c. H. ROBERTS.
Fi-re.-Plugs and Hydrants.
Patented Aug. 11, 1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. ROBERTS, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FlRE-lLUGS AND HYDRANTS.
i I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,087, dated August 11, 1874; application filed June 1, 1874.
I To all, ivhom it may concern:
permit the escape of waste water, and in guiding-the stem of one valve by that of the other, all as shown in sectional elevation in th accompanying drawing.
The casing of the fire-plug consists, in the present instance, of three flanged sections, a, b, and c, bolted together'as shown, the waterinlet d being in the lower section, and the outlet 6 in the upper section. The plate F is clamped between the sections a and b of the casing, and on the under surface of this plate, whichhas a central opening or openings for the upward passage of the water, is formed a seat, It, for the usual supplemental valve A, and on its upper surface a seat, 1', for the valve D. The said plate has also, on its upper side, "a tubular projection, E, with lateral openings 70, which constitute the above-mentioned waste outlet, a portion, 7', of the valve D encircling this tubular projection, so that when the said valve is raised from its seat it will close the openings k, and thus prevent escape of water, while when the valve D is lowered it will uncover the said openings k, and thus permit the waste water to pass ofi' from the interior of the plug through the outletfE. When the valve D or other portion of the interior of the plug need repairing, the valve'A is raised to its seat 11-, in order to turnoff the water, as indicated by dotted lines, this'adjustment being efl'ected by turninglthe screw-spindle I, which is adapted to an internal screw-thread cut in the plate F. The spindle I is turned by a key adapted to its I squared upper end, and passed down through adapted an internal thread in the above-mentioned hollow stem H, so that on turning the latter the valve can be raised or lowered, being guided by the stem 1 of the valve A. A leather or other washer, m, is interposed between a flange on the stem H and the top of the plug, to prevent leakage at the latter point, and the said stem has an enlargement,
- p, at the top, provided with wrought-metal pins, g, which permits it to be operated, in turning the water on and off, by an ordinary hose-spanner.
My improvements are applicable to streethydrants as well as to fire-plugs.
I claim as my invcntion 1. The combination, with the sectional cas- I ing of a hydrant or fire-plug, of a; plate, I confined between the sections, having seats for the valves A D, an opening, E, for the passage of waste water, and constituting the sole support of the valves, valve-rods, and their'ap'pliances, all as described.
' 2. The combination of the valve-plate F, its tubular projection and'outlet," and the valve Dhaving a tubular sleeve, j, iuclosing and slidingjon said projection, as set forth.
3. The combination of the valve I), its tubular stem l, and the valve Ahaving a stem, I, extending into and guiding the valve-stem l, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
