S. A. FITZPATRICK CHAFING SHIELD Filed July 26, 1922 Patented May 26, 1925,
UNITED. STATES SADIE A. FITZPATRICK, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
CHAFING SHIELD.
Application filed July 26, 1922. Serial No. 577,551.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, SADIE A. FITZIATRICK, a citizen of the United States, resident of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of l\Iass'achusetts, have made certain a new and useful Invention in Chafing Shields; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front view of the invention as applied.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section of the same on the line 2-2 Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of one half of the device the other half being folded thereunder.
Figure 4 is an edge view of the same. Figure 5 is a perspective view of the device.
The invention has relation to chafing shields for women, designed to be worn constantly and to protect the clothing of the wearer.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth. 7
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 1 designates one member or half of the shield, which is of general bib form, having a curved upper margin 2, approximately conforming to a vertical section of the lower part of the body or trunk taken from frontto back, the body 3 of the shield projecting downwardly for a sufficient distance to attain the desired result and preferably tapering at its lower extremity as at 4, the shield body at front and rear having upward extensions 5 and 6,
the meeting upper end portions of these extensions being joined or sewed along the lines aa and b?), and a belt loop 7, and a similar loop 8 being provided at these junctures by means of tape 9, sewed flat to the material.
A belt 10 of tape is passed around the waist of the wearer and through the loops 8 and 8 aforesaid, the strain along the extensions 5 and 6 being straight downward to the shield body, which is thereb} automatically held in its proper position to act I as a chafing shield, the upper marginal line 2 of the shield being of suitable conformation as previously stated.
The body 3 of each member or half of the shield is provided with lateral tapes 11, 00 which when tied together at 12 at the outer side of the limb will prevent the shield from moving forwardly or backwardly out of its proper position, and will serve to maintain the shield in such position that it will not be in the way of any of the usual garments. I
Each member or half of the shield is cut from a fiat piece of material and when washed may be ironed flat, which is of ad- Vantage in avoiding wrinkles which would create rather than allay friction or chafing.
The entire device or shield is intended to and may be washed and boiled for thorough cleansing, there being no rubber or other constituent in the material. of which the shield is composed that will in any way be injured thereby.
My shield may be worn outside the corset and removed by simply taking off the outer gown or dress. It may be worn during pregnancy without discomfort, and if desired the belt may be removed and the shield pinned to under garments by safety pins, in
the same manner that a sanitary cloth would be held in place.
I claim A chafing shield, consisting of two twin members arranged oppositely, each having a free curved upper edge conforming to the shape of the body at the crotch and provided with upper extensions at front and rear extending upwardly into horizontal alignment with the waist of the wearer and having direct permanent vertical seam con; nection with each other at their upper ends and provided with belt loops, said members including said extensions being each cut 'from asingle sheet of material, the main and the two members being foldable intoportions of the two members of the shield flat form for ironing purposes. 10 being free and unconnected and having a In testimony whereof I afiix my signatureventilating opening between the same along in presence of two witnesses.
their curved upper edges and extending to SA DIE A. FITZPATRICK. near the waist line of the wearer at front Witnesses: and back, said free curved upper edge be- CLARA B. SILK,
