UNITED STATES PATENT: OFFICE.
DIRECTORY. I 1
Application filed July 3,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. HOARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alcester, in the county of Union and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Directory, of which the following is a specification.
This invention appertainsto means for imparting information to tourists and other persons concerning a city or town, at which they are stopping, or through which they are passing.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision of a novel illuminated housing adapted to be secured to a convenient support such as a lamp post or the like having the name of a city and other information thereon for receiving pamphlets for free distribution, which contain information concerning the city, road maps and the like.
Another prime object of the invention is to provide novel means for illuminating the housing, so that the same can be seen from various sides thereof and for illuminating the name of the city carried thereby, and novel means for supporting the directory and advertising pamphlets therein.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character, which will be durable and efficient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture and one which can be placed upon the market at a small cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:
Figure 1. is a perspective view of the improved device.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section through the same.
Figure 3 is a vertical central section through the improved device, and
Figure 1 is a central vertical transverse section through the improved device taken at right angles to Figure 3 of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views the letter A generally indicates the improved device, which comprises a housing 5 preferably formed of sheet metal, suitably 1923. Serial No. 649,360.
treated, so as to resist deterioration by the elements. The housing 5 includes a lower wall 6, a rear wall 7 side walls 8, a front wall 9, and a top wall 10. If so desired the top wall 10 can be connected to the rear wall 7 by means of hinges 11, so that ready access can be had to the housing, for a purpose, which will be hereinafter more fully described. The cover or top wall 10 can be held against opening movement by unauthorized persons by means of a suitable lock 12 if so desired.
I The front wall 9 can also be provided wit-h a relatively large opening 13 which is adapted to be normally closed by a door 14 connected to the wall 9 by means of hinges 15. This door 14; carries a suitable transparent panel 16 held in place by means of any preferred type of frame 17. This transparent panel 16 can have printed or otherwise formed thereon the name of the city in whicl'i the device is to be positioned, as indicated by the reference character 18 and other information as indicated by the referencecharacter.19. As shown. this matter on the transparent panel 16 below the name of the city 18 reads as follows: Silent road and city directory stop and take one. Thus this gives persons passing by information to the fact that free city directories are arranged inside of the casing. In order to facilitate the removal of the pamphlets from the housing, the door 14 is provided with a transverse slot 20, which is normally covered by hinge swinging door 21, which can have stamped or otherwise placed thereon the slogan Open up, so that persons will know that they are to open up the door 21 and take a pamphlet therefrom.
The side walls 8 can also be provided with transparent or translucent panels 22, for a purpose which will be hereinafter also more fully described.
Arranged within the housing 5 and se cured to the side walls 8 in spaced relation to the front and rear walls 9 and 7 is arranged a partition 25, which terminates short of the lower end of the housing 5 and this partition 25 defines a chute 26 for receiving the pamphlets 27 and an illuminating compartment 28 in which is adapted to be'positioned an electric incandescent lampor the like 29. This lamp 29 is carried by a suitable socket 30 supported by the partition wall 25. The electric feed wires 31 for the lamp can bebrough-t intp the ho using 5,througli a suitable conduit 3 1 d' can lead from the supporting post 33..
The Supporting post 3 can be f any preferred type or nature and if so desired a lamp post can be utilized for holding, the housing 5 in position. Suitable clamps 34, are provided for securing the housing 5 to the supporting post Now it can eem thaty he, lamps-2 w l l ehtite y lumiuetethe tin rarentspaur l =end-ithe s de,i zanspa zen in e ts 22- clth s h rmithe mpre d de ce o; ld ):.;56fi l' y also; of. eeur e: a il ta ez he reading Q 'the matte wri en Q 'zOthQIEW SBJP i d? 9, 1 t e ra spare tpan l-w he; p mphle s 2.7 a adap d t eenta n 1 n or ati n e teem g=- h ty, hic11 he-hou ng 5, s positi ne such. a the. hi .-v y thereof, Points of in ere t,timetables; eadimapsr dvert sing att r ndit eili he p mphlets 27; re r nge lfin a u table P l n -h iparti ion 2 andy he lowermost It. can be seenthat when it is desired to Kenmore-1apamphlet froiuthe ho s ng, h it is merely necessary to open the door 21 and insert the hand in the housing and grasp the lowermost pamphlet and pull the same outward.
It is merely necessary to open the top wall 10., when itisdesired to fill the chute with the pamphlets.
From the foregoing deseription, it canbe seeen that I have provided a, novel and attractive means, for giving informa ion, to automobile, tourists and the like concerning a, town .through which, they are passing.
