Be it known that I, ELMER N. JOHA, av citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, :Q and State of Wisconsin, have invented cerftain new and useful Improvements in .Knitted Caps; and I do hereby declare that .thel'following is a full, clear, and exact de- -fscription thereof. f [This invention relates to knitted caps and l 1 to a method of making knitted parts.

' 1 l This invention is an improvement over that disclosed in the United States Letters y Patent for knitted caps and methods of making same granted to me October 18, 1921, and bearing Serial Number 1,394,093, and has the same general objects as those enumerated therein.

Further objects are to provide a knitted cap in which an encircling band having normally folded slanting portions is provided with ear flaps joined thereto, in which the ear flaps have rounded or tapered ends provided with selvedges forming continuations of the selvedges of the body of the flaps, and in which the slanting folded portions are normally covered by the aps.

Further objects are to provide a method of forming knitted flaps with rounded or tapered ends having inherently finished edges, and to provide a method of forming knitted bands by straight knitting and subsequent fashioning whereby the tapered or rounded ends have selvedges forming continuations of the selvedges of the body portion.

An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which:-

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cap as it appears when the ear flaps are turned upwardly.

Figure 2 is a corresponding view with the ear flaps turned down.

Figure 3 is a detail of one of the ear flaps in one stage of construction.

The cap comprises a knitted crown portion ljprovided with buttons or other secure means 2 upon opposite sides thereof. A knitted band is provided and is partly slipped over the lower edge ofthe crown, as shown in Figure 2, and is secured there to by a line of stitching or other suitable means 3. by rack knit portions 6. It is attached to the lower ege of the crown by the line of stitching 3 referred to above, and it will be noted that such line of stitching joins the crown to the lower edge of the portion 4, diagonally traverses the rack knit portion 6, and joins the upper edge of the portion 5 when in the position shown in Figure 2. The ear flaps have their body portions 7 attached to the rack knit portion, as illustrated in Figure 2 and are adapted to be folded upwardly when the portion 5 is so folded and to cover the V-shaped opening where the rack knit portion is diagonally folded, as in Figure 1.

It will be seen that a finished margin or selvedge is provided for the band portion and that the raw diagonal edge 8 of the body portion 7 of the ear flaps are stitched to the slanting marginal edge of the rack knit portions.`

In forming the ear flaps, the body portion is knit as an elongated member provided with selvedges 9 along its margins. A V-shaped dart is cut out of the end of vthe body portion and provides triangular projections 10 and 11 which have selvedged outer edges forming a continuation of the selvedged margins of the body portion and also have diagonal or slanting opposed edges 12. These last edges 12 are drawn together and are secured by stitching or other suitable means 13, as may be seen from Figures 1 and 2, thus providing a tapered or 'rounded outer end for the ear flaps which is provided with selvedged margins forming a continuation of the selvedged margins of the body portion of the flaps. If desired, the stitching 13 may be omitted along an intermediate portion of the margins 12 and such edges may be otherwise finished to provide button holes 14.

It will be seen, therefore, that a knitted cap has been provided which is convertible and may be worn as an ordinary simple type of cap with an attractive ornamentation or may be worn as a cap provided with downwardly extending portions" adapted to be positioned over the ears of the wearer and secured beneath the chin in any suitable manner.

It will further be seen that throughout the extent of the encircling bands and ear aps, the selvedges are provided on all of the exposed margins and consequently the cumbersome or unsightly finishing of these edges, such as that employed for cut edges is not necessary.

It will be seen, therefore, that a cap of effective character for affording the necessary adaptability and of a pleasing appearanc and of neat and attractive design has been provided.

It will further be seen that an extremely simple and cheap method of forming knitted iiaps with tapered or rounded ends having selvedged margins has been provided.

Although one form of the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.

I claim:

1. A cap comprising a crown, a continuous knitted band entirely encircling the lowerportion thereof and having straight portions joined by rack knitted portions, and knitted ear flaps joined along diagonal lines to said rack knitted portions and having rounded selvedged outer end.

2. A knitted cap comprising a crown portion, a continuous band entirely encircling the lower portion of the said crown, said band comprising two straight knit portions joined by two rack knit portions located adjacent the side portions of the crown and normally folded transversely to place the straight knit portions in substantial alignment with each oth'er, and ear flaps attached to one margin of the said rack knit portion and normally projecting upwardly, whereby the resulting diagonal edges are normally hidden.

3. A cap com rising a crown portion, a continuous ban entlrely encircling said crown and mmprising two stra ht portions relatively o set and joined y slanting portions, means securing opposite sides of said straight portions adjacent the lower edge of the crown, and ear flaps secured to said slanting portions.

4. The method of making a knitted flap comprising knitting an elongated body 0rtion with marginal selvedges, cutting a dart out of one end to form two triangular extensions integral with the body portion and each provided with a selvedge forming a continuation of one. of the marginal selvedges, drawing the opposed edges of said extensions together, and joining such edges.
