Be it known that I, ADAM MORRIS, a citizen-ofthe United States, residing at S'utersville, in the county of VVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements Safety-Valve Attachments, of which the following is a hold the valvein its opened position against the tension of the abovementionedyieldable means, and to release the valve automatically when the lightis accidentally extinguished.

A two-part clamp 16 is secured to the ste'm'12' of the valve, and terminally connected with this clamp 16 is a coiled spring 17, the opposite end of which is secured to a fixed bracket 18. The spring 17 is employed to automatically move the valve from its opened' to its closed position in a manner to be hereinafter more fully described. Supported by one end of the valve is a base plate 20 which has secured thereto a plurality of binding posts21 with which the terminals of various wires are connected,

spectively. Alsov supported by the said valve is a bracket 2 1 which has mounted thereon a magnetr25 associated with the valve III a mannerto turn with the latter,
and in order to retain the valve in opened position against the tension of the spring 17,
the bracket 24' which supports the magnet also sup'ports a pivotedlocking element 26 which is designed to engage the teeth 27 of a rack bar 28 which ismounted upon the pipe 10 adjacent the valve 11. The locking element 26 terminates to provide a singly engaged portion 29 whereby the locking element may be released from the rack bar manually when desired, although the locking element is arranged to be controlled by the magnet 25 in a manner to be hereinafter described. A switch including a fixed contact 31, and
' a-movable contact 32 is connected in circuit with the magnet 25, and when this switch is closed, the said magnet 25 is energized. The movable contact 32 is carried by the valve for rotation therewith, and when the valve is opened, the movable contact 32 is brought into engagement with the fixed contact 31. In other words, the switch just described is closed when the valve 11 is opened,-butthemagnet 25 does not become V energized until the circuit is closed, through the switch, this circuit including a thermostat indicated generally at A and which is connected in circuit with the switch re ferred to. - The thermostatA may be of any suitable construction, and is supported by a bracket 33 upon the curved extension 13 of the pipe 10 and the globe supporting member 15.

vv hen the valve 11 is opened, the spring 17 is tensioned, and the locking element 26 gravitates into operative association with the rack bar to hold this valve open against hen the burner is lighted, the thermostat is put into operation, whereupon the indicator moves across the face of the thermostat and away from the fixed Contact 35, thus opening the ll hen the valve 11 is opened, the switch including the fixed and movable contact 31 and respectively, is closed, but the magnet is no-t'energized because the circuit including the thermostat A is open. Now, should the burner for any reason become accidentally extinguished, the thermostat A is affected in a manner which allows the indicator to return to normal position into engagement with the fixed contact 35, thereby closing the circuit through the switch above referred to, energizing the magnet 25. \Vhcn the magnet is energized, it attracts and moves the locking element 26 away from the rackbar'28, thereby releasing the valve so that the latter is automatically returned to its closed position under the influence of the spring 17. hen the valve is thus moved to its closed position, the movable contact 32 of the switch is separated from the fixed contact 31, thus again opening the circuit. The source of energylfor saidcircuit is indicated at 37. The safety attachment is both simple in construction and ,eficient in operation for the purpose intended.
lVhile it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, l .desireto have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is:
A device or" the character described, a gas conducting pipe provided with a rotary valve, resilient means for normally holding the valve in closed position, a rack bar sup ported at one side of the valve, an electromagnet fixed to rotate with the valve, a latch element carried by the armature of the electro-magnet and adapted to normally engage the rack bar whereby to hold the valve in open position against the action of the the latch element from the rack bar to permit the valve to close, and means operated upon the manual rotation of the valve to make .and break the electric circuit.
