Riveted to the lower lextremity of the locking member is a spring metal-plate 12 vwhich has its upper extremity inwardly flared as at 13. This plate 12 serves as anv antirattling means. The numeral 14 designates a clip adapted to penetrate the` opening 11 of the angular extension 10 so thaty after passing through the Arecessed portion 15 of the member V11,v it will lbe received in va pocket 16 formed inthe retaining plate 8. It will be observed that the clip 14 adjacent its lower extremity is oHset, whereby a positive latching action is obtained.
In the modified form of the invention as disclosed to advantage in Figure 4, I propose tolengthen the back plate 8 and instead of continuing the extension to form n the angle brace 11 as shown to advantage in Figure 2, terminate the extension so that it is bent vertical adjacent its upper eXtremity as ,indicated by the numeral 17 and is adapted to lie in parallelism with, but spaced from the upper extremity of the back plate. It will be notedthat the back plate 8 and the extremity 17 are apertured so as to receive a headed pin or screw 18, while a washer 19 and a locking pin 2O are employed to retain the screw 18 in the device when the same is unlocked. n
The operation of my device is as follows IVhen the stop has been applied to the window sash A and it is desired to lock the sash to prevent the entrance of an unauthorized person andv yet at the same time afford a certain amount of ventilation to the room, the locking plate 9 is swung in the position as shown to advantage in Figure 7. Upward movement of the lower sash will cause the extension 10 to retain the lower sash from further upward movei ment and thus the lower sash will be locked. On fthe other hand, when it is desired tounlocl theA window so that the lower sash may be moved to its full length in the window casing, then it is only necessary to actuate the locking plate as shown to advantage in Figure 6, andthe sashes will readily pass by each other.
When it is desired to retain the device in its locked position, lit is only necessary to are to be taken as preferred examples of the 4 same, and that various changesv in the shape,
size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having `thus described my invention, I claim A device of the character described comprising a base plate adapted to be secured to the upper sash of a window, a vertically disposed locking plate hingedly connected to the base plate and having an extension formed thereon, means detachably vsecured to the locking plate for retaining the device in a locked position, said means comprising a spring clip penetrating the extension of the locking plate and having its extremity offset, for the purpose specilied. y
