- Be it known that I, EDWIN B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marion, county of Grant, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Crusher; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a crusher which is herein illustrated as of the single roll type.
The chief object of the invention is to construct a crusher which will have considerable flexibility and considerable capacity.
Another object of the invention is to construct and arrange the parts of the crusher in such a manner that the same may be readily removed forreplacement or repair purposes and only those parts removed and renewed which require renewal.
The chief feature of the invention consists in the construction of the crusher in units and providing the respective units with suitable actuating means for actuating said units as a whole, but which permits said units to operate with considerable flexibility.

In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a crusher of the-roll type embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevationalview thereof, parts being shown dotted. Fig. 3 is. a transverse sectional view of a crusher unit roll and is taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 4 is a. plan View of one-ofv the breaker plate units.
In the present invention the crusher is illustrated as of the roll type, and herein the same is shown composed of a plurality of crusher roll forming units. These roll forming units are herein shown suitably supported upon a common shaft, and so supported in the present instance that they operate simultaneously and have no relative. movement with respect to each other. Associated with the unified roll is a unified breaker plate construction including a'plurality of unit breaker plates, each mounted upon a common support and individually actuated to return to a predetermined normal position-when subjected to unusual stress. The
advantage obtained by 'thus forming the breaker plate in units is that if the crusher operates upon coal of rather uniform size and attempts to operate at one portion upon a relatively larger size, that operating portion adjacent the larger size piece of coal will yield and permit the crusher to reduce the size of the larger sized coal. At the same time, however, the remainder of the crusher does not vary, therefore, and the normal crushing action is carried on simultaneously with this abnormal crushingaetion, reference being had to the reduction of an unusually large size piece of material to smaller sizes corresponding to the initial size of the normal run of the material. This feature of the invention-permits the crusher tooperate upon material which runs from expeditiously reduce the same to the desired I final size, which, it will be apparent, gives the resultant crusher a capacity greater than the usualcrushers, for the reason that all parts-of the crusher are operating at all times and-insures that the product dis charged from the crusher is ofsubstantially uniform size.
In the drawings 10 indicates, a basc'having the sides 11 upstanding'therefrom and provided with a pair of. bearings 12 and 13 therein. Caps 1 1 and 15 rotatably support shaft-s 16 and 17in said bearings. Herein theshaft 17 supports a power pulley 18 at an extended end, while upon its opposite extended end itcarries a suitable gear wheel 19 adapted to mesh with a similar Wheel 20 upon the extended end of the shaft 16. The sides 11 also are provided with another bearing 21 in the upper portion, and the caps 22 secure a shaft or pivot 23 therein, which herein is shown as a stationary pivot, since set screw 24 is provided.
