UNITED STATES JOSEPH P. WOODS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLmIA- STATISTICAL COMPILATION DEVICE;
Application filed October 7, 1924. Serial No. 742,280.
To a]! whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .TosErH P. Woons, a citizen of the United States, residing in Washington. in the District of Columbia.
have invented new and useful Improvemcnts in Statistical Compilation Devices, of whi h the following is a specification.
My invention has reference, in its broad aspect. to improvements in devi es for use 0 in conjunction with suitable perforating, as orting and distributing machinery for the purpose of facilitating the classification of statisti al data such as is commonly required in the compilation of directories of all kinds, pay rolls. tax, voters and mailing lists. army rosters. and the like; and more parti ularly it is my purpose to improve upon and greatly increase the adaptability of the similar means defined with particularity in my previous Patent #13 1355?) granted June, 15th, 192
Hcreto'fore the cards, slips or sheets employed to receive perforations indicative of the data to he classified have been found to he exceedingly restricted in the character of their makeup, such for instance as in the number of charaters thereon displayed and in the number of fields, thereby placing a decided limit upon their use. My present card. slip or sheet as distinguished from those above defined ccntemnlntcs, amonc ther things. the ut limtion of means in the form of multiple designating: perforations and a unique arrangement f characters, symbols. letters, numerals, fields and the like, for gr atly increasing the amount of data which may he placed upon e. card. Furth m re. not only is my present ciirrl adapted for use in conjun th n with assorting and di tributing machinery for the compilati n of statistical data. but it may b employer] ui h e ual facility in the automatic operation 0? any key hoard controlled machine f the type exempl d by a supplemcntary key board controlling device for translating the significance of the rsrforations in the pun hed nods to he conventioiinl manipulation of the hey. thereby permitting of the automatic operation through the instrumciitality of so; i' s rit cards of typewriters. linotype, and monotype machines and the like.
More particularly, it is an essential object of my invention to simplify the devices now in use by consolidating in units certain g oups of characters,- letters, symbols, numerals. and the like, such for instance, as the letters of the alphabet and a number of ommon abbreviations. and then accomplishinc the general designation of that unit by a designating perforation. and the particular segregation of a character in that unit by another perforation. The key board for a punchinir device adapted for use with my invention is thereby greatly simplified for it is necessary to have but one key for each of my several vertical and horizontal delineated fields. each field being a unit as above d fined, while the range of adaptabih ity of the "21rd. sheet or slip is greatly incr ased.
The structural elements and other means employed to ac vimplish the above and other eq ally iinmrtant objects and advantages wil he hereinafter more fully des ribed in detail and specifically pointed out in the ilriims appended hereunto and forming a part of th s specification, but the scope of the invention may only be determined by the limits defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiments of my nvention Figure 1 is a view of an arrangement of my card adapted to reeive such data as is usually required in the compilation of city directories. etc., and hearing in the left hand columns numerals designed to identify by code certain common names such as Smith, Jones, Brown. or the like,
Figure 2 is a view of an arrangement of my card adapted for the purnose of city directories and the like and showing the mann r of perforating the some to correspond with the person. business and address specitied,
Figure 3 is a view of se eral to ified for ns cf my arrangement o chare.c '.r and especially adapted for the compile n of directories,
Figure 4 is a view of the key board of a purlic ing machine adapted for use with my car In the drawings like characters of reference designate like or similar parts throughout the several views, in which The numeral (1) designates a card bearing 45 vertical delineated columns (2) which are identified by reference numerals (3) and notches (4), the urpose of which is to facilitate the use ofmy card in the manipulation of key board controlled machines such as typewriters, linotypes and monotype machines or the like. The card is further divided into preferably 12 horizontal delineated columns or fields (5), the lower nine of which are designated by reference numerals (6) and the u per three by designating characters X1-IE2 and O, or the cipher column. The card is also preferably divided, in some instances, into vertical heavy line delineations (7) representing sections corresponding to data to be compiled.
In the form of my card shown in Figure 1 the twent -six letters of the alphabet and thrtwo ab reviations Mo. and St. are arranged in four groups which are vertically consecutive and arranged in fields defined b vertical delineations as shown, there is ago a fifth column including any desired and commonly used symbols. In the three remaining vertical left hand fields are numerals from one to nine so that data covering digits of three places can be punched. This numeral unit may be. and preferably is used for the purpose of coding certain common names as Smith, Jones. Brown or the like or to indicate long names for which ab reviation is necessary for proper designati' n on the card. The numerals 1 to 9 also designate the horizontal fields. As indicated. when read horizontally the alphabet and symbols of the five fields are arranged in units as follows: AHNT (symbol). BIOU (:ymbol). (JPV (symbol). DKQW (symbol), ELRX (symbol). F Me. St. Y (symbol), and GMSZ (symbol); there are seven such units and they are arranged in the horizontal fields identified by the numerals 3 to 9. Above the units are horizontal fields identified by Xl--X2-O-1 and 2; the 0 (or cipher) field being used as a check to show that a column has not been missed or the like. Manifestly then if punches can be made in the card to designate the unit and the particular letter or symbol in the unit complete words can be spelled out or street addresses or the like. This is the end I desire to accomplish in the most. simple manner possible.
I utilize one key in the key board of a suitable punching machine for each of the five vertical delineated columns of letters and symbols, and one key for each of the seven horizontal delineated columns of letters and symbols. The five keys for the vertical columns bear the following indicia 0space-tl, Xl-HLTKLMc M: X2NOPQRStS; 1TUV\VXYZ: and
five indicia may be indicated, and then at the same time manipulating the designating key to specify the character in that unit. the proper letter or symbol is absolutely segregated. t
In Figure 2 is shown a complete name. business the code number of which is 62 and address. The first letter of the name is S, therefore key 9 bearing the letters GMSZ and symbol is manipulated showing that the desired letter is in that unit, and at the same time the particular letter is desi ated by manipulating key X2-bearing the letters NOPQR tS, but the X2 key wil punch two horizontal delineated 5 acesfrom the top. and the 9 key will tesigmute the unit. Manifestly therefore the letter 9 will be segregated. The remaining letters are indicated in the same manner. i. e. by manipulating the desired keys. There is no designating key for field ARCDEFG.
By this type of card I am enabled to utilize 35 letters and symbols which is considerably more than have heretofore been found practical. Furthermore, this large number of letters and symbols are indicated on my card by the mani ulation of but twelve keys. I have founc that ra id, accurate and eflicient compilation an classification of data can be obtained by my unique method.
In Figure 3 is shown a card delineated in the same manner as the card shown in Figure 1. but having heavy line delineations (7) between which are arranged slightly modified forms of my method of compilation. This card is particularly adapted for use in compiling the data required for city directories. The first section A' is made up in accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention as hereinbeforedescribed with reference to Figures 1 and 2; but section Ti shows but four fields in each unit (h rizontal) and eight fields in the vertical columns. However by the method exemplified by section B but 32 characters can be utilized; and in section C wherein three fields are comprised in each unit (horizontal) and nine in the vertical columns but 27 characters are practicable. Section D represents the method employed in my prior Patent #l,343,755 granted June 15th 1920,
