To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, rimmer A. SCI-HEIGH- nn, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bolt Snaps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact deseription.

The present invention relates broadly to bolt snaps, and more particularlyto bolt snaps having an open eye at one end for engagement with a chain or similar device.

Open eye snaps are used mainly in connection with chains and are constructed with the open eye in order to enable easy assembly of the snaps with the chains either by the chain manufacturer or by the farmer or other user. Breakages in closing the eye are frequent and costly and prejudicial to the interests of snap manufacturers. in order to close the eye without danger of break age, the operation shouldbe carried out by a series of coaxing taps or blows directed against the end of the eye forming member, and the farther away from this point the blows are actually directed, the greater the likelihood of breakage. In actual practice, however, particularly in the factories, where the workmen are paid on a piece-work basis, the usual Way is to hit the eye forming member a hard belt with the hope of smashing it closed with the fewest possible number of blows, the blows not being aimed at any particular point on the eye forming member or with reference to the coaxing or gently leading of the iron into the proper position. Striking the eye forming member in the proper place is a vital thing and, if the workman can be influenced to strike in such place, namely, on the end of the eye forming member, the likelihood of breakage in closing the eye will be very substantially reduced. 1

One feature of the present invention resides in adding a striking knob on the end of the eye forming member which will unconsciously guide the hammer of the person closing the eye to strike the eye at that point. Another feature of the invent-ion resides in providing for the free end of the eye forming member adjacent the juncture thereof with the barrel portion of the snap with a raised portion forming a seat to receive the end of the eye forming member. with the striking knob will not only instinctively cause the workman to direct his blows against the end of the eye forming member but will substantially eliminate danger of the member being banged down inside the end of the barrel, thereby making the eye too small for the chain.

A preferred embodimentof the invention isillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a. side elevation of a snap embodying my invention before the eye is closed;

Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the eye closed; and

Figure 3 is a plan view of the snap as shown in Figure 2.

Referring to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, 2 indicates the barrel of thesnap having the usual hook portion 3 at one end provided with a eo-operative slidable spring-actuated plunger 4: adapted to be retracted by means of a thumb-piece 5.

Integrally connected to the other end of the barrel is the eye forming member 6, the snap being manufactured with the eye open, as illustrated in Figure 1, to facilitate assembling the snap with a chain. On the extreme end of the eye forming member, I

form a raised portion 7, thereby providing 3 the striking knob aforementioned, and on the portion of the eye forming member adjacent the point Where it merges with the barrel 2, 1 form a raised portion 8 providing a concave seat 9 to: receive the rounded free end of the eye forming member. This seat is formed .on the eye forming member itself beyond the adjacent end of the barrel.

The advantages of my invention will at once be apparent. Without the striking knob on the extreme end of the eye forming member, a person, in attempting to close the eye, would not be apt to strike the extreme end of the member because of the tendency of the hammer to slip off of such extreme end. Such person would naturally strike the eye forming member at a point some distance from the extreme end thereof. The presence of the striking knob on the extreme end of the eye forming member will unconsciously guide the hammer of the person closing the eye to strike such knob. Moreover, this striking knob presents a shoulder which enables a workman to aim his blows in such a manner as to draw the end of the eye forming member toward its seat, thus avoiding any tendency to hammer the end of the eye forming member down inside the adjacentend of the barrel. Fur thermore, this last-mentioned danger is practically eliminated by the'presence of the seat 9 provided by the raised portion 8.

While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction shown without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended clain s. further understood that the word knob as used in the specification and claims is used in the broad sense to cover any raised striking surface or projection on the end of the eye.

I claim:

1. A snap comprising a body having an eye It will be forming member integral at one end with the body, the free end of said member hav ing a raised portion on its extreme end extending above the surface of the body of the member in all positions of the same and providing a striking knob for closing the eye substantially as described.

2. A bolt snap, comprising a. barrel having an open eye forming member integral with one end thereof, said eye forming member having a raised portion on the upper side of its extreme end providing a striking knob and having a raised portion thereon adjacent its point of juncture with the barrel providing a concave seatdor the extreme 3 end of the eye, substantially as described.

It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 1,533,812, granted April 14, 1925 upon the application of \Villiain A. Schleicher, of Cleveland, Ohio, for an improvement in Bolt Snaps, an error appears in the printed specification requiring correction as follows: Page 2, line 36, claim 2, after the Word eye sert the Words foaming men 1607; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice.
