  • This invention relates to certain improvements in sprinklers and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in the watering of lawns and the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character embodying a rotary sprinkling head having associated therewith means whereby said head is caused to operate under the influence of the pressure of the water passing through said head.

Be it known that I, ROBERT Z. FARMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the countyof Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
r)This invention relates to certain improvements in sprinklers and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in the watering of lawns and the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character embodying a rotary sprinkling head having associated therewith means whereby said head is caused to operate under the influence of the pressure of the water passing through said head.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising a tubular stem adapted for communication with a source of water under pressure together with a tubular head engaged therewith for free rotary movement and in communication with the stem, said head being provided with fins or blades disposed over the inlet opening of the head whereby the force or pressure of the water entering the head serves to rotate the same.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved sprinkler whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will 4be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be denitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a sprinkling device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in working position; y

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a stake adapted to be forced in the ground and which is provided adjacent its upper end portion with a disc or plate 2 to limit the extent of penetration of the stake l. The stake l as herein disclosed extends abore the disc or plate 2 and has engaged therewith a T-coupling 3. Operatively engaged with the stem or branch a of the coupling 3 is a nipple 4 with which is adapted to be coupled or connected a hose I-I leading from a suitable source of water supply.
The head of the coupling 3 has engaged therewith a tubular stem 5 of desired length and operatively connected with the upper end portion thereof is a nipple 6 having in swivelled connection therewith a sleeve 7.
The sprinkler head S constitutesa hollow sprinkling member provided with an induction opening 8, said opening being defined by a depending sleeve 9 which is adapted to be threaded or otherwise engaged with the sleeve 7 whereby the sprinkler head S is supported by the steam 5 for free rotary movement. The wall of the head S as desired points thereon is provided with a restricted eduction or discharge opening 10 through which the water is discharged and, by the r0- tation of the head S is evenly spread over the surface such as a lawn, to be sprinkled.
Immediately adjacent to the induction opening 8, the head S is provided with the internal fins or blades 11 the same being integrally formed with the wall of said head. The blades are disposed on an incline of approximately 450 and are reversely related, the inner or meeting ends of the blades being positioned at substantially the axial center of the opening 8, said blades crossing each other at a predetermined point inwardly of their outer margins. The points of connection of the fins or blades 11 are at opposite sides of the opening 8 but immediately adj acent thereto. As the water, which is under a certain degree of pressure, passes upwardly through the stem 5 and enters the head S the resistance offered b the fins or blades 11.will result in desire rotation of the head S and in a manner whereby no hindrance or obstruction is offered.- to the I requisitedischargegof the Water through the openings l0. The speed or rotation of the head S Will be dependent upon the flow of the Water into the head S as offered bythe discharge through thevopenings 10.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a sprinkler' constructed in accordance Withmy invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason offtheconvenience and rfacility With Whichit may be assembled and operated, and it will alsoibe obvious that myninvention is'suse'eptible of somerchange and modification Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do .not Wish to beunderstood aslimitingy myself to the precise* arrangement and formation of the s'ev eral parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed; v
I claim A sprinkler comprisinga tubular stem, a hollow sprinkler head, means for connecting the head to the stem to permit free rotation of the head, said head having an induction opening in its Wall in communication With the bore of the stem, internal blades carried by the head and oppositely inclined to partially overlie the induction opening, the adjacent ends of the blades being substantially at the axial center off'the inductionopening, the out'er marginal portion of each-vof the blades extending beyondy the similar mai1r ginal portion of the second blade, said blades being carried by the'wall of the head at op.
