FIREBACK OF FIREPLACES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,331, dated July 15, 1856.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, S. M. EoHoLs, of Lafayette, in the county of Chambers and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Fireback for Chimneys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a face view of the fire back and Fig. 2 is a section on line 00 00.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same part.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of an additional back piece in the fire place, swelling toward the front, similar to two logs placed one upon the other in the back of the fire place; for the purpose of throwing out heat and economizing fuel. 7
In the drawing, F is the fire place with its ordinary inclined back a. In front of this secured by the keys 6 is a cast iron back in form similar to that shown in Fig. 2, and resembling two logs placed one upon the other.

I disclaim hot air chambers in fire places; and soap stone and sand blocks in the back of the chimney as claimed by Sarah Hammond in her patent of 1839, such constituting no part of my invention; But

The arrangement in the chimney before the back plate a, of the removable double cylinder and plane, fire back B, as, and for the purposes hereinafter set forth.
