the arms erel raised to approximately the position seen in Figure l, these anges 2 7 engage vthe blocks All); 41 and thus lcontinue the operative movement of the jack, but, at this juncture the blochll is carried out of engagemeiit with the flange 13m? not It willv thus be seen that. power to reise the jack is first app-lied to. the block ll, land then to the .block-s 4G' and il to continue such lll raising movement, the power thus operating to the best advantage in either case.,
A coiled spring 55 is desirably providedv .between the block ll` end'flengell to cushl scribedzswingab-ly connected arms; ineens ion -the transition of operation between block ll and blocks 40 and el. A crank Snot shown) ma f be applied to the driving sieft connected by a universal joint 5i ,to the shaft 28, and this shaft 50 may be laterellgT moved in a vertical direction into end out cfa beeriog 52, 'on the base, openn ing upwardly at 53, provided for the purpose of folding the parts together ccm-4 pectly, .l
lit' will be seen. thet tlm mechanical organizatioii. abovedescribed may be applied4 to other uses than to operate` c liftingl Ajack, and desire to claim, the same broad y. The invention being intended be pointed out in theclaims, ienotto be llmited or by details of' construction of the per-f ticular embodiment thereof illustrated,- by the drawings orhereinbefore described.
