UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
set. L. BUSCHMAN, OF NEW YORK, 11. K, ASSIGNOR 'ro METAL PACKAGE CORPORATION OF NEW YORK, or NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION or NEW YORK.
CONTAINER.
Application filed March 11, 1924. Serial No. 698,423. I
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOL L. BUsoHM N acitizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inv Containers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to containers preferably of the sheet metal type, the invention relating more particularly to the construction of the upper or neck portion of the container together with the closure mem-- cap to be manually screwed or applied in sealing position on the neck with facility and without the use of a wrench or other tool. v
To the above ends the invention consists in the novel container and parts thereof hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
Referring in detail to the drawing:
Fig. 1 indicates a top plan ,view of the container and Fig. 2 indicates afront elevation of the upper part of the container, the neck and cap being shown in section.
Referring to the drawing:
1 indicates the body of the container to which is secured in any desirable manner the breast 1 which may be provided with upwardly extending shoulders 2 and 3 for strengthening purposes. Preferably integral with said breast or with the shoulder 3 thereof is a screw-threaded neck 4 having at its upper end an inwardly extending annular flange 5 having an annular, substantially horizontal extension 5' forming the mouth of the container. Said flange 5 is provided intermediate its outer and inner peripheral edges with an annular inverted head or depression 6 the formation of which, as is obvious, produces an upwardly extending annular bead 7 at the outer peripheral edge of said flange 8 indicates a screwthread'ed cap adapted to be screwed on the neck 4. The upper wall of said cap may be provided with a central slightly depressed or indented portion 9. An annular inverted bead or depression 10 is also formed in said cap said inverted head or depression producing or forming an upwardly extending annular head 11 at the outer periphery or edge ofthe upper wall of said cap.
If so desired a washer 12 made of foil-lined felt or any other suitable material may be inserted within said cap before it is screwed in position on the neck 4. When the capis so screwed in position as shown in Fig. 2, the depressed or indented portion 9 of the cup closes the mouth of the container formed by the extension 5 and bears against said extension, the annular head or depression 6 interfits with and closely engages the inverted bead or depression 10 and the head 7 interfits with and closely engages the bead 11, thereby providing an effective closure or seal for the container to prevent leakage of its contents. The effective seal obtains at three distinct places and in different planes on the inwardly turned flange of the neck, to wit: at the extension 5 and at and adjacent the points 6 and 7, while the same is also true of the cap, the seal being at a part of the indented portion 9 and at and'adjacent the points 10 and 11. This provides an extremely tight seal having a large sealing surface area which acts; to efl'ectively close or seal the container. Furthermore, the beads on the flange act to greatly stiffen said flange and the neck generally.
It has been found in practice that the construction described functions so eflectively that it is not necessary to screw the cap very tightly into position on the neck by means of a wrench or other tool as is very often the case in analogous types of containers, it being merely necessary to manually screw it firmly on the neck. It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the use of the washer 12 but that the washer might be dispensed with in some cases although I prefer to use it. When it is used and the cap is screwed into closed position on the neck the shape of the washer is deformed and follows the contour of the beads and depressions described, it being forced out of a horizontal plane. The central portion of the washer in some cases may be forced downwardly by the, depression 9 of the cap into the mouth of the container to effectively close it.
that I claim as my invention is 1. A container provided with a neck having a sealing surface comprising an inwardly extending annular flange, said flange including an upwardly extending peripheral head above and substantially in alinement with said neck, an annular depression adj acent thereto, and a relatively plane surface projecting inwardly of said depression, and a cap adapted to pass over said neck and be secured thereto, said cap including a portion having a configuration corresponding, to the sealing surface of said neck and interfitting tl'ierewitlr.
2. A container provided with a neck having a sealing surface comprising an in wardly extending annular flange, said flange including an upwardly extending peripheral bead above and substantially in alinement with said neck, anannular depression adj acent thereto, and a relatively plane surface projecting inwardly of said depression, and a cap adapted to pass over said neck and be secured thereto, said cap including a portion having a configuration corresponding to the sealing surface of said neck and interfitting therewith and a compressible washer extending across the interior of said cap and adapted to fill the said beads and depressionstherein.
.3. A container provided with a screwthreaded neck having an inwardly extending annular flange integral therewith, said neck being provided with: an inverted beadinter mediate its inner and outer peripheral ed es and with an annular head at its outer peripheral edge and a screw-threaded cap adapted to; be screwed on said neck and provided with an inverted annular bead in its upper wall adjacent its periphery and with a bead at itsperiphery, theinverted bead engage and interfit respectively with the invertedbead and bead of the flange of said neck when the cap is screwed into position on said neck to close the mouth of the container.
4:. A container provided with a screwthreaded neck having an inwardly extending annular flange integral therewith and forming the mouth of the container, said neck being provided with an inverted bead intermediate its inner and outer peripheral edges and with an annular bead at its outer peripheral edge in a diiierentplane than said inverted bead and a screwthreaded cap adapted to be screwed on said neck and provided with an inverted annular head in its upper wall adjacent its edge and with a head at its edge, said beads being in different planes, the inverted bead and bead of said cap being adapted to closely engage and interfit respectively with the inverted bead and bead of the flange of said neck to close the mouth of the container and to provide a tight seal between said neck and cap when said cap is screwed into position on said neck.
5'. A container provided with a neck having an inwardly extending annular flange provided with an annular extension, with an annular depression therein and with a head at its outer edge and a cap provided witlr a central indented portion, with an annular depression and with a bead at its periphery, said extension, annular depression and head on said inwardly extending flange being adapted to engage respectively the indented portion annular depression and-bead of the cap when said cap isapplied to said neck.
