Be it known that; I, EDWARD. P. lVA LAcE, a citizen of the. United States, and a resident of lVaterbury, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to vanity boxes, and more particularly to, a, vanity case provided with a central mirror pivoted to a strap hinged to the cover and to the base. I

One object of this invention is to provide a vanity of the above nature, in which the mirror is frictionally pivoted to; the strap, whereby it will remain: in any desired adjusted, position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature in which means are provided to cause the mirror to automatically assume a central position when the Case is! opened,

A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to; manipu.- late, compact in construction, attractive in appearance, very efficient and durable;

Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding partsthroughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates the base of the vanity case, said base having a flat bottom and an upstanding rim 11. The rim 11 is reduced in diameter at its top edge 12 and is adapted to form a seat for the rim 13 of a cover 14, hinged to the base 10. I

, In order to detachably lock the cover 14' to. the base 10, the free ends of the'cover and base are provided respectively with an interlatching tongue 15, and pin 16, said tongue 15 having an eye 1&6 into which said pin 16 is adapted to fit.

The tongue 15- is; mounted on a resilient arm 17 secured to the flange 11 of the base 10, as by a rivet 18. In order to permit the tongue, 15 to be manually depressed to release the pin 16, the tongue l5v is provided with a depressible; manipulating pin 19 adapted to extend outside the rim 11 through an aperture 20-. By means of this construction, when the pin 19 is pushed in, the tongue 15 will be depressed, thereby releas. ing the pin 16 from they recess 16 in the end of the tongue. In use, the base 10 may be provided with a so-called compact or cake of face powder and also with a suitable powder pufl, not shown. The cover 14 of the vanity case mayalso have a compact similar to that in the base 10, said cover being preferably provided with a false bottom or platform 21 fitting tightly within the ri1n13. and held in place by friction. The platform 21 is provided with an elongated slot 22 in its edge so as not to interfere with the operation of the tongue 15 and the pin 16, previously mentioned.

The platform 21 is provided with two oval- shaped depressions 23 and 23, the depression 23 being adapted to receive a rouge compact, and the other depression 23,

a rouge puff. The depression 23 has a spoon-shaped portion 28 struck up from its base to form a holder for said rouge puff.

In order' to pivotally connect the cover 14 to, the base 10, a pair of hinge plates 2%- and are provided, said hinge plates being secured, as by soldering, or by lugs projecting through the cover and base to the outsides of the cover rim 13 and base rim 11 respectively. The hinge plates 2% and are provided respectively with ears 26 and 27 extending through the rims 13 and 11 and surrounding a hinge pin 28, by means of which the cover and base are hinged together. I

n single-faced mirror 29 is adapted to be located between the cover 14 and the base 10, said mirror being provided with a pair of loop portions 30 struck up from its rear face and encircling the ends of a pin 31. The central portion of the pin 31 is adapted to form a pivot bearing for a narrow strap or arm 32, said strap being clamped around said pin 31 with suiiicient tension to hold the mirror 29 by friction in any adjusted angular position with respect to the strap 32. The path described by the mirror when rotated from one extreme position to the other is shown by the dotted circle in Fig. 1-.

In order to hold the mirror 29 in central position when the vanity case is open, as

shown in Fig. at, the strap 32 has its other end 33 bent around the hinge pin 28 between the ears 26 and 27, and is provided with a lug 3% extending outside of the case. When the vanity case is in open position, said lug will be seated in recesses 35 and 36 located in the hinge plates 2st and 25 respectively, and the mirror will be positively held in central position by the edges of the rims 13 and 11 respectively.

In the modified form of vanity case disclosed in Figs. 6 and 7, the adjacent rims of the cover it and the base 10 are provided on their inner surfaces with inwardly pro-' jecting plates 37 and 38 respectively. The plates 37 and 38 have curved lugs 39 and lO, said lugs, being preferably S-shaped and having their free ends extending at an angle to each other through an aperture ll in a mirror supporting strap l2. The strap 42 in this form of the invention, has no outwardly extending lug, but is merely looped around the hinge pin 43.

In the operation of the second form of vanity case shown in Figs. 6 and 7 when the cover is rotated to open position, the lugs 39 and 40 will engage the strap 42 and centralize the mirror not shown.

lVhile there have been disclosed in this specification two forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosures but may be modified and embodied in various others forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:

1. In a vanity case, a base, a cover, a hinge for pivotally connecting said base and said cover, said base and said cover both being adapted to contain powder compacts, a strap located between the cover and base and pivoted on the hinge connecting said cover and base, and a mirror pivoted on the free end of said strap, said mirror being adapted to be swung about its pivot "for use with the compacts in either the base or the cover.

2. In a vanity case, a base and a cover both adapted to contain powder compacts, a hinge tor pivotally connecting said base and said cover, a strap located between said cover and said base and pivoted on the hinge connecting said cover and base, and a mirror frictionally pivoted on the free end of said strap, said mirror being adapted to be swung about its pivot for use with the compacts in either the base or the cover and being adapted to remain in any desired adjusted position.

3. In a vanity case, a base, a cover, a hinge for pivotally connecting said base and said cover, said base and said cover both being adapted to contain powder c0mpacts, a strap located between the cover and base and pivoted on the hinge connecting said cover and base, and a single-faced mirror pivoted on the free end of said strap, said mirror being adapted to be swung about its pivot for use with the compacts in either the base or the cover.

4:. In a vanity case, a base, a cover adapted to fit over said base, a hinge pin adapted to pivotally connect said base and cover, a mirror-supporting strap pivoted on said hinge pin and extending inwardly into said vanity case, and means for centralizing said strap when the case is opened up.

5. In a vanity case, a base, a cover adapted to fit over said base, a hinge pin adapted to pivotally connect said base and cover, a mirror-supporting strap pivoted on said hinge pin and extending inwardly into said vanity case, and means for automatically centralizing said strap when the case is opened up.

6. In a vanity case, a base,a cover adapted to fit over said base, a hinge pin adapted to pivotally connect said base and cover, a mirror-supporting strap pivoted on said hinge pin and extending inwardly into said vanity case, and means operated by the edges of said base and cover for centralizing said strap when the case is opened up.

7. In a vanity case, a pair of telescoping casing sections pivotally connected together, a pivotally mounted narrow arm located within said casing sections, and a mirror pivoted at its center on the free end.

8. 9. In a vanity case, a pair of hinged interfitted casing sections, a narrow strap located between said sections, a mirror pivotally secured to said strap on an axis spaced from the axis of the hinge of said sections whereby said mirror will be spaced from the planes of both sections.

10.111 a vanity case, a base, a cover hinged thereto, a platform located in said base, said platform having a pair of depressed oval sections, one of said depressed sections having an arm struck up therefrom for holding a powder puff, the other depressed section being adapted to receive a compact or cake of powder.

11. In a vanity case, a base, a cover hinged thereto, a platform detachably mounted in said base, said platform having a pair of depressed oval sections, one of said depressed sections having an arm struck up therefrom for holding a powder pufi, the other depressed section being adapted to receive a compact or cake of powder.

12. In a vanity case, a base, a cover hinged thereto, and a mirror-supporting pivotally-mounted narrow strap located between said base and said cover, said mirror being pivoted at its center on the free end of said strap and adapted to be rotated to face toward either said base or said cover.
