IMPROVEMENT IN TOY GUNS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,689, datcd August 4, 1874 application filed January 16, 1874.

To all whom tt may concern Beit known that I, AUGUST STEINBK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Toy Gun and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan ying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a longitudinal section of this invention when the gun is cocked. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same when it is discharged. .f

This invention consists in the arrangement of a sleeve which fits on the stock of a toy gun, and to which is secured a wire, the inner end of which projects in the line of the axis of the barrel, and carries a compressing-disk and a spring, while its outer end is bent downward to form a finger-piece, said sleeve being provided with a slot to catch over a nose formed by a-wire spring which forms the trigger, and is secured in the butt of the gun in such a manner that when the sleeve is forced back it is retained by the nose of the trigger-spring, and the mainspring of the sleeve is compressed, and by bearing on the trigger the sleeve is released and a pea or other article placed in the barrel is thrown out with considerable force. 0n the sleeve is secured a nipple for the reception of a percussionicap, and if the sleeve is driven forward this nipple strikes a projection formed on the inner end of the barrel, and the cap is exploded.

-In the drawing, the letter A designates a barrel, which is secured on the end of a stock, B, both the barrel and the stock being made of tinned sheet-iron, or other cheap material. On the stock B is tted a sleeve, C, to which is secured a wire, D, the inner end of which extends in a line with the axis of the barrel and carries a disk, a, which bears on a spring,

b, that rests upon the inner end c of the barrel A. The outer end of the wire D forms a finger-piece, d, that serves to force back the sleeve against the action of its spring b. In the butt E of the gun is secured a wire spring, F, which forms the trigger, and which is provided with a nose, e, that catches in a slot, f,

in the sleeve C, whenever this sleeve is forced back far enough for this purpose. By forcing back the sleeve the spring B is compressed, and if a pea or other article of a similar nature is placed into the barrel, and the sleeve C is released by forcing back the trigger E, the pea or other article is thrown out with great violence. On the sleeve is secured a nipple, g, for the reception of apercussion-cap, and from the barrel extends an abutment, h, which is provided with side lianges, so that when the sleeve is driven forward by the action of its spring b the percussion-cap will strike the abutment and explode, and by the side flanges of the abutment the fragments of the percussion-cap are prevented from producing injury.

By these means an exceedingly cheap and simple toy gun is produced, which can be manufactured with little trouble, and which is not liable to get out of order.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. 1n a toy gun, the sleeve C, wire D, disk a, and spring b, in combination with the barrel A and trigger F, formed of wire and provided with a nose to retain the sleeve C, all constructed to operate substantially as shown and described.

2. The abutment h and nipple g, in combination with the sleeve C, wire D, barrel A,

and trigger F, arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
