ARTICLE-RETAINING BAND.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAV IV. PETERSON,

a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Bradford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Article-Retaining Band, of which the following is a specification. 1

My invention relates to improvements in retaining means for pocket-books and like articles. V

An important object of the invention is to providea retaining device which may be placed about a pocket-book, note book or the like, and prevent displacement of the same from the ocket.

A furt er object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be positioned about a pocket-book, note book or the like and retain same in a compact manner in addition to preventing the removal of the article from the pocket.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of t'his character which is extremely simple, yet'durable'of construction and efficient for the purpose intended,

Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one form of my device secured about a pocketbook,

Figure 2 is a top plan view of my device showing a modified form of retaining means,

Figure 3 is a side elevation of the same, and

Figure t is a side elevation of a modified form of my invention.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 generally denotes a pocket-book or other article which may be carried in the pocket, and 6 denotes a band adapted to be positioned about the pocket-book sides and retain same in a compact manner, and therefore it is considered advisable to construct the band 6 of elastic material.

The important feature of my invention is an extension pad 7 which is preferably rectangular in shape and is built integral with or secured to the retaining band 6. The edges of the pad 7 are serrated to form projecting teeth 8 adapted to engage the sides of the pocket and prevent displacement of the article about which the device is placed.

In Figure 2 I have shown a modified form of the extension pad 9 which is formed in the shape of a flower the petals 10 thereof being adapted to form gripping elements and thereby prevent sliding of the band in the garment pocket. It is obvious that numerous artistic designs of flowers or the like may be employed in the construction of the pad thus greatly enhancing the appearance of the device.

In Figure 3 I have shown still another modified form, the pad 11 being raised above the band by an intermediate strip 12.

The edges of the pad may be under out as at 13 shown in Figure 4, materially adding to the retaining efliciency of the pad.

In use, the device may be constructed in various sizes and may be mounted upon pocket-books and note books containing valuable information and greatly diminish the liability of loss thereof, as it is well known that articles of this character are easily dislodged from the pocket upon the person carrying same. leaning or stooping over, running or assumlng numerous positions which might tend to cause the article to be dropped from the pocket. It is obvious that the device herein described will prevent displacement of the object upon which it is placed as the extension pad, of which any number may be placed upon the band, when engaging the sides of the pocket, prevent displacement of the article. It is considered desirable to construct the band and pad of rubber or likematerial thereby retaining the note book or purse in a compact manner and providing a surface which will naturally adhere to the sides of the pocket. It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes as to the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the sub joined claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A device of the character described, comprising an elastic retaining band, and an ment to prevent removal of the said pocketbook or other article. i

comprising an elastic retaining band adapted to be secured in position about a pocketbook or the like, and an extension pad formed in the shape of a flower or similar design the edges thereof being pointed to form engaging means in order to preventdisplacement of the pocket-book or article from the pocket, of a garment.
