To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVILLIAM F. KRAUT- 'lER, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the following is afull, clear, concise,and exact description.
My invention relates to looks, .being a division of my original application Serial No. 474,681, filed June 3, 1921.
The lock of my invention, and forming the subject matter of the present application, comprises the bolt thereof, a spring for pressing the bolt into locking position, a key actuated bolt withdrawing member serving, in one adjustment, to place the bolt in unlocking position and, in an alternative adjustment, adjusting said spring to function, a restraining member for holding the bolt in withdrawn position against the force of said spring when the key actuated memher is adjusted to place said springin bolt locking adjustment, and a detent for holding the restraining member in functioning position, said detent being withdrawable from its functioning position to permit said spring to place the bolt in locking position,

The lock is an improvement upon the type of lock disclosed in the patent to Samuel L. Terry, 1,206,944, dated December 5, 1916, and disclosing a lock for locking steering posts of automobiles. I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Fig. 1 is a sectional plan view of the look as employed in association with the steering post and column of an automobile; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1
showing some of the parts in another adj ustment; Fig. 4 1s a sectional view on line 4E 1 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 1s a view generally similar to Fig. 1 but showing parts in figures.
The lock of my invention is shown in as sociation with the stationary steering column 1 and the rotatable steering post 2 of an automobile. The casing of the *lock is clamped upon the stationary steering column, andin order that it may be readily applied thereto, the casing is formed into two sections 3.and 1. The casing'section 3 is formed with a recess 5 thatis margined by a lip 6. The casing section 4 is formed with a 1i) 7 that interengages with the lip 6 when tie casing sections are assembled. A dowel pin 8 is at the other end of the casing and takes part in maintaining the casing sections in proper relation when the casing is closed. Screws 9 are freely slipped through the casing section 3 into threaded connection with the casing section 4. The
portions of these screws that do not extend into the casing section 4 are formed with annular channels 10 in their sides. A locking member 11 is formed with a slot 12 that receives a pin 13 eccentrically disposed upon a key actuatedcylindrical element 14, this key actuated element being mounted in the casing section 1 and constructed in any suitable way'to provide key controlled means whereby the element 14 may only be turned in response to the operation ofa key 15,

Itewill be observed thatlthe restraining vrnernber, by engaging the withdrawn detent, prevents this detent from auto1natically assuminga functioning position while the steering post is being turned .to bring the opening or socket 26 thereof into register with the bolt. If it were not for this rcstraining member the detent would have to be held in a withdrawn position byhand while the steering post is being turned into locking position. Because of the presence of the restraining member it is simply necessary to withdraw the detent which is automatically held in its withdrawn position by the restraining member while the bolt is riding upon the smooth portion of the steering post as the latter is being turned to bring its opening 26 into register with the bolt.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1. In a lock, the combination with the bolt thereof; of a spring for pressing the bolt into locking position; a key actuated bolt withdrawing member serving, in one adjustment, to place the bolt in unlocking position and, in an alternative adjustment, adjusting said spring to function; a restraining member for holding the bolt in withdrawn position against the force of said spring when the key actuated member is adjusted to place said spring in bolt locking adjustment; a detent for holding the restraining member in functioning position; and a spring for holding the detent in functioning position, said detent being withdrawable from its functioning position in opposition to said latter spring to permit the first aforesaid spring to place the bolt in looking position, said restrainingmember beingmovable, when the detent is withdrawn, by the first aforesaid spring into holding engagement with the detent to prevent the return of the detent to functioning position said key actuated member having restoring engagement with the restraining member when the key actuated member is adjusted to place the bolt in unlocking position.
2. In a lock, the combination with the bolt thereof; of a spring for pressing the bolt into locking position; a key actuated bolt withdrawing member serving, in one adjustment, to place the bolt in unlocking position and, in an alternative adjustment, adjusting said spring to function; a restraining memberfor holding the bolt in withdrawn position against the force of said spring when the key actuated member is adjusted to place said spring in bolt locking adjustment; and a detent for holding the restraining member in functioning position, said detent being withdrawable from its functioning position to permit said spring to place the bolt in locking position, said restraining member being movable, when the detent is withdrawn, by said spring into holding engagement with the detent to prevent the return of the detent to functioning position, said key actuated member having restoring engagement with the restraining member when the key actuated member is adjusted to place the bolt in unlocking position.
