ADVERTISING DEVICE.

-to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to'advertising devices and particularly to signs adapted to be secured to the hood of motor vehicles.

The invention contemplates the provision of a panel having a longitudinal groove at its lower edge to receive the hinge of the hood so that sidewise movement of the panel will be eliminated, the panel being fastened to the hood by suitable tying devices. The construction of the invention will be clearly understood by references to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. l is a perspective view of a motor vehicle hood having a panel and a sign secured to the hood. 1

Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 designates the hood which is provided with a hinge 2 having a groove member 3 which fits snugly over the hinge 2 so as to lie over the hood with the spread side edges 4 and 5 bearing upon the upper surface of the hood. The upright panel 6 is carried by the grooved member 3. In Figures 1 and 2 I have shown the panel made of sheet metal bent intermediate at its ends 7 and having two side walls or faces 8 and 9 the lower edges of which are curved back upon themselves at 10 and 11 to rest on the groove member 3 to which they may be secured in any suitable manner. The panel is provided with slots 12 and 13 through which a tying device extends. The

tying device is shown as comprising a strap 14 the ends of which are provided with buckles as at 15 and 16 to provide loops 17 and 18 which receive the handles 19 and 20 the supporting member having a of the hood so that when the hood is secured by the fastening devices or clamps 21 or 22 (there being clamps on both sides of the hood) the sign will be held firmly on the hood. The sign may contain suitable indicants as shown at 23. It will be apparent that the sign will be easily removed or applied when occasion demands and that the hood sides may be raised to permit access to the engine without unfastening the strap.

In Figure 3 I have shown a slightly modified form of panel embodying the same generic idea however as is shown in Figures 1 and 2. In the form shown in Figure 3 the single ply panel 24 is received in the upper groove 25 of a grooved member 26 which has a longitudinal groove '27 to receive the hinge 2. The groove member has side edges 28 and 29 which bear upon the hood in a manner like the side edges 4 and 5 of the groove member 3.-

The sign is held upon the hood by the tying devices consisting of the cords or cables 30 and 31 which pass through the openings 32 and 33 in the grooved member 26. 31 may be tied to the clamps 34 and 35, it being understood of course that there are two sets of clamps, one set on each side of the hood, therefore the sign shown in Figure 3 will be effectively secured to the hood very much in the same manner as the sign shown in Figures 1 and 2. My invention contemplates modifications of the same generic idea so I do not wish tobe limited to the particular forms shown in the drawings but reserve the right to make such changes in 'form, proportion and mmor details of construction as properly come within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A sign comprising a panel, a grooved member receiving the lower end of the panel, the groove in the member being adapted to receive the hinge of the hood of a motor vehicle to prevent sidewise movement of the sign, means for fastening the sign to the hood, said means comprising a tying member passing through the sign and secured to the lower edges of each side of the hood.
