Taps and Faucets.
Patented Aug.18,1874.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL KREISS, OF REDWOOD CITY, CALIFORNIA.l
IMPROVEMENT IN TAPS AND FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,181, dated August 18,1874; application filed June 15, 1874.
To alllfwhom it may concern:
Be it known 'that I, MICHAEL KREIss, of Redwood City, in the county of San Mateo and State of California, have invented an Improved Bung, Tap, and Faucet combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
My invention consists, first, in providing the screw-plug with a central washer to prevent leakage of fermented liquors; and, second, in the combination of the faucet with a peculiarly-constructed thimble, as will be fully described hereinafter.
Referring to the annexed drawings, Figure l is a section of the bushing side of thimble and screw-plug driven into the cask by the key, and the faucet in position; Figs. 2 and 3, end of tap; Fig. 4, a longitudinal section of the screw-thimble; Fig. 5, bushing in section and thimble; Fig. 6, plug in section. Fig. 7 represents a cap for the bung.
A represents the metal bush, which' is permanent in the cask. B is the plug. This plug is received by the bung, it being provided with threads to correspond with it, and so that it can be turned sufficiently and made to pass through into the cask by the key C at the end of the faucet, and its place supplied by the threaded thimble D. The thimble turns loosely on the end of the faucet, and is provided with a rim or collar, D', back of which is a lug, E, which strikes against a pin, G, so that the tap may always be adjusted to a vertical position. The thimble is prevented from slipg ping from the end of the faucet by a set-nut,
H, and a metal washer, H', plays between the end of it and the set-nut when the thimble is turned, and locks the connection when adjusted. The screw-plug B is divided by a leather or other packing, I, so that leakage will be prevented in case fermented liquor iscontained in the cask. A suitable cap, J, is employed, when the faucet is renewed, to keep air and impurities from the cask.
When the cask is cleaned the plug B can be easily removed from it through the spigotopening, or the bushing can be removed for the purpose.
It will be understood that in the use of my device a cask or barrel cau be tapped and none of its contents be lost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The screw-plug B, provided with a packing, I, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the faucet, having the pin G, with the adjustable screw-threaded thimble D, having the lug E, set-nut H, and washer H', as set forth. l
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
MICHAEL KREISS. IL. 5.]
