DOUBLE-ACTING PLNGR FUMP.
.Application filed July 23, 1924. Serial No. 727,674.
although the vinvention is not limited in.
its iield of usefulness to the pumping ot' such liquids. lt has for its primary objects; the provision of an improved construction in which provision is made for draining the liquid from the cylinder and from the packing grooves surrounding the plunger when the actuation of the plungerl or piston is stopped; the provision or" `improved means for protecting 'the packing gland of the piston or plunger rod from contact with the corrosive fluid handled by the pump and for preventing any leaks at suoli gland; and the provision of improved and simplilied inlet and discharge valve constructions for securing the desired double action in the pump. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
.Figure l is a partial vertical section through the pump and partial side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front elevation.` Fig. 3 is a plan view. Figs. 4 to 7 are detail views of the cylinder casting, Fig. 4 being a side elevation with the lower portion broken away along the line :lV-IV of Fig. 5, Fig. 5 being a section on the line V-V of Fig. 4, Fig. 6 being aside elevation, and Fig. 7 i being a horizontal section on the line Vil-VH oit' Fig. 4. Figs. 8 to 12 are enlarged detail views of the inlet or suction valve, Fig. 8 being a partial plan View and partial horizontal section on the line VIH- VIII o1" Fig. 9, Fig. 9 being a partial front elevation and partial vertical section on the line IX-IX of Fig. 10, Fig. 10 being a partial side elevation and partial vertical section on the line X- X of Fig. 9, and Fig. 11 being` a plan lview of the valve retainer. And Figs. 12 to 14 are enlarged detail views oit the outlet or discharge valve, Fig. 12 being a partial plan view and partial horizont-al, section on the line Kil-#Kil of Fig, 13, Fig. 13"'bein'g` av partial i'ront elevation and partial vertical section on the line XIIlQ-XH. oit' Fig. 14,V and F ig. 14 being a partial side elevation and partial section on the .line XlVy-V-XV of Fig. 13. i f AReferring to the general arrangement shown in'Figs. 1, 2 and, 1 is'thebase casting, upon which the pump is carried,
having a pair ot pedestals2, 2 in` which is mounted the drivenjshaiit 3, provided with thek belt pulleys 154. li pair' of cranl-zs f 5, are mounted iny a second of pairot pedestals 6, (i, the cranlrsbeingrotated from thesl'iaft 3 by nieansjof suitable reduction gearingin the casings f2', 7. 'l iecranlsa're connected to a cross head 8 by meansr ci the connecting rods 9, 9, to which is-secured the upper end of thepiston rod 10; The piston rod is guided in the sleeve or collar 11 carried by the upperend ci. the standard 12, idly bolted tothe base cast-ing ,1,fas-indi-A cated in the drawings. `f I i' The pump proper is preferably made up` ofA tour castings bolted together andy comprising, the cylindercasing having the.
such `standard being rigy cavity or -b.ore.\1'4 in which-.the plunger` y 15 is mounted; the lower cylinder head bolted to the base casting 1; the uppercyl` inder head 1'? thev inletr or suction lva-lve casing 1S; and the outletor discharge valve casing 19.
Extending along one side of the cylinder f,
casing arethe pair of l inletv l`passages 2O and 2l (see Fig. 4 in connection Vwith Fig.` 1), the passage 2O leading into the lower.' end of the cylinder cavitynt'QQ, `as indicated in Fig. 1, whilelhe other passage' 21 similarly leads into the upper Aend oi the cylinder cavity at 23, as will be underv stood by reierenceto Figs. 4 and 7.; These passages 2O and 21 each l'alsohave an outlet branch leading from the lower ends thereof into the casing 19, as indicated at 24,:
Q4, a' d inlet openings 25, Q5 at their upper: ends leading :trom the casing 1S (Figspl and 4) lili) The inlet or suction casing 18 kand the valves therein are shown in Figs. 8 to l1. The interior ofthe casing is dividediinto two chambersV or passages 2G, 2S lby the vertical wall 27, and such passages*communicate through the openings 98, 28 withthe openings 25, 25 (Figs. 1 and 4), leading into the passages 20, 21. The chambers or passages 26, 26 communicate through openings 29, 29 with a chamber 30 therebeneath having the suction inlet 31. Theyopenings 29, 29 are provided with the ball checkpvalves 32, 32 limited in upward movement by the sleeves .33, 38. The top of the casing is closed by means of the cap 34.
The cap 34 has a drain passage 35 leading 'from the chamber 36 in the upper cylinder head 17, and the drainage from this passage 35 .leads into the vertical cavity orv passage 37 (Figs. 8 and 10), leading down into the suction inlet. In this ina-nner suction is valways applied to the chamber-36 duringA the operation of the pump so that any leakage to the chamber is immediately conducted awaywitho'ut coming into contact with the gland 38. Leakage at this gland is thus prevented, and thefcorrosive liquid, which the pump is designe-d to handle is prevented from coming into contact with the packing ot the gland and destroying it. The outlet or discharge casing 19 and the valves therein are shown in Figs. 12 to 14, the construction being very similarl to that of the suction casing and valves as `iust described. A partition or wall-39 divides one half of the casing into two chambers 40 and 41 which communicate through the openings 42 with the openings 24, 24 (Figs. 1 and 4) leading to the passages 2O and 21. The chambers 4() and 41 also communicate through ythe openings 43 with the chamber 44 (Fig. 12), such openings being controlled by means of the check valves 45. An outlet passage 46 leads from the chamber 44. Packing groovesin the collar'47 tend to reduce theV leakage into the chamber 36 at this point. y
In' operation, as the plunger 15 moves upwardly, the liquid on the upperside flows through the opening 23 4 and 7) and into the passage 21, from which it is forced through one of the openings 24 into the outlet casing 18, past one'of the check valves and through the outlet 46. At this time no liquid can bev sucked from the discharge casing through the otherpassages 24 leading into the passage 2Oy since the other check valve `in the discharge casing prevents this. Liquid is supplied to the lower side of the plunger 15 during this upward movement, through the passage 20 (Fig. 1), such passage receiving its supply throughone ot the openings 25 leading into the suction or inlet casing 18. This liquid is supplied from the suction inlet 31 past one of the check valves 32. At this time no liquid can be forced into thecasing 18 from the upper side of' the plunger through the passage 21 and the other opening 25 leading into the casing 18, because of the other check valve 32.
On the reverse movement ofthe plunger,
the action in the inlet and discharge casings is reversed, the liquid from the lower side oiu the plunger flowing through the passage 20 andinto the discharge casing and .thence past the check valve which had previously been closed, while liquid is drawn into the cylinder above the plunger through the passage 21, such liquid being supplied 'from the casing 18 past the check valve which had previously been closed.
ln order to provide -a packing for the plunger 15, the grooves 48 are employed in the wall ol the plunger cavity -or bar at its Acentral portion, and vas indicatedin Figs.
4 andf5, the grooves are placed in communication with the passages 2O and 21 by means ot the lateral passages 49. This provides for `a supply of liquid to the packing grooves 48 during the operation ot the pump and when` this operationl is concluded, the passages 49 permit the passages to drain as well as the part o 'l' the cylinder above the plunger. This is important where acid lis the liquid pumped, as the removal of such acid is necessary in order to avoid sulphating the cylinder and piston surfaces. The liquid collecting in the bottom of the cylinder after the pump stops is drained out through a. suitable outlet 5() (Fig. 2) provided-with` a suitable cut oil cock or valve.
