UNITED STATES MI/LLARD GILMORE, or OAK rank, ILLINOIS,
DOOR.
Application led December 31,1921. Serial No. 526,106.
To aZle/mmc't may concern:
Be it known that I, MILLARD GILMoRE, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to the construction of fire-doors; and the primary object is to provide a door of exceedingly staunch construction, of improvedv appearance, and capabley of being manufactured very economically.
The invention is illustrated, in its preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. l represents a fragmentary view of a building wall which is provided with a dooropening and which is equipped withl the improved door; Fig. 2, an enlarged broken horizontal sectional view taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3, an enlarged broken vertical sectional viewtaken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, an eleva tional view of thek reverseoside of the door shown in Fig. 1;.Fig. 5, an enlarged broken sectional view; and Fig. 6, a broken vertical sectonal view of the marginal binding member of the door showingthe construction 'of one of the corners. v l
In the construction illustrated, A represents a wall which is provided with a door` opening A; and B, the improved door.
v In the illustration given, the wall sshown equipped above the ydoor-opening with a track 1; and. the door is equipped with hangers 2 provided with rollers 3 which engage said track. Also, the `wall is shown equipped with stops 4 for engaging the rear vertical edge of the door, and with a stop 5 for engaging the front vertical edge portion of the door, these stops being adapted to hold the door close to the wall when the door is in a closed position.
The door vB comprises vertical plates 6 which form one side of the, door; transverse or horizont-al plates 7 which form the other sideof the door; interposed asbestos sheets 8; and a marginal binding member 9 which has inwardly extending flanges secured to said plates.
In the illustration given, the door is shown as having three of the vertical plates 6 .which arey united together by lines of rivets 6a. Also, in the illustration given, three of the cross-plates 7 are employed, these crossplates being joined together by means of horizontal rows of rivets 7 "E All of the rivets perferably extend thru the door at the junctions of the vertical and horizontal corrugations, so that the side walls of the door are thus riveted together thru the intervening asbestos 8.
Each of the vertical plates 6 is provided with outwardlyV struck vertical panels 6b which Aare oined together by relatively narrow, inwardly struck corrugations 6, which may betermed base-corrugations. Similarly, each of the cross-plates 7 is provided with outwardly struck horizontal panels 7b which are connected by inwardly struck, relatively narrow corrugations 7c.
' The marginal binding member 9 of the door is of the box form clearly shown in Fig. 3. It preferably is made by bending a piece of sheet-metal into hollow form of rectangular cross-section and extending the margins of the sheet-metal inwardly from the hollow kbody of the marginal member. The inturned flanges 9 of the marginal member 9 are connected by rivets l0 with the sheet-metal plates 6 and 7 and the interposed asbestos sheets 8. x
The box-form panel, by preference the marginal binding member 9, is provided by first forming a tubular member of rectangular cross-section, but provided with the projecting flanges on one side, such member being of great enough length to form the entire binding member of the door; then mitering the member at the proper points and bending it into the form of a rectangle conforming to the shape and size of the door. Thus, the marginal member is provided with the mitered edges 9b which may be joined together in any suitable manner, as by welding. Vhere the ends of the marginal member come together, as illustrated in Fig. 6, an angle-form connecting member l1 is employed to connect the eX- tremities, the member 11 being secured to the hollow body by means of screw-bolts 11a. If desired, the connecting member ll and the bolts lla may be employed for strengthening each of the corners of the marginal member, in lieu of the welding operation above referred to.
The construction described is exceedingly staunch and durable, is capable of being manufactured more cheaply than the better types of construction now in use, and provides large air spaces between the plates of the door. The improvedV door is. also one of Very greatly impro-ved appearance. Preferably, the flanges 921 of the marginal member 9 are located closer the front surface 9c than they are to the rear surface 9d of the marginal member; and the marginal member is projected rearwardly beyond the panels of the cross-plates 7, as clearly appears 'from Fig. 3. Thus, the marginal member is adapted to bearagainst the wall completely aroundl the door-opening when the door is in closed position. At the same time, the raised panels of the vertical; plates 6, which are. at the front side. of'` the door, are preferably substantially fiush with. the front surfaces 9c oil the marginal member. The result is that the front surface oi the door presents an. exceedingly pleasing apf. It thel racticall continuous'. but with the )leasing P Y l .s
paneled eiiect already noted.
`As appears from. Fig. 2, the. Vmarginal member 9 is provided'at the Vfront edge por,- tion of: the door with a perforation 'l2 which isadapted to receive the hook 5* ot the stop or binding member 5.
The improved construction is comparat'iively cheap, exceedinglyY strong and. du rable, and presents a pleasing. al'ipearance which has hitherto not been obtainable in lire-doors.
The improved bindingr member employed onthe door may be formed: by suitable rolh ing operations, 'followed by niitering and bending, as.v above described. lin connection witl'r the` improved binding.y member, any suitable corrugated plates may be employed,
but it `is preferred to employ corrugated plates ot the form shown. lVhP/ l'ethe door is small, a singlenlverticall plate may suiiice. Where the door is o'llarger dimensions, any suitable number of: plates may be used.
'llhe foregoingdetailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrombut the appended claims should b'e, construed as broadly as permissible, in View of the prior art.
That I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
l. A door comprising corrugated plates extending cross-wise with respect to each other, and a,marginalbinding-member coinprising an integral hollow sheet-metal body of substantially rectangular cross-section which` is. flangeless at its outer sides and which. has projecting flanges at its inner periphery, saidl binding-member being mitered: and; bent to the iiorm ot the door and said flanges being interposed between and4 riveted to said plates.
2; A door comprising a; sheet-metal boxorm bind-ing' member of' integral. crosssection andl having its margins t afjordingk flanges which. extend inwardly from the in ner peripheral wallA of the binding-member, corrugated plates which extend; crossfwise with respect trofeachl other andwhose marginsembrace said, iianges andhave the endedges of their corrugations` abutting against the inner peripherali Vall of said; 4bindingmeiulei, rivets securing said plates to, said flanges, and. rivets `connectingsaid, plates at intl-43D e-ILMQRE.
