UNITEDSTATE'S 'VIN' GEN'I. G. MIGKLER, OF ALBANY, GEORGIA.
WIRE STRET'GHER.
Application filed. April 14, 1923. Serial No. 632,120.
To all whom 2'25 may concern: j
Be it known that I, VINcENT C. Mrcnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Dougherty and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Stretchers, of which the following is a specificatiOmrefcrence being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wire stretchers and more particularly to a wire stretcher for use in'stretching the wires of pole lines An important object of the inventio-nis to provide a device of this character which may be used for taking up slack in telephone and telegraph lines without interrupting the service thereon.
A further obj ectof the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be very cheaply produced; which is simple in its construction and which. will be durable and efficient in service.
These and other objects I attain by the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates an inverted U-shaped frame thearms of which are provided with pairs of aligned openings through which are rotatably directed horizontal shafts 11, 12 and 13. The shaft 13 is arranged immediately adjacent the lower ends of the arms and has mounted thereon between the arms a drum 1%, preferably formed of hollow sheet metal, and having at one end thereof a ratchet 15 and at the opposite end thereof a gear 16. Upon the shaft 12, which is arranged immediately above the shaft 13 between the arms, a gear 17 is mounted which meshes with the gear 16 of the drum 1 f. Theouter end of the shaft 12 has mounted thereon a second gear of the arm of the U-shaped member against which the gear 19' abuts 22 which frame.-
At the lower ends of the arms of the U- shaped member at each side of the shaft 13 are secured the endsof the arms 23 of U- shaped members having formed in the bight portions thereof openings 241. The drum 14 has formed therethrough between the ratchet and gear thereof an opening 25 and an electrical conductor 26, preferably of flexible steel cable, passes through the openings 24L of the bight portions of the U-shaped guide members and through the opening of the drum. The ends of this conducting element are provided with conducting attaching clips27 which are removable and which may be employed to secure the ends of this cable to a wire from which slack is to be removed. It is pointed out that when the conducting clips 27 are secured to the wire the cable 26 is placed in parallel with the wire and accordingly when by operation of the devicethe slack has been taken up from the wire this slack may be removed and the wire spliced without interrupting communi cation over the wire. In order to hold the with a stop collar prevents its shifting within the drum against rotation at pivoted dog 28, is M secured to one of the arms 23 of one of the U-shaped guide members for coaction with the ratchet 15 of the drum let and may be swung into place when the slack has been removed from the wire to hold the drum against rotation during the splicing operation. When the slack is'to be taken from the wire in but a single direction the'removable clip 27 at one end of the conducting element 26 is removed and this end of the conducting element knotted to prevent 1ts passage through the opening 25 of the drum.
In the foregoing it is believed to be obvious that by the use of the device constructed in accordance with my invention, slack may be removed from pole lines without interrupting communication thereover. It will furthermore be obvious that the structure hereinbefore set forth is capable of some change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of my invention and I accordingly do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A device for stretching pole lines to remove slack therefrom without interrupting service over the line being stretched, including a support, a drum rotatab-ly mounted in said support, guides extending at opposite sides of the drum and attached to the support, openings formed in said guides and drum, and a conducting element directed through the openings of the guides and drum and provided at its ends with means whereby it may be electrically connected with the pole line.
2. In a wire stretcher, an inverted U- shaped frame, a drum rotatably mounted between the lower ends of the arms of the frame, U-shaped guide members secured to the arms'of the frame at opposite sides of the drum and provided in their bight portions with openings, an opening through the drum, and a conducting element directed through the openings of the guide members and drum and provided at its ends With clips for electrically connecting the same to a pole line.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
VINCENT C. MICKLER.
