Description

1. MGGQVERAN.
' Car'ding-Mac'hines.
Patented July 28,1874.
v 12in/e UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PATRICK VJ. MCGOVERAN, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARDING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,446, dated July 2S, 1874; application led June l0, 1874.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK J. MCGOV- ERAN, of Lawrence, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have/made a new and useful Invention havin g reference to Carding-Engines; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure lis a top View, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, ofthe deliveryrollers and bracket of a carding-engine with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a top view of the bracket and the rollers. j Fig. 4 is a section of the bracket, taken through one of the journals of the front roller.
My invention consists, rst, in the combination of a hollow and perforated dome with the bracket and its delivcryrolls, such dome be- .ing to extend over the two rollers, and to be hinged to the bracket or a plate introduced into or applicd'thereto; second, in the front delivery-roll having its journals resting on inclined planes to keep it pressed toward the rear roll.
In such drawings, A denotes an arm or bracket, which is to extend from the middle of the front end of the frame of a carding-engine, and to support and carry the two deliv-` ery-rolls B and C, between which the fleece is to be received from the doifer.
Generally there is arranged over and near the bite of such rolls a trumpet or guide to receive the ileece or sheet of carded cotton and guide it between the rolls.
The domeD perforated at its crown, as shown at a, and extended over the two rolls, and hinged at the front edge of its base to the bracket or a plate, b, inserted therein, the hin ge being shown at c, not only serves the purpose ofthe trnmpet,(the fleece passing downthrough the hole a,) but to cover the rolls, so as to prevent dnst and extraneous matters discharged from the carding-engine from collecting upon the rollers, or getting' into the oiling-holes h h of the bearings of the shaft of the rear roll. Furthermore, should the sliver become caught by and wound upon the backroll, the front roll will be forced upward ou its inclined planes d d, and as the sliver may accumulate on the back roll, it will crowd or force upward the dome, and thus warn the attendant that the sliver-is not being perfectly delivered.
The bracket beneath the dome has two angular recessses, E E, arranged in it, as shown, to receive the journals-j j of the front roll. Each recess has its bottominclined in opposite directions, as shown atfd g, the two front inclined planes el d serving tojkeep the roller up to the sliver as well as to allow such rollei` to rise during accumulation of the sliver upon the back roller. F is the shaft of the rear roll or roller, and G the operative gear thereof.
I claiml. The combination of the perforated or sliver-guiding dome D with the carding-engine bracket A and its delivery-rolls B C, all being arranged substantially as set forth. 4
2. The delivery-rolls B C, combined with the bracket A, having the inclined planes d d, for supporting the journals of the front roll C, all as explained.
PATRICK J. MCGOVERAN.
