The bed 10, in the illustrative form, is supportedon the form cylinder 13 which is constructed so that a drilling tool may be passed through holes 14- in the bed supportingsurface of the cylinder, the. holes 14 being in alinement with the holes 12.

In making up a form comprising a plurality of separate plates, great ditlieulty is found in loc-ating the plates in the appropriate relation on the printing bed. To overcome this diiculty, I have provided the devices, such as are illustrated in Fig. 1, by which the key sheet may be attached to what is the equivalent of an impression surface, and a loca-tin@ device may then be moved over the key stheet and the printing bed, so that a position on the bed corresponding to a selected position on the key sheet may be accurately indicated, so that the corresponding printing plate may be attached to the bed in appropriate position.
In the illustrative form, 'iIf have provided a printing couple comprising` a form cylinder 13 and an impression cylinder? 17 mounted [in the usual manner to rotate in bearings 18 and 19, the latter bearingbeing made eccentric and provided Witlr means by which the printing couple may bel thrown into and out of impression, all in the usual manner.
' The printing couple may be rotated by a motor 2O driving `a pulley 21 on a shaft 22 having a gear 23 engaging with a gear on the form cylinder 13. A. feed board 24 may be provided, together with sheet gages 25. There may also be provided the usual deliveryv rings oril cylinder 26 and the fly 27. Suitable inking rollers 27 are also provided. and further description thereof ivill be unnecessary.
The form-bed 10 isa cylindrical shell detaehably connected to the surface 14 of the cylinder 13 by the bolts 28 and, in the torni illustrated, Vthis bed extends more than 180 degrees aroundthe cylinderv 13. Since such bed preferably is to be removed from the cylinder 13, it is necessary to construct the cylinder 13 so that this may be accomplished. To this end, I make the gap betiveen the ends of the segment 14 of such a size that there will be a diameter across the so as not to interfere with the removal or replacement of the bed l10. In the construction illustrated, it will be seen that by removing thel bolts 28 and turningthe bed 10 on the cylinder 13 until the ends of the bed 10 are opposite the shortest diameter across the cylinder, the bed 10 may then be removed rom the cylinder, although its surface extends more than halt way around such cylinder.
Similarly, the impression surface on the cylinder 17 is preferably formed of a. re movable cylindrical shell 30, removably attached thereto by bolts 31 and preferably provided With. a clamp bar 32 at the front and a reel rod 33 at therear, the clamp bar and the reel rod being connected to the surface member independently of the cylinder. The cylinder 17 has the usual sheet grippers 34 which Will be operated in the usual manner to take a sheet from the guides 25 and carry it past the impression point to the delivery rings 26.
On the rod 35 extending across the Inacliine is slidably mounted the locating devices Which, in the form illustrated, com prise a double armed member 37 on opposite ends of which are pivotally mounted arms38, 39, each carrying at their outer ends transparent plates 40 and 41, res )ectively, having. cross lines 42 thereon. he relative positions of the two arms of the member 37 may be adjusted by the stud 7 3 and the nut 74, which serve to clamp the two arms 70, 7l in adjusted position. Adjusting screws 43 are provided to regulate the height of the plates 40 and 41. The cross lines on the plates 40 and 41 are situated so that the angular distance from the impression point to such cross lilies is the same for each, but on opposite sides of tht` vertical plane passing through' the line of impression. Consequently, a point under one set ot cross lines will reach the impression line at precisely the same time when the corresponding point` under the other cross line reaches the impression line` as the printing couple is rotated.
A make-ready sheet 'is fastened on its llat end underthe clamp bar 32 and is stretched around the surface 30 by the reel rod 53. The key sheet is then attached to the cylinder 17 preferably by feeding out to the gages 25 so that it will hetaken by the grip-- pers 34. the key sheet being smoothed on the surface by the brush 50, if desired, by one or more rotatioiisoiE the printing couple While the cylinders are out ot engagement. rl`he couple is then stopped with the irst portion of the key sheet beneath the plate 41. The printing plate correspoinling to this point is then placed on the bed l() beneath the plate 40! and is moved until the corresponding point on the printing plate is beneath the cross lines on the plate 40. This will locate the printing plate iu correct position in relation to the key sheet. Y
In order to give a slow, fine motion to the adjustment of the printing plate, I provide pushing fingers 51 controlled by adplsting llt) sreu's -52 and handles, lthese pushingli-ngers engaging the edges of the plateso that it may bel moved slowly andavithprecision untilthe desired point is located beneath the Cross lines 32. Thelingers 5.1 maybe adjustably mounted `in the holders yft on the ends of the screws 52 so as to accommodate didier-ent sizes of printing.` plates.

While` I have-described my invention as applied to a cylindrical printing couple, it will be understood that it may also be ap-` plied to a fiat bed construction. It Will furthern'iore be understood that. While preferably the several` features of my invention are used together, many of .them are capable. of use .alone erin combination` with only somebf the ren'iaining features. For instance, my form-bed and themethod of at-. taching the'platesthereto may be used in connection With any hind of printing press either flat. bed or cylinder and Without the use of my locating devices.v It will also be understood that my removable surface carrying the makeueady sheet connected there to may bensed independently ofV my illustrative form of form-bed.-
It will also be understood that the arrangement which I have described is merely illustrative, and that .the embodiments thereof may be varied Within wide limits.
I claim :e
l. The method of locating the individual plates of a printing form in desired yrelation on a printing bed, which consists in sliding each plate over the bed to ydesired position, clamping the plate temporarily in position and then, fastening the plate nonadjustably to the bed.
2. The method oflocating the individual plates of a printing forni in thel same relation on a printing bed as the correspondingI impressions occupy on a. key sheet, which consists in moving each plate to the saine relative position as the impression of said plate. occupies onthe key sheet and then` fastening' the bed.
8. The method of locating the iinlividnal plates of a printing' form in the same relation on a printing bed as the corresponding impressions occupy on a key sheet, which consists in moving each plate to the same relative position as the impression of said plate occupies on the key sheet, clam ping the plate temporarily in position, andthen fas.- tening the plate non-adjustably to the bed.
4.-. The method of locating the individual plates of a printingl form in desired relation on a printing bed, Which consists in moving each plate individually to desired position, drilling a hole in the soft metal backing of the plate through a hole in the bed, passing the body of a headed screw through the hole in the bed and screwing its threaded end into the soft. metal backing' to fasten the plate in position on the bed.
5. The method of locating the individual plates of a printingform in desired relation on a. printing bed, which consists in moving each plate to desired position, clamping the plate.noiradjustably to the plate temporarily in position and then drilling a hole in the soft metal backing of the plate through a hole in the bed, passing the body of a headed screw through the hole in i the bed and screwing its threaded end into the soft metal backing to fasten the plate in position on the bed.
6. A printing form comprising a printing bed, a plurality of printing plates mounted thereon, and fastening members for the plates comprising headed screws extending through the bed and screwed into small holes formed in the soft metal'backing of the plate, the plate supporting surface of the bed having recesses surrounding the screws and adapted to receive the soft metal of the plate forced therefrom when the screws are forced into the small holes in the plate.V
7 A device for locating the plates of a printing form on a bed, comprising means for sliding the plate over the bed to desired position, means to clamp the plate to the bed temporarily after it is in'position, and
means to fasten the plate non-adjustably to the bed.
8. A device for locating the plates of a printing form on a bed, comprising means for sliding the plate over the bed to desired position, means to clamp the plate to the bed temporarily after it is in position, and headed screws extending through the bed and screwed into the body of the plate to fasten the plate to the bed.
9. A printingelement, comprising a cylinder having a cylindrical bed supporting segment extending more than 180 degrees around the cylinder with a Vgap between the ends of the segment, and a cylindrical segmental form-bed detachably connected to the cylinder and having a form supporting surface of more than 180 degrees in circumference.
10. A printing element, comprising a cylinder having a cylindrical bed supporting segment extending more than 180 degrees around the cylinder, and a depressed segment connecting the ends of said segment, and a cylindrical segmental form-bed detachably connected to the cylinder and having a form supporting surface of more than 180 degrees in circumference, the shortest dist-ance between the ends of said form-bed being greater than the greatest distance across said bed supporting segment and said depressed segment.
11. A printing bed and a key sheet support adapted to be positioned in fixed relation to each other, means to attach the key sheet to its support, and means whereby a printing plate may be located on the bed in a position in 'relation to the other plates of the form corresponding to the position which the impression of Vthat plate bears to the impressions of the other plates on the key sheet.
12. A printing bed and a key sheet support adapted to be positioned in fixed relation to each other, means to attach the key sheet to its support, and means whereby a printing plate may be located on the bed in a position in relation to the other plates of the form corresponding to the position which the impression of that plate bears to the impressions of the other plates on the key sheet, said Vmeans comprising a member having a pair of locating devices in fixed relation to each other, said members being mounted so that one indicating device may be brought into position over any selected point on the key sheet, whereby the other indicating device will indicate the position on the bed of the point on the plate corresponding to the selected point on the key sheet.
13. A printing bed and a key sheet support adapted to be positioned in fixed relation to each other, means to attach the key sheet to its support, and means whereby a printing plate may be located on the bed in a position in relation to the other plates of the form corresponding to the position which the impression of that plate bears to the impressions of the other plates on the key sheet, said means comprising a member having a pair of locating devices in fixed relation to each other, said member being mounted so that one indicating device may be brought into position over any selected point on the key sheet with the other device over the bed, and means to mox'e a plate over the bed to bring beneath the other device a point on the plate corresponding to the selected point on the key sheet.
14. A printing bed and a key sheet support adapted to be positioned in fixed relation to each other, means to attach the key sheet to its support, means whereby a printing plate may be located on the bed in a position in relation to the other plates of the form corresponding to the position which the impression of that plate bears to the impressions of the other plates on the key sheet, said means comprising a member having a pair of locating devices in fixed relation to each other, said member being mounted so that one indicating device may be brought into position over any selected point on the key sheet with the other device over the bed, and means to engage the edges of a plate and move it over the bed to bring beneath the other device a point on the plate corresponding to the selected point on the key sheet.
15. A pair of cylinders having parallel axes and geared to rotate in unison, one of said cylinders being adapted to support a key sheet attached thereto, and the other fieaov i cylinder having a printing plate bed, a member mounted for movement longitudinally of the axes of thecylinders and having a pair Iof locating devices in fixed relation to each other, with each device extending over and adjacent to the periphery of one of the cylinders.
16. A printing couple comprising a pair of cylinders ofthe same printing diameter, one of said cylinders being adapted to support a key sheet attached thereto, andthe other cylinder having a printing plate bed adapted to support the form, a member mounted for movement longitudinally of the axes of the cylinders and having aV pair of locating devices in fixed relatioiito each other with each device extending over and adjacent to the periphery of one of the cylinders, Witlithe points under the indicating devices having the same angular relation With the line of contact of the cylinders.
17. A pair of cylinders having parallel axes and geared to rotate in unison, one of said cylinders being adapted tosupport a key sheet attached thereto, and the other cylinder having a printing plate bed, a member mounted for movement longitudinally of the axes of the cylinders and having a pair of locating vdevices in fixed relation to each other, with each device extending over and adjacent to the periphH ery of one of the cylinders, and means over the cylinder having the bed to move a. printing plate on the bed into position beneath the locating device over that cylinder.
18. A pair of cylinders having parallel axes and geared to rotate in unison, one of said cylinders being adapted to support a key sheet attached thereto, and the other cylinder having a printing plate bed, a member mounted for movement longitudinally of the axes of the cylinders and hav-` ing a. pair of locating devices in fixed relation to each other, with each device extending over and adjacent to the periphery of one of the cylinders, and means over the cylinder having the bed to move a printing plate on the bed into posit-ion beneath the locating device over that cylinder, said bed and its cylinder being arranged to permit plate fastening devices to be passed through the bed fro-in the underside thereof into the body of the plate.
19. A pair of cylinders having parallel axes and geared to rotate in unison, one of said cylinders being adapted to support a key sheet attached thereto, and the other cylinder having a printing plate bed, a member mounted for-inoveiiieiit longitudinally of the axes of the cylinders and having a pair of locating devices in fixed relation to each other, With each device extending over and adjacent to the periphery of one of the cylinders, means over the cylinder having the bed to move a bed removably printing plate on the bed intoposition beneath the locating device over that cylinder, andimeans to clamp the plate temporarily to the bed when positioned,said bed and its cylinder having openings ai'rangedto permit plate fastening devices to be passed through 'the bed from the underside thereof into the 'body of the plate.
20. A cylinder having printing plate attached to the periphery thereof, saidbed having a smooth outer sui'- face and a plurality of smooth-Walled openings extending through the member, and the cylinder having a plurality of openings through its 'Wallsin alineinent with the openings in thelbed, whereby plate fastening devices may be passed 'through the cylinder and the bed into the body of the printing plates.
21. A cylinder having a printing plate bed removably attached to the `periphery thereof, said bed having a smooth outer surface and a ribbed bottom surface 'and a plurality of smooth-walled openings extending through themember between the ribs, and thecylinder having a plurality of openings through its Walls in alineiiient with the openings in the bed, whereby plate fastening devices may be passed through the cylinder and the bed into the body of the printing plates.
22. ln a printing press, a printing couple comprising a pair of cylinders each having a cylindrical bed removably attached thereto, means to attach a make-ready sheet to the impression bed, means to attach a key sheet temporarily to the impression bed, means whereby each of a plurality of printing plates may be located on the forin-bed in a position on that bed corresponding to the position of the impression of that plate on the key sheet, and means to attach the plates to the form-bed after they have been positioned.
23. In a printing press, a printing couple comprising a pair of cylinders each having a cylindrical bed removably attached thereto, means to attach a make-ready sheet to the impression bed, means to attach a key sheet temporarily to the impression bed, means whereby each of a plurality of printing plates may be located on the form-bed in a position on that bed corresponding to the position of the impression of that plate on the key sheet, and means to attach the plates to the form-bed after they have been positioned by fastening members extending through the bed from the underside thereof into the body of the plate.
24. In a printing press, a printing couple comprising a pair of cylinders each having a cylindrical bed removably attached thereto, means to attach a make-ready sheet to the impression bed, means to attach a key sheet temporarily to the impression bed,
means whereby each of a plurality of printing plates may be located on the form-bed in a posi-tion on that bed corresponding to the position of the impression ot' lthat plate on the key sheet, said means comprising a member movable longitudinally of the axes of the cylinders and having a pair of loeating devices in iixed relation to each other and each extending over one of the beds, and means to attach the plates to the formbed after they have been positioned.
25. In a printing press, a printing couple comprising a pair of cylinders each having a cylindrical bed removablyL attached thereto, means to attach a make-ready sheet to the impression bed, means to attach a key sheet temporarily to the impression bed, means whereby each of a plurality of printing plates may be located on the form-bed in a position on that bed corresponding to the position of the impression of that plate on the key sheet, said means comprising a member movable longitudinally of the axes of the cylinders and having a pair of locating devices in fixed relation to each other and each extending over one ofthe beds,
and means to fasten the plates to the formbed after they have been positioned by fastening members extending through the bed from the underside thereof into the body of the plate.
26. In a printing press, a printing couple comprising a pair of cylinders each having a cylindrical bed removably attached thereto, means to attach a make-ready sheet to the impression bed, means to attach a key sheet. temporarily to the impression bed, means whereby each of a plurality of printing plates may be located on the form-bed in a position on that bed corresponding to the positionl of the impression of that plate on the key sheet, and means to attach the plates to the form-bed after they have been positioned, said beds each extending more than 1S() degrees around the cylinder which supports it and said cylinders, and said beds being constructed and arranged to permit the removal of the beds from the cylinders in a direction at right-angles to the axes of the cylinders.
