PATENT OFFICE..
rEoRIA, ILLINOIS.
IMPRovl-:MENT IN CORN-PLANTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,347, dated August 25, 1874; application filed June 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, JAMES SELBY, of the city of Peoria, in the county of Peoria, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improve: ment in Gorn-Droppers or Gut-Offs for (Jorn- Planters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactl description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which- Figure l represents a plan view of upper surface of the cut-olf, and upon which the corn or seed lies; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of cut-olf and slide along dotted line a a, Fig. 1, which also represents a longitudinal section of the adjoining valve-holes, &c., in the other half of the cut-off and slide; Fig. 3, a view of the under side of the cut-0E, the slide removed; Fig. 4, a plan view of slide; Fig. 5, a
eross-section ofthe cut-off along line b b, Fig. 3; Fig. 6, a cross-section along line dd, Fig. 3; Fig. 7, a cross-section of slide along line c c Fig. 7.
This invention relates to that class of droppers which have an upper and lower horizontal cut-off plate, two holes for the passage of I. corn, and a slide with a double-armed adjustable plate, which regulates the size of the corn-passages.
My improvement consists in providing recessed spring cut-olf valves at the head of the corn-passages, with a `stop or cross-piece extending across the neck of each valve,V behind the vibrating head e of the same, to prevent the friction of the head of the valve against the slide; also, in cutting away the inferior surface of the cut-off plate around the recesses, which include the valves, for the purpose of doing away with that much extra friction; also, in the shape and arrangement of thecorn-stirrers, which follow their respective corn-passages f in the slide, one stirrer being placed on each arm, and the cut-off plate above cut away for the passage of the same back and forth.
In the drawings, A represents the cut-off plate, which forms the floor of the seed-box, a a representing the usualigcorn-passages, and e k e k the valves, each of which has a flat oblong head, e, which plays vertically in a recess behind the arched end of the corn-pas-v sage a in the cut-off plate, to which they are each riveted or screwed through the end of ktheir respective flat, spring-like stems k k. Across the neck of each valve, and forming a continuous flat surface with the inferior face of the said cut-off plate is a stop or crosspiece, h, riveted or screwed in a recess for that purpose in said cut-off, for the purpose of keeping the face or head e of the valve from rubbing upon the slide B B', but still allowing the two to approach each other as near as may be without touching, to avoid friction. The corn-passages a a and the valves e k e k are surrounded, or partially so, with a depression, z z, &c., in the surface of the cutoff plate A, (seen in profile in sections, Figs.
5 and\6,) in such a manner as toleavea rib or low wall round the valves and corn-passages, the top of which is level with the general face of the plate. Bl represents vthe usual slide, and B the usual dou .armed corn-passage adjuster. (Seen in pl the latter are provide projections d d, lying? on the surface of and parallel with each arm, each in a line withv the corn-passages f j', and are intended to push or looseni the corn about the holes, and may be attached to or made removable from the slide at convenience. Grooves b b are cut in the inferior surface of the cut-olf plate A, at each end of same, for the passage"`back and forth (with the slide) of the stirrers d d.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A cut-off having the spring-valves e la e 7c embedded in its under side, with cross-pieces or detents h h on the neck of each valve, and the depressions z z, 85o., around both valves and corn-passages a a, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In combination with the valves e k .e k and the cut-olf A, the detents h h, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. A cut-off plate provided with grooves b b on its under surface, leading to each corn-passage and valve, for the reception and passage back and forth of the stirrers el d, attached to the slide below, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing cutolf for corn-planters, I have hereunto set my hand this 23d `day of June, A. D. 1874.
