Description

Patented Mr.v 3, 1925.
l UNITED STATES MATHEW PACKI, OF DETROITMICHIGAN.
DrsLAY TOY.
Application led May 1Q, 1924. Serial 714,204;
To all 'w71 om it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, MATHEW OrAoKI, a citizen of United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Display Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tc improvements in toys of the stereopticon type which projects images of a number of objects upon ay screen.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device where images enclosed in a casingare made to appear movable by revolving them upon a vertical axis and being illuminated from the interior of the casing.
Another purpose of the device is to provide means whereby the images as projected are received upon a screen and give the appearance of motion pictures.
These and other analogous objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which :--y
Figure 1 is -a vertical sectional view of an embodiment of the invention, taken on the center line thereof.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the transparent light diffusing plate attached to the front of the casing. Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 10 designates a post or column having a base 11, which consists of a fiat bot tom provided with braces 12 secured to the post 10.
Passing transversely through the post 10, near its upper end, is a horizontal spindle 14 rotatable 'within a housing 15, clamped by a nut 16 to the'post, the spindle having a. crank 17 secured by the set screw 18 in the usual manner.
Secured above the spindle 14, and also passing through the post 10 is a hollow housing 19, clamped against a fixed shoulder by the nut 2O and having rotatably mounted on it a sleeve 21 fixed within a spur gear 2 2 which Vmeshes with another spur gear 23 rigidly attached to the spindle 14.
The shouldered inner portion of the hollow housing 19 has an integral. hub 25 from which extends an arm 26 bent'at a right angle outwardly, as at 27 and terminating in a hub 28 inf which is mounted a short vertical spindle 29 fixed at its upper end in a turn table 30 on which are mounted a plurality of figured images 31.
The sleeve 21 extends axially outward from a circular plate 32 forming the head of a cylindrical casing 33 extending outwardly from the post in a horizontal plane and is rotated due to the gear- 22,on the shouldered part of the hollow housing 19.
This housing is extended from the hub 25 to form an arcuate curve 34, its downturned end 35 carrying an electric lamp 36 to which current is conducted by the connection 37. passing through the hollow housing and provided at its outer end ywith a socket connecting plug 38.-
Riveted to the plate 32 is an annular {iange 39formed on a drum 40 having at its outer end a bevel gear 41 meshing with a mating gear 42fixed on the lower end ofthe spindler29.
Thus as the casing 33 is rotated and the gear 41 secured therein, the gear 42 is turned simultaneously and also the platform 30 as the casing revolves.
The minute opaque figures "mounted on the edge of the platform 30 obstruct the rays of light from the lamp 36, which pass through a framed lens 43, `secured by bolts 44 to the outer edge of the casing 33, throwing shadow reflections upon a screen 45 lwhich may be placed at any desired distance.
On the outer edge of the lens holder or frame/.t6 is a series of extensions 47, each of which house a piece of translucent material 48 of different colors, -as red, blue, yellow, etc., triangular in shape or otherwise, which add to the beautv of the finished article.
Thus it will be seen that a device has been disclosed which is fully capable of performing the lvarious objects for which it is. intended, its operation being accomplished' by merely turning the crank handle 17.
Haviu g thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A display device comprising a movable post, a cylindrical casing extending in a horizontal plane therefrom, a head integral with said casing revolubly mounted in said post, a translucent head in the other end of said casing, a hollow bracket extending from said post into said casing, manually operable geared means for revolving said casing, a figural object carrying,r platform rotatable on an axis at a right angle from the axis of l said casing, said platform being supported by said bracket, a bevel gear fixed axially n said casing, a platform driving gear mating therewith, a lamp adjacent the center of said turntable about which said figures turn, and connections leading to said lamp 10 through said hollow bracket.
ln witness hereof I have affixed my signature.
MATHEW oPAoKI.
