ASH-TRAY HOLDER.

Be it known that I, FREDRICK T. SMITH. a citizen of the United States. residing at Somerset. inthe county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented-new and useful Improvements in AshTra v Holders, of which .the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ash tray devices and has for its object the provision of a novel ash tray, or holder therefor, so constructed and designed as to be used upon the arm of a rocking chair, the arrange ment being such that the ash tray carried by the holder will remain always in upright or proper position regardless of how violently the chair may be rocked so that spilling of the ashes will be prevented.

An important and more specific object is the provision of a holder which is weighted so that it will remain always in a certain position, this holder further including an attaching bracket to which the holder proper is rotatably mounted.

An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install, positive in action, neat in appearance, eflicient and durable in service-and a general improvement in the art.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 5 is a view showing a slight modification.

Referring more particularly to the drawings I have shown my device as com rising an attaching bracket. 10 formed pre erably from a single piece of sheet metal bent to shape and including a base portion '11 from which extend spaced ears 12, The base is formed with suitable holes 13 for the passage of securing screws by means of which the bracket may be mounted either upon the top or underneath the arm A of a rocking chair or the like. Naturally it is preferable that the 1 bracket be mounted on the underside as it will then be ordinarily concealed from view.

The device further includes an arm 14 which in actual practice may conveniently be formed from a single piece of heavy wire or light rod of any proper gage, this arm including a shank 15 rotatably engaged through the ears 12 and provided at its end with an enlargement 16 which may be integral or attached and which is for the purpose of preventing withdrawal of the shank from engagement with the bracket. This arm further includes a ring portion 17 within which is suitably secured a cup 18 which has its bottom 19 heavily weighted. Obviously, if preferred, the cup may simply be cast with an arm thereon rotatable. through the ears, there being no limitation in this respect as such would be merely a mater of mechanical construction.

In case it is undesirable to screw or otherwise fasten the holding bracket to the arm of the chair, use may be made of the clamp 20 illustrated in Figure 5, which clamp takes the place of the above described bracket and is formed with spaced cars 21 through which the arm 14 passes.

The cup is intended to support a conventionalash tray B which is simply set thereinto but it is of course apparent that the cup itself might be formed as an ash tray if preferred.

In the operation it isevident that when a smoker seated in the rocking chair rocks back and forth, the weighted cup will remain always in horizontal or normal position no matter how violently the chair is rocked, the shank 15 turning within the bracket cars. In this way there will be no possibility of spilling the ashes.

From the foregoing description and a study of the drawin it will be apparent that I have thus provided a very simple, inexpensive and eflicient device for the purpose specified-which will not only be neat and attractive in appearance but which will also act positively to save soiling of the floor or floor covering.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I'reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

Having thus described my invention I claim:

In a device of the character described, a U-shaped bracket adapted to be mounted upon the under side of a chair arm or equivalent support and including space depending arms having aligned holes therethrough, a rod journaled through the holes in said arms and terminating at one end in a ring, means on said rod engaging outwardly of said spaced arms for preventing longitudinal displacement of the rod, a tray removably engaged within said ring and having a Weighted bottom whereby to remain normally in upright position, the rotatability of the rod through said bracket arm permitting dumping of the tray.
