l MEASURING AND FILLING DEVICE.
y Application fried oetober 15 192s. serrer No. cessez.
To all whom it concern."
, Be it known that I, EDWARD L. STAHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of ndiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring and Filling Devices,` of which the following is` a specification.,
My "nvention relates to improvements in measuring and lillingdevices and; particularly that type which is adapted to be used in ice cream dispensing.
An important object of this invention is to provide a device which will quickly measure and transfer commonly used quantities of .ice cream, such as pints and quarts without waste. Y
A further object of the invention is the provision of a dispensing device which will quickly and conveniently fill the cylindrical containers very commonly used.
A further object of the invention is to provide a measuring and filling device which is simple and durable of construction and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figurel is a top plan view,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the device, and
Figure 4; is a horizontal section taken on line 4 4 of Figure 2. i
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1() designates a cylindrical shell forming the body of the device, the lower portion thereof being open as at 11, while the upper portion 12 is closed with the exception of an aperture to permit movement of a plunger rod therein, and a plurality of openings 13 to permit the exhaust of air therefrom. At the lower portion of the shell 10, a wire 14 is tightly drawn diametrically across the shell `and riveted or otherwise secured to the shell as at 15.
In order to force the merchandise from within the shell 10, a plunger 16 is movtwo or three complete revolutions, permitand like merchandise.
ahly fitted therein and lprovided with a packing ring 17 which insures a tighter connection and prevents the passageI of matter` between the plunger head and the shell'. Theplunger4 head 16 is provided also 60 with a plurality ofl apertures 18 which permit the escape of air upon filling the cylindrical shell. i They plunger head' 1.6'r is actuated byV a plunger rod 19which' is preferably formed integral with the plunger head and has a vertical boreI drilled therein to permit a cutter* rod 20- to pass througl'r same in order to rotate the cutter` blade 21. The upper portion of the plunger rod 19 is threadedly connected to a gripping handle 22 which carries a collar 23 which rotates on ball bearings 24. A hand wheel 25 is ,secured to the cutter rod 2O by a nut 26,
said hand wheel resting upon the collar 23 and revolving upon the ball bearings 24. To permit adjustment of the plunger head within the shell, a plurality of notches 27 are formed in the plunger rod 19 and adapted to engage a sliding bolt 28 which slides in the latch member 29.
In operation, the devicel when used for dispensing ice cream forwhich it is particularly adapted, is regulated by inserting the sliding` bolt 28 into the proper notch according as to whether a pint or quart of the cream is to be measured. The next operation is to force the device downwardly into a can of cream until the shell has been filled, the entire device then being turned ting the wire 14 to cut the cream within the shell and permit same to be separated from the general mass in the can. The device is then withdrawn from the can of ice cream and positioned over the container, said containers usually being cylindrical in form. The ice cream is then forced from the shell by releasing the sliding bolt 28 and forcing the plunger head 16 downwardly by means of the plunger rod 19 and handle 22.
It is obvious that this method of` dispensing creamV will create a great saving in time and labor and meet the increasing demands for hygienic methods of dispensing crea shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. A dispensing device of the character described, comprising a cylindrical shell, a plunger movably mounted Within said shell, a rod secured to said plunger, a knife blade positioned beneath said plunger, a second rod connected to said knife blade, a hand Wheel attached to said second mentioned rod for revolving said knife blade, and a handle attached to said rst mentioned rod for reciprocating said plunger in said shell, said handle and hand Wheel being so arranged that the fingers of the operators hand that grips said handle may be used to rotate said hand Wheel.
2. A dispensing device of the character described, comprising a cylindrical shell, a
plunger head movably mounted Within said shell, a tubular rod secured to the head, a knife blade positioned beneath the plunger head, a second rod positioned in said tubular rod and connected to the knife blade, a hand Wheel attached tosaid second mentioned rod for revolving the knife blade, and a loop shaped handle arranged about said hand wheel and attached to said tubular rod for reciprocating the plunger head in the shell, said loop shaped handle being so arranged about said hand Wheel that the fingers of the operators hand that grips said loop shaped handle may be used for rotating said hand Wheel.
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
EDWARD L. STAHLEY. Witnesses C. IV. Pans'r, JNO. C. PEGLoW.
