GARMENT.

To all 'whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED E. FRANK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garments and more particularly to washable dresses and the like, and has for one of its objects to provide garinents of this kind with means whereby buttons or other fastening devices may be easily removed from them, Prior to laundering, so that they will not be subjeeted to breakage, or, if made of metal,

will not impart rust spots or other discoloration to the garment.

Another object is to provide means for detaching or attaching these fastening devices which connect each individual device and which means are simple in construction, achieving their Purpose easily and quickly.

Other objects will be more fully described in the following specification and will be apparent in the accompanying drawings il-` lustrating a Preferred form of the invention and in which,

Like characters of reference denote Similar parts throughout the several views and the following specification.

10 is a dress, a body Portion 11, sleeves 12, and a shawl collar 13. Dress 10 has a slit 14 extending downwardly in front from collar 13- to, preferably, knee length,

- at 15 forming a Plaeket. This slit is covered by a panel 16, extending downwardly the full length of the dress, having open flaps 'or box plaits 17 and 18, at both sides. The side of the panel with flaP 18 Projects over and beyond the slit 14, and has an upper end 19 below the collar 13. A Part 20 of the front of the dress, forming its edge and being directly fiap 18, is provided with button holes 21, equidistant from each other. 22 are button holes, registcring with holes 21, through a part 23 of the dress 10, lying directly underneath part 20 of the outer portion of the dress and being covered by it.

24 is a narrow tape of cloth or other suitable material having sewed thereon a number of buttons 25, by means of threads 20. These buttons 25 are equidistant from each other and from ends 27 of taPe 24, leaving equal spaces 28 between each other and equal spaces 29 between them and the ends 27.

The application and use of the tape 24 is obvious. The buttons 25 are inserted through button holes 22 into the part 23 of the dress 10. To close thefront of the dress, the buttons 25 are then inserted through the holes 21 into the front part 20 of the dress, below flap 18. This completely closes the dress and covcrs the slit 14, the fiap 18 in turn covering the buttons 25, and, in combination with fiap 17, imparts to the front of the dress a neat and symmetrical appearance.

In Practice this invention is applied Particularly to washable dresses. The tape 24 with buttons 25 is easily applied. Before laundering, the tape is quickly removed and breakage of buttons 25 Prevented. If buttons are made of metal, or of material which is colored, their removal eliminates discoloration of the dress due to rust or the like, while undergoing laimdering processes. The tape 24 is customarily made of washable material, so that the same may be cleaned independently of the dress, if so desired.

Attention is particularly called to the fact that the distances between the buttons on the tape are equal and also that the distances between them and the ends of the tape are equal, whcreby the tape is reversible lengthwise and can easily be attached to the dress without matching particular buttons With particular button holes.

While I have shown and deseribed in the foregoing specification a Preferred form of the invention, it is understood that the 10 same is susceptible to various modifications; so, for instance, while illustrated in connection with buttons sewed on a tape, any other form of fastening device may be used thereon, such as hooks, for example, engaging cloth eyes in the dress; or metal eyes may be fastened to a similar tape inserted between flap 18 and part 20, and connection between the hooks and eyes effeeted through holes 21 and 22, allowing removal of both 1W hooks and eyes. Furthermore, the attaching of the tape to the front of the dress is only one of its many mods of application, insomuch as the same prineiple oan be applied to any other part of the dress, and also to euffs, belts, and the like. It is therefore obvious that various changes of form, propoI'tion and minor details may be resorted to Without departing or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.

What I elaim as new, is:

In a garment, a longitudinally disposed placket formed by overlapping inner and outer portions, each having a series of equidistant button holes in register With each other, the said outer portion being provided with an extension at its top having one of the said button holes located therein, a

fabrie tape having buttons securely fastened thereto, equidistant from each other, the said tape being secured to the garlnent by insertion of its buttons through the series of button holes in the inner portion of the said placket and having its buttons cooperating With the button holes in the outer portion of the said plackct for the purpose of closing the same, one of the said buttons Cooperating with the button hole in the extension of the outer portion and its registering button hole in the inner portion, and -a flap at the outside of the garment covering the said buttons.
