Patented June 9, 1925'.
PATENT OFFICE.
GIACOMO| CARTASSO, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
COFFIN.
Application filed September 27, 1924. Serial No. 740,284.
sealing the same prior to the disposition` thereof.
In the annexed drawing in which my 1nvention is lllustrated:
Figure l is a side elevation of my coffin.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of a slightly modified form of Collin. Figure 4 is .a fragmentary sectional view of anothcr'moditied form.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral l indicates a metal box of the usual shape, and which is preferably formed of a thin light metal, such as aluminum or copper alloy. A rim 2 is formed on the upper edge of the box 1, and a pair of grooves 3 and 4 is formed therein.
An inner transparentcover' 5 has depending edges 6 formed thereon, which lit into the groove 4, and a lip 7 is formed on the outer edge of said groove, and a cement is poured between said lip and said edge, thus sealing the box 1.
I5 An outer metallic cover 8 has depending edges 9 formed thereon, which extend into .the groove 3. A lip 10 is formed on the outer edge of the groove 3, and a suitable welding material is placed between said lip and the edge 9, thus hermetically sealing the box, or it' desired the lip 10 may be melted against the edge 9 to seal the box.
The second cover 8 is not inserted until shortly before the disposition of the cotlin, but the remains may be viewed through the transparent cover 5. In the modified "form shown in Figure 3 the grooves 3 and 4 are formed inside of the box 1.
In the modified form shown in Figure 4, the outer metal box 11 has a groove 12 50 formed in the top thereof, into which a metal cover 13 is adapted to fit. A second box 14;, preferably of transparent material, such as glass, is posititnied within the box ll, and has a groove 15 formed in the top 56 thereof into which a transparent cover ,16 is adapted to tit. Suitable packing 17 is placed between the two boxes and covers to prevent possible breakage of the inner glass box.
Having described by invention, I claim:
A Collin, comprising a metallic box, a rim secured to the upper edge of said box, said rim having a pair of grooves formed therein,
a transparent cover adapted to fit in one of said grooves, a packing in said groove, a 66 second cover adapted to extend into the second of said grooves, and a packing in said second groove.
In testimony whereof I aix m signature.
GIACOMO CA TASSO.
