Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH voN NIED- MANN, a citizen of Russia, residing at Charlottenburg, near Berlin, in the State of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following tol be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
My invention relates to improvements in locks, and more particularly in locks of the type in which the bolt or hasp is operated by means of a barrel mounted within the lock case and adapted to be rotated by means of bits formed on the key after setting locking members carried by the'barrel in nonlocking position. The object or" the improvementsvis to provide a lock which is safe as against operation by non-authorized persons, which can not be opened by other means except the correct key, and which does not permit impressions to be taken for making false keys. With this object in view my invention consists in constructing the locking members in the form of spring pressed bell crank levers pivotally mounted within the rotary barrel of the lock the outer arms of which project beyond the circumference of the barrel into position for being locked by suitable stops provided within the case of the lock, and the inner arms of which are in position for being acted upon by bits formed on the key for rocking the outer arms inwardly and out of locking position.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawings,.-V

In the example shown in the drawings the lock comprises a case a base plate 25 secured tothe open side of the .ca-se, and a hasp 4 mounted on a pivot bolt 3 and passinglthrough slots made in the side walls V5 and 6 of the case, one of said slots being shown at 11. To the base plate l25 a leaf spring 26 is secured which acts on the hasp .4 vand tends to push the same downwardly and into engagement with a. staple 9. The hasp carries a knob 7 for operation thereof by hand from the inner sidel of the door, and ,it isadapted for en gagement with the staple 9. For blocking the hasp in locking position a pawl 10 is pivotally mounted on the staple 9 which is adapted to be rocked upwardly and with its hook shaped end 101 the hasp. Y Y p l In the lockingv position the haspr 4 bears with its bottom edge on the bottom wall ofA the slot 11, and a locking pin 13` engages in a hole 131 made in the hasp 4. The pin 131 is guided in a sleeve V132 secured to the l front wall 21 of thecase, and itis 'acted upon by a spring 12 tendingv to push the saine intoV locking engagement with the hasp. To the pin an armV 15 is secured which is formed at its bottom end with aV beveled face 14. The hasp can be lifted out of lock the lock lookf f2 open at the rear side,
into engagement with v v rocking the-hasp upwardly7 the plate 17 is pressed by the spring 19in direction towards the door and below the hasp 4, which is thereby. prevented from falling downwardly and on the bottom wall of the slot- 11. In thisposition of the hasp the hole 131 isout of position for engagement by the bolt 13, andthe hasp can be lifted if desired. lf however the door is closed the cranked arm 18 strikes on the front face of the base plate 91 of the staple 9, so that the plate 17 is shifted rearwardly against the action of the spring 19 and away from the hasp. rEherefore the latter is free to drop into locking position, and the bolt 13 is shifted by the spring 12 into the hole 131 for locking thehasp.v Now the lock can be opened from without only by means of. the key. For opening the lock from within the bolt is retracted by means of a button 22 carriedthereby and located outside the plate 23 of the case 2.
For lifting the hasp 4 out of engagement with the staple 9 a barrel is provided, which is rotatably mounted with its end portions 27 and 28 in sleeves 23 and 24 carried respectively by the plates 21 and 25. The said barrel shows an axial bore 29 adapted to receive the key 31, a pin 30 vbeing axially mounted within said bore and corresponding to an axial bore` of the key. The wall of the bore 29'is provided with lugsy corresponding to notches of the keys, which lugs and notches are varied in different locks, as is known in the art. v
Furthermore the barrel shows a prismatic portion 32 proj ecting laterally therefrom and disposed between stop plates 33 and 34 secured tothe base plate 25,'and an arm 35 Vlocated inposition for engagement with the beveled face 14 of the arm 15 of the pin 13, :so-that when turning the barrel 27, 28 the pin 13 is shifted out of locking engagement with the hasp 4, which is therefore free to be lifted by the arm 35.
rEhe locking members of the barrel consist of bell crank levers 36 and 39 mounted respectively on pins 37 and 38 secured to the wall ofA the portion 32 and acted upon by coiled springs 38 and 41 tending to. push Vthe levers with their outer arms out of the portion 32,-as is shown in Fig. 8. The outer arm of the lever 36 is recessed as is shown at 361 in Figs. 12 and 13, and the said recess the lock and Y is engaged by the outer arm of the lever 42, as is shown in Fig. 8. As appears from Fig. 6 the outer ends of the levers are disposed between shoulders 43 and 44 of the plates 33 and 34, so that in the projected position of the levers the barrel can not be turned by the key.
` The levers 36 and retracted out of locking position by inserting and turning the key. The inner arm of the lever 39 is formed with a circular cam face 45 engaging in a groove 46 of the key 31. Therefore when turning the key its cyiindrical portion engages the cam face 45 so as to force the same to the left in Fig. 8, and to rock the lever 39 with its outer part 42 into the portion 32. Simultaneously a lug 47 provided at the end of the key engages the inner arm 40 of the leverv 36 so as to force the same to the left in Fig. 8 and to rock the lever 36 with its outer arm into the portion 32, whereupon the barrel 27, 28 is free to be turned between the rstops 33 and 34.
.ln order to make the levers 36 and 39 accessible by false keys, pick-locks and the like a partition wall 49 is provided between the said levers, which wall extends inwardly to the pin 30. rihe shaft of the key-is provided with a corresponding'recess 50 the breadth of which corresponds tothe thickness of the wall 49, so that thekey may be turned with its outer end and its main portion located at opposite sides of the partition 49.
While in describing the invention reference has been made to a' particular example embodying the same I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the drawings, and that various changes may be made in the general arrangement of the lock and the construction of its parts without departing from the invention.
I claim: y
1. In a lock, the combination, with the locking member, of a barrel adapted to move said member and to receive and be turned by a key, a stop, a key formed with a longitudinal recess, and an elbow lever rockingly mounted V'within said barrel and normally projecting out of the same into position for locking engagement with said stop andhaving an inner cam face engaging in said recess of the key and adapted when turning the key to slide on the circumference thereof for retracting. the lever out-of locking engagement with said stop. j
2. In a lock, the combination, with the locking member, of a barrel adapted to move said member and to receiveand be turned by a key, a stop, a key formed with a recess and a cam face, and two rockable levers within said member on independent pivots and normally projecting out of the 42 are adapted to beiso same into position for locking engagement with said stop, one of said levers having an inner cam face in position for engagement With said recess and adapted-When turning the key to slide on the circumference thereof for retracting the lever out of locking engagement with said stop, and the other one of said levers being in position for engagement- With said cam for being retracted thereby out of locking position upon rotation of the key.
3.
