Description

Feb. 24, 1925- 1,527,663
c. E. BEERY MULTIPLIER Filed Jan. 22. 1923 Patented Feb. 24, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT A1,527,663 oFFIcE.'
CLINTON E. BEERY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MULTIPLIER.
Application led January 22, 1923.
To all 'whom t may concem Be it known that I, CLINTON E. BEERY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiplier-s, ot' which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains generally to arithmometers, and has more particular reference to a simple form of multiplier adapted for use by school children, to assist them in lerning and memorizing the multiplication ta le.
The primary purpose of the invention is to provi e a device of the character indicated, .which will be extremely simple in construction and in operation, but which will be of great assistance to the pupil in that it enables him to visualize simultaneously the multiplicand, the multiplier, and their product.
For the urpose of facilitating an understanding o? my Invention, I have illustrated on the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment thereof, from an inspection of which, when considered in connection with the following description, Iny invention, its Inode 0f operation, and many of its advantages should be readily understood and appreciated.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. l is a plan view of a multiplier embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referrin to the drawings more in detail, reference c Iaracter 5 indicates a board, plate, or the like, made of any suitable material, preferably sheet Inetal, and providing a flat surface adapted to receive a sheet of paper, cardboard, or the like, 6, upon which the products of the multiplication table are printed. These products are arranged in rows longitudinally and transversely of the board, as shown in Fig. 1, a horizontal row, indicated by reference character 7; being the products of the table of twos, row 8 the roducts of the table of threes, and so on. ikewise, the vertical row 9 comprises the products of the table of twos, row 11 the products ot' the table of threes, and so on. The top and bottom edges of the plate 5 are turned over to form the anges 12 and 13, respectively, beneath which the edges of the sheet 6 are disposed, and the sheet is further Serial No. 614,056.
held in place by the flange 14 on the righthand edge of the plate.
Upon the face of the plate there is mounted a guide Inember 15, which is supported some distance above the face of the board by the downwardly bent endsA 16, which are anchored beneath the flanges 12 and 13, as shown in Fig. 3. A Inovable head 17, slidabl)y disposed upon the member 15, is provided with an indicator opening 18, adapted to transverse a column of mnltiplicands 19, printed upon a strip 21 disposed in the channel formed bv the member 15. The head is also provided with a guide portion 22 in which a bar 23 is slidably disposed and adapted to'project across the face of the table. The extent of movement of this bar in both directions is limited by the upturned end 24 and the downturned end 25, respectively. The head 17 is also provided with another indicator in the form of a sight opening 2G disposed over the bar 23, through which the multipliers 27, printed on a strip 28 disposed in the upwardly opening channel of the bar 23, Inay be observed. The outer downturned end ol the bar is also provided with an indicator in the form of a sight opening 2f), through which that multiplication product over which the sight opening is disposed may be observed. A sheet of transparent material 3l, such as Celluloid, is preferably disposed over the face of the table, and strips ot' similar material are disposed over the multipliers and multiplicands carried by the guide member and slide bar.l respectively.
My multipliei` is adapted to be used in the following manner. The user slides the head 17 along the guide 15 until the Inultiplicand indicator 18 is disposed over the desired multiplicand. The bar 213 is then adjusted longitudinally until the desired multiplier carried thereby is visible through the sight opening @t the multiplier indicator 2G. Due to the construction and arrangement of the parts. the product indicator 29 will then be disposed over the product of the indicated multiplicand and multiplier, and can be readihv observed. For instance, assuming that 5 is to be multiplied by 12, the head 17 is adjusted to bring the sight opening 18 over the numeral 5 in the Inultiplicand column, the bai' is then adjusted to dispose the numeral 12 carried therebyY beneath the multiplier sight opening 26, whereupon, as will be apparent from Fig. 1, the product inwith a product bodiment of the invention has been shown and described for illustrative purposes, the structural details are nevertheless capable of wide variation within the purview of my invention, as deiined in the following claims.
