Heretofore it has been customary to provide devices of this character with difl'erent handles or grips arranged upon the side, upon the end, or upon both the side and the end. In some instances, the side handles or grips have been made removable and in other instances the rear end handle has been made removable, all for the purpose of rendering the tool convenient in operation and manipulation. the handles, whether they be on the side or end, have been removable, separate distinct handles have been provided, resulting in a user, when using one handle having several difi'erent others lying around loose or missing, causing inconvenience and loss of time.
In electrical devices of this sort, a manually operated switch is usually provided and as a rule when aswitch of this kind is used in conjunction with a handle on the rear of a tool, it is necessary to disassemble the electrical connections for the switch, or other parts, in order to get at and remove the rear .cap of the motor to dress up the commutator or repair the brushes, resulting in a loss of time, inconvenienceand in many in-.
stances an improper re-assembly.v
This invention is designed to overcome the foregoing difliculties by providing a tool of this type with a single handle which may be readily attached to the tool in different positions, and further to arrange the coupling between the handle and the tool in a manner such that no matter in what position the handle is applied, its gripping portion is always in substantially the same handy gripping position.
nother important object of the invention is to provide a motor driven tool with a switch handle or grip, preferably of pistol type, arranged to be quickly attachable to either the end or the side of the tool and further to provide a suitable disconnectible the usual electrical connection.
In the instance where electrical connection between the handle'or grip and the tool, whereby the motor may be quickly and practically automatically properly connected to the switch in the handle without requiring the operator to make Invention also resides in the particular arrangement of these connections whereby the terminals on both the motor and the switch handle or grip are inaccessible to the hands of the operator.
With the foregoing in mind, the invention is set forth in one embodiment in the following description, drawings and claims.

In the embodiment shown, 1 represents an electrically driven motor tool of the drill type having a drill or other spindle 2 at one end and a cap 3 covering the armature and brushes, not shown, and secured to the main 'body of the tool in any suitable manner.
wardly projecting side flanges 5 providedwith threaded openings for receiving screws 6 passing through suitable openings in a connector or insulating block 7, to clamp it with the opening of the frame in fixed position. The insulating block 7 is provided upon its inner face with yielding contacts 8 secured by binding posts 9 to the block. There is a pair of these contacts and posts and they are spaced apart and are therefore insulated from each other. Each contact is provided with a cup-shaped portion 10 in alignment with an opening 10 extending through the block to the outside so that contact plugs, to be described, may pass throu h the openings and engage the contacts. T e outer face of the contact block is flush with the edge of the frame 4, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The motor casing is also provided of the motor,
upon its lateral periphery, as on the bottom, with another rectangular frame portion 11 in which is mounted a connector block corresponding to the block 7 Both of these blocks are connected in the circuit leading to the motor so that when current is led to either of these blocks, the motor is driven in the proper manner.
(Jo-operating with either of these sets of contacts and with casing is the handle and switch mechanism which comprises a frame in the form of a closed loop generally indicated by the reference character 12 and provided with a substantially vertical hollow gripping portion 13 merging into a cable receiving clamping device 14, which is of any preferred construction arranged to receive and hold the cable containing the leads for supplying current to the device. Within the vertical portion 13 and on the inside of the loop is a switch 15 of any suitable construction having a control trigger 16 of the spring type so that when it is outward it breaks the circuit but when it is moved or gripped inward, by the operator, itcloses the circuit. One of the incoming lines 17 leads to this switch, while the other line 18 leads to two connector blocks similar to the block 7, one of said blocks being arranged in an upper rectangular frame 19 extending horizontally on the top of the handle or grip and another arranged in a rectangular frame 20 vertically disposed on th front side and opposite to the vertical grip portion 13. These connector blocks are secured in the handle in a manner similar to that utilized for holding the connector 'block 7 in the motor. Another lead 21 connects the switch 15 with both of these connector blocks in the handle or grip. The frames 19 and 20 are rectangular and conform to the corresponding parts of the motor and the handle is held in place by screws 22 passing from the outside through the connector blocks and into threaded openings in the flanges 5.
Since the connectors or blocks on the casing and handle are alike and their contacts are protected or not exposed to the hands of the operator, it is necessary toprovide some intermediate connection or adapting means, and this is accomplished by the use of an adapter block 23, shown ,in Figs. 7 and 8. This adapter block isof any suitable insulating material such as bakelite, and has embedded in it connector plugs 24, each provided with a flange 25 for prevent'ng dislacement of the plug. These lu project rom both faces of the adapter 100 and are of sufficient length so that. on the one hand one pair of plugs on one side of the block will make contact with the yielding contacts and on the other hand, the opposite pair will make contact with the yieldmg contacts of the grip or handle.

If the user desires to have the handle upon the rear of the drill he a plies the adapter block to the drill or the andle, inserts the exposed plugs of the adapter block in the openings of the corresponding contact block of the motor and clamps the parts in place by the use of the screws 22. If he should then desire to have the handle in the other remainingposition, he removes the screws and follows the same procedure placing the handle in the desired position, the universal character of the connectors and adapter permitting such change.
Having described my invention, I claim r 1. In combination, a motor driven tool including tool and handle members at least one of said members being rovided with means permitting ready attac ment of said handle in a plurality of locations on the tool.

A hand tool comprising a casing, a tool operating part carried thereby, motor means carried by said casing, handle or grip and controlling means therefor, and means for connecting the handle or grip to the tool in various locations on the tool and maintaining control of the motor means through said controller.

In a motor tool, a casing, motor means mounted therein, a plurality of controls for said motor means arranged in different positions with respect to said casing, a combined handle and operator operated controller adapted to be associated with any of said and means for securing said combined handle and controller in place.

A motor driven tool, a casing, an electric motor therein, a connector carried by said casing and having engageable contacts connected to the motor, a handle having a supply cable connected thereto, and adapted to be removably secured to the casing, and separate plugging means between the connector of the casing and the handle for establishing electrical connections therebetween.-
10. A motor driven tool, a casing, an electric motor therein, a connector carried by said casing and having engageable contacts connected to the motor, a handle having a supply cable connected thereto, and adapted to be removably secured to the casing, and a, separate plug connection for establishing electrical connections therebetween.
11. A motor driven tool, a casing, an electric motor therein, a plurality of connectors arranged in different positions on the casing and all electrically connected to saidmotor,
protected contacts carried thereby, a handle and supply cable structure havmg a connector carried thereby, said handle being removably secured to the casing, and means for establishing electrical connections between the cable and the handle and the protected contacts of the connector.
