Description
April 1 4, l1925. C. W. HUTCZHINS y MONUMENT Filed March 13, 1923 .....nllllmmm @trouw Patented Apr. 14, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
vCYR/US W. HUTCHINS, OF KEARNEY, NEBRASKA.
MONUMENT.
Application filed March 13, 1923. Serial No. 624,813.
To all Viii/zam #may concern.:
Be it known that l, CYRUS W7. HU'rc-HrNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ot Kearney, in the county of Buffalo and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monuments; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others lrslilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in monuments, particularly to such as are adapted for use in cemeteries, one object of lthe invention being to so construct a monument that it may be made principally of metal and so that it may be utilized as a receptacle for growing flowers, or as a monument without flowers.
'lilith this and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features Y of construction and combinations of paris as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims; Y
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure 1 is a View in perspective showing the principal parts of the monument separated.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line Q-Z of Figure 3, and
Figure 3 is a sectional View on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
The body portion and its base 2 are preferably made of metal sheets not liable to rust. The base 2 is secured to the lower end of the body portion and is preferably.
made flaring and mounted upon a suitable foundation 3 of stone or other material.
The body portion comprises front and rear plates L1-,5 and end plates 6-6,-the latter having flanged vertical edge portions 7 which are secured by welding or in any other suitable manner to the front and back plates. The front plate l is made with an opening 8 Vand at respective ends of this opening, the metal of the sheet is bent inwardly and laterally to form flanges 9-10 disposed at right angles to each other. The metal at the lower edge portion of the openino ing 8 is bent inwardly to form a flange 11 and from an intermediate portion of this flange, a shorter flange l2 projects upwardly.V The rear plate 5 and the end plates 6 are constructed in the same manner and the laterally projecting flanges 10 at respec tive ends of each opening are connected by a plate 13. In this manner the front, baci: and end plates of the body is provided with pockets 14 open at their upper ends. Into these pockets, slabs 15 which may contain siutable inscriptions, are inserted, said slabs being supported upon the inwardly project-- ing flanges 11 at the lower edges of the openings and these flanges may be provided with holes 16 to receive dowel pins 17 depending from the lower edges of the slabs.
A receptacle 18 is inserted into the metal body frame and provided at its upper edges with lateral flanges 19 to overlie the upper end of the body and thus said receptacle is supported within the body. This receptacle may be constructed of metal.
A plurality of flower pots 2O (two being shown in the drawing) also made of metal are located in the upper portion of the rcccptacle and supported by means of lateral flanges 21 resting upon the flanges 19 of the receptacle, as clearly shown in Figure 3.
Should it not be desired to use the flower pots as such but give to the structure, the appearance of a monument only, an ornamental cover 22 may be placed over the flower pots, as shown in Figure 3.
The receptacle 18 may contain water and tubes 28 may be made to communicate with holes in the bottoms of the pots 20, said tubes containing absorbent material, such as moss, which lwill cause water to be supplied by capillary attraction from the receptacle to the flower pots. A valved drain pipe 24: may also be provided for the receptacle 18.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A monument having a body portion comprising a plurality ot' metal plates secured together and each constructed with an open-top pocket, slabs supported in the pockets, and an ornamental cover extending over the tops of the pockets and constituting a removable top for the monument.
2. A monument having a body consisting of side and end plates secured together and each having an opening therethrough, flanges projecting inwardly from the bot tom and side walls of the openings and having terminal port-'ions directed over the speeeaton in the presence of two subopenings, plates connecting the flanges at sel'bng Witnesses.
the sides of the openings whereby to form open-top pockets, slabs fitted in said pockets, CYRUS 7. HUTCHNS.
.5 and means to extend over the sabs and close Vtnesses:
the top of the monument. JOHN N. DRYDEN, In testlmonywhereof, I have slgned thls FLORENCE MILLER.
