i H. HOLDEN BINDING DEVICE Filed June- 4, 1925 Att'y's. A
Patented Mar. 24, 1925.
1 uNiTED STATES PATENT orner..-
HIRAM HOLDEN, or MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
BINDING DEVICE.
Application filed :rune 4, 1923. serai No. 643,456.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be itknown that I, HIRAM HoLDEN, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and4 State of New Hampshire, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Binding Devicesof which the following is a'specification.
a structure is illustrated in my United States Patent ,No.^l,395,277. This inventionhas to `do specifically with a device which may be attached to an ordinary sewing machine'to insure that the `leather-'and the extension strip bear the proper relation toeach other `when the stitching velement sews the two'together.' i
provision of such means `which may be as near automaticnr its operation as poss1ble,
, requiring the'minimum amount of attention, which will have: universal adjustments to adapt it to the varioustypes of machines now in use, and which'may have anadjustment providing for the leather extending n varying distances into the folded strip.
Obviously this invention is applicable -in .its principle to other uses than the sewing of an extension strip to a leather shoe upper7 as disclosed in the above mentioned patent, although the invention is particularly applicable "to this phase of the shoe industry.v
4I have illustrated a preferred form of device in the drawings which has been found lto satisfactorily produce the desired results,
but it is to be understood that this is merely illustrated of one form and is not to' be taken `as limiting the scope of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan `view of one embodiment of my invention in its relation to the presser foot of a sewing machine. j
Fig. l is a detail View of the nose element. Fig. 2 is a front ,elevation of the device of F 1g. l.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
` Fig. 4 is a rear view.
Fig. 5 isv a detail of the main body of the device. `1
The primary object of my invention is thel Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional elevation. F ig. 7 -is a plan view. showing anL extension `strip sewed to a piece of leather.
In the preferred form of device I provide `a substantially double hollow V-shaped ele n l ment pivotally attached to a universally adjustable member adapted to besecured to lthe bed plate of an ordinary sewing machine as by means of a screw, the adjustment being necessary to adapt the device to the varied machines in order that the proper relation may vexist between this device and the needle and presser foot of the machine.
Attached to the V element by adjustable :means is a guiding element which has a substantially V-shaped extension adjacent the yinner portion of the hollow Vk element, the
distance of spacing between these two members being regulated by a set screw carried by lthehollow V member. The material intended to be usedas an extension to the vleather or other material is fed through the .folded strip kenclosing the base material then passes beneath the presser foot of the machine and the two are sewed together in the usual manner. l
Describing more in detail the preferred form illustrated in the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the bed plate of an ordinary sewing machine which is usually provided with a screw threaded opening to which the various attachments may be secured. A screw 2 engages this screw threaded opening and secures to the bed plate the universal element 8. It will be seen that the screw 2 engages the slot 4 in the part 3 so that the whole device may be adjusted in any direction. Pivotally secured to the part 3 as by means of pivot `5 and held against movement by a screw 5a is an element which includes a hollow V-shaped portion 6 and `a flared end, the front and back of the V of the member 6 adjacent the nose 9 is ari ranged in the form of a narrow V in order to insure that the material is yfolded when it passes beneath the presser :toot 10 to be sewed by the needle 11. The hollow V niember increases from a narrow V adjacent the member 9` to a wide and open V at a point adjacent the lip 7. This larger lip T'is provided with` a broad curve which allows the extension material as it comes from a roll or the like to engage the same naturally and pass into` the narrower V portion without diiiiculty.
Attached to the upper portion ofthe hol low V member is a guide elementhaving an extension 12 provided with a right angular slot 13. A screw 14 having its shank passing through the slot 13 engages the upper portion ofthe hollow V member `and allows the guide element to be adjusted in relation to the hollow V member in the necessary directions. The main body 15 of the guide is substantially Vshaped, corresponding to the degree ot' closure of the hollow V element. This part 15 is disposed within thev open V of the hollow V member and has a portion 16 extending beyond the hollow V member and to a point adjacent the nose 9 thereof. The set s crew 17 in the nose 9 determines the nearness of the part 16 to the nose 9, which determines the amount of overlap between the body material and the extension strip.
It will be apparent from the drawings that it is desirable to have thepart 16 adjacent the needle 111 and so arranged that the presser foot will clear the same, as in the case of the nose 9. It will thus be seen that viirst the hollow V member or the device in its entirety may be readily adjusted by means of vthe screws 2 and to get a rough adjustment on any desired machine that will bring the nose 9 and the portion 16 adjacent the needle 11 and the presser foot 10. Final accurate adjustment may be made by regulating the set screw 14. `The desired amount of overlap between the base material and the extension strip may then be secured by manipulating the set screw 17, and as long as the base material contacts with the inner face ot' the part 1G, thisdeiinite overlap will occur and will occur with such regularity as to be automatic.
l claim:
1. A binder of the type described, including a hollow V element adapted to completely enclose an extension strip, a guide member adjacent to and extending within `the open walls of the V member, and means carried by the V element to ladjust the spacing between the guide and the hollow V member.
2. The device of claim 1, saidv hollow V member having a nose thereon, said adjusting means being carried by. said nose.
3. The device of claim 1, said hollow V member having a nose thereon, adjusting means carried by said nose for spacing the guide from the nose.
4. The device of claim 1, said guide having an extension thereon extending-beyond the hollow portion of the, hollow V element.
In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signature.
