GUIDE VANE.
To all whom it may conccmt:
Be it known that I, PAUL J. Runs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guide Vanes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of turbine wicket gate mechanisms and especially to improvements in guide vanes. I V i Heretofore it has been customary to form these guide vanes or wicket gates of cast metal which has many disadvantages Attempts have'been madet to form these vanes of sheet or wrought metal but in order to make the vanes of sufficient strength and rigidity, the construction wasso complicated as to increase the cost and labor of man ufacture.
An important object of my'invention is to provide a device of this character which will be formed of sheet or wrought metaland 'which will be of strong construction and yet will be cheap and convenient to manufacture.
Another object of my invention is to provide a method of constructing guide vanes of this character which will be simple and inexpensive but which will produce a vane of strong and durable formation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and wherein like characters of reference designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved guide vane,
Figure 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, c
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the guide vane during its construction,
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the same,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of amodification,
Figure 6 is a side elevation thereof, and
Figure 7 is an end view of the same.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my inventlon, the numeral 5 designates the stem of the vane which is preferably formed of'round bar stock. The two plate sections 6 and 7 have their ends bevelled at 8, and the upper section 6 is bent upon itself into a substantially V-shaped formation. The lower section 7 is bent upon itself into a substantially V-shaped formation and the stem 5 is adapted to be arranged between the two sections. The inner portions ofthe bevelled ends of the two sections 6 and 7 are adapted to contact with the stem 5; The space between the inside portions of the bevelled edges is slightly less than the diameter of the stem, but a straight line AA connecting the outside edges of the plate sections will be approximately tangent to the stem, as seen in Figure l.
The straight line A-A forms, with the bevellededge of the plate section and the portion CE of the stem, an approximate triangle, there beingfourof such triangles. These spaces or triangles are filled in by autogenous welding, or fusion of metal as shown at 9. These four spaces or triangles run longitudinally along the stem. and when filled by fusion of metal, the guide vane becomes a complete unit without seams, rivets or screws. Although the drawing shows the welding asv separatefrom the plate sections T0 EUGENE" u.
and stem, this is only for purposes of illustration, and the entire structure, in reality, becomes a single unit; I
The portion CE of the stem forms with the bevelled edge 8 of the plate a suitable V for welding without any additional labor cost and the welding is on straight longitudinal lines and can be done with the automatic type of electric welder, which is rapid and eflicient. The welding has sufficient contact with the edges of the plates and with the stem surface to insure ample strength.
The plate sections are easily formed and as the stem is made from a sawed olf length of bar stock, it requires no forging or machining to adapt it to its location between the two plate sections. Itwill readily be appreciatedthat thisis a decided advantage from the point of cost over a stem which stem 14 and these bearings are arranged at The numeral 10 designates the two bearings formed from short lengths of round bar stock with holes 11 drilled through their centers for the reception of the stationary each end of the plate sections These bearings are secured to the plate sections in the same manner as the stem in the preferred embodiment of my invention, but the bevelled edges 12 of the plate sections only extend the length of the bearings. The two plate sections have their edges between the bearings, meet and these meeting'edges are alsobevelled at 13 and this seam is welded on both sides.
' The lower end of the vane is offset at 15 and a steel block 16' is secured to this end by welding in openings 17 in the plate sections. This block is provided with an opening 18 to which the actuating link 19 is secured by means of the pin 20. I
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it'is t0 be understood that various changes in shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention orthe scope of the subjoined claims. 1
Having described my invention what I claim and desireto protect: by Letters Patent is: i
1. A guide vane comprising two plate sections bent to form substantially V-shapes,
a stem arranged between the platesections and welded to the ends thereof.
2. A guide vane comprising a plate section having bevelled ec ges, said plate section being bent into substantially V-shape, a stem adapted to contact withthe bevelled edges of the plate section and welded thereto.
3. A guide vane comprising two plate sections having bevelled edges, said plate sections being bent into substantially V-shapes, a stem arranged between the plate sections and contacting with the bevelled edges of the sections, the angles formed by the bevelled edges and the surface of the stem being'filled with autogenous welding.
.4. A guide vane comprising two sheet metal sections, and a stem arranged therebetween and welded to the ends thereof.
5. A guide. vane comprising two plate sections having their edges bevelled, said plate sections being bent into substantially V-shapes, a stem arranged between the plate sections and contacting with the bevelled edges thereof, whereby a line drawn through the outer points of the" plate sections will be approximately tangent to the stem, the longitudinally extending angles formed by the bevelled'edges of the plate sections and the surface of the stem being filled with autogenous welding.
6. A guide vane comprising two plate sections bent to form substantially V-shapes, and a stem arrangedbetween the ends of the plate. sections and secured thereto.
In testimony whereof I afl ix my signature.
I PAUL J. REES.
