IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-PROOF SKYLIGHTS.

To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, MOSES T. WILLIAMS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Burglar Proof Skylight and Scuttle, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to the construction of skylights and scuttles for the roofs of buildings; and consists of a burglar-proof shield, and in the construction of and manner of operating the roof or hatch of the skylight and the side windows thereof.

This skylight and scuttle is designed to allow of access to the roof, and to afford a free passage for the entrance and discharge of currents of air for Ventilating purposes. The skylight is of oblong form, made of either metal or wood, and placed so as to cover the opening in the roof. The opening is protected by the burglar-proof grating A, which gratingis formed of bars or rods of iron, B, attached to the frame G, which rods are xed or immovable for covering, say, one -half o1" the opening. The other half is covered in a similar manner, but the bars B are attached to a sliding frame, D, which when closed, as seen in the drawing', is secured by a hook at the point E, as indicated by the hasp and staple. F represents the windows on the sides of the skylight. These windows are hung on pivots in their side edges, which allow them to swing to a horizontal position. Gis a weight on the bottom or lower side, and H is a spring-catch on the top. I is a 'cord attached to the knob J of the catch. By means of the weight Gr, the window is self-closing, while it is opened by means of the single cord I. K is the hatch or cover of the skylight. This hatch is mounted on rollers and traverses back and forth over the stationary part L of the roof as it is opened, and for purposes of ventilation. The hatch is operated by 'means of the'two cords my and fn. These cords are attached to the ends of the hatch, and pass over the double pulley O, and extend down through the grated scuttle into the'apartment below. By pulling the cord 'm the hatch is opened, and by pulling the cord n it is closed. The window-cords also extend down into the apartment below, so that one or more may be opened by night or day for purposes of ventilation. The opening in the root' may therefore be left open at all times and protected from burglars when the windows are open as well as when they are closed, and at night as well as by day.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In combination with a combined scuttle and skylight, the burglar-proof grating A, substantially as shown and described.

2. In combination with the windows of a combined burglarproof skylight and scuttle, the weight G, which allows the windows to be operated by a single cord, as shown and described.

3. The combination, with the sliding hatch or roof-covering K, of the cords m and n, for operating the same, as shown and described.

4. A combined burglar-proof skylight and scuttle,having side windows and hatch, which are opened and closed by means of cords eX- tending into the apartment beneath, as shown and described.
