Extensio n -Tablel-Slides.
Y Patented1uly14,1874'r No.l53,040.
UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
ABIA Z. BODA, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-TABLE SLIDES.
Specilicaiion forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,040, dated J uly 14, 1874; application filed February 19, 187' 4.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABTA Z. BODA, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Table Slides; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specilication, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are cross-sections of my improved slide upon lines passing through the centers of the clamps used for taking up the slack or lost motion of the slides.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the iigures.
In the use of extension-tables, much difficulty has been experienced from the wear of the slides and their consequent sagging at the center of the table long before other portions of the latter were worn or injured.
To remedy this defect is the design of my invention, which consists in combining, with the slide-bars of an extensiontalole, a clamping device having a bearing upon one of the interlocking surfaces of the slides, and made adjustable toward or from the same, so as to hold the opposite or interlocking surfaces of said bars in contact, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A and B represent the sections of a table-slide, which sections are connected together, laterally and vertically, by means of a dovetail groove, a, and a corresponding tenon or tongue, b, that are formed, respectively, within and upon their contiguous faces. Passing vertically upward through a corresponding opening in the lower side of the grooved rail A is a metal bar, O, that has any desired shape transversely, and at its upper inner end corresponds in shape to the lower face of the tongue b, so that when pressed upward against the latter the entire end of said bar shall have a bearing upon the same. At its lower end the bar C is extended horizontally and laterally outward, and is provided with an opening, c, that receives a woodscrew, D, which latter passes upward through said opening, and has its threaded end contained within a corresponding opening in the bar A. As thus arranged, it will be seen that by turning the screw D so as to move the bar upward the upper end of the latter will be caused to bear against the tongue b with any required degree of force, and, by holding said tongue iirmly against the upper side of the groove a, prevents any looseness or play between the slides A and B. A second bar, c, having the form shown in Fig. 1, is fitted within a corresponding groove or opening 1n the slide B, and, by means of a screw, Ij, placed beneath its lateral horizontal arm, 1s pressed downward, so as to cause its upper hooked arm c to bear against the lower face of the groove a, by which means the upper side of said groove and the contiguous face of the tongue b will be held together, as before, with any desired degree of iirmness.
As the slides wear from use, a slight change in the position of the screws will compensate for such wear, and render the condition of said parts the same as when new.
It will be seen that, as the office of the bars C and E and screws D and F is to maintain contact between the upper bearing and en gaging surfaces of the slides, it is not essential that said bars should have the exact forms shown, but only that their operations should be substantially the same.
By the use of the clamps or bars, the accuracy of adjustment and durability of the slides are largely increased without material increase of the cost of the same.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- 'lhe combination, with the slide-bars of an extension-table, of a clamping device, substantially as described, which has a bearing upon one of the interlocking-surfaces of the slides, and is made adjustable toward or from such surfaces, as set forth, so as to hold the opposite or interlocking surfaces of said bars in contact, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of February, 1874.
ABIA ZELLER BODA.
